We just found out my husband may be transferred overseas to Nigeria within a few months. is there anyone out there who has worked/lived in Nigeria with small children? As exciting as it sounds, I'm concerned about our safety and well-being, as I know nothing about the state of Nigeria's government, politics or relationship with the U.S. and its making me panic. I would love anyone's insight and advice on moving overseas, especially if it was Nigeria. We might be there for 4-5 years.

---------------update--------------

I have no idea what the accommodations are but I think we'll be on a compound? I like the idea to get in contact with another woman/mother over there. I don't know any missionaries from there but I will definitely check out the travel warning website. I thought it was exciting at first until someone at the company started talking about how security will be provided for us on occasion (to and from the airport). Its all up in the air so I have no idea how to prepare for this. I'd rather hear the truth from people who have lived overseas than be encouraged that everyone will be alright. I can't believe how dangerous the situation can be - I don't want to bring the kids over there and I certainly don't want my husband there! I'm so worried. I feel like throwing up. I'm sorry to be a big baby about this. I only know how to live in America. I know so many people - too many people, are losing their jobs and I truly am grateful that my husband still has his job and I hate to complain in lieu of all the lay offs. I just wish our options weren't so dangerous for our family, that's all.

What can I do next?

I lived overseas in Indonesia for 4 years when our son was 7 and our daughter was born in Singapore. I haven't lived in Nigeria, but I know people who did and it was not the best location to take young children to. Will you be living in Lagos or will you be in a camp far removed from the city? That will make a huge difference in your safety and what your children will be exposed to. I have a doctor that is from Nigeria and also a nurse (with another doctor) and they both have made comments about how harrowing it was to live in Lagos. I think that you should make sure that you find out alot more about the living situations over there as well as the schooling before your husband takes you and your children over there. Also, ask him to get someone's email address (preferrably another woman who is also a Mom) that is currently living over there with the same company so that you can talk to someone who is there and that will help you make a better decision. Living overseas is exciting, and scarey all at the same time, but it's great to broaden you horizons as well as your childrens!
Hope that this helps.
K.

Didn't live in Nigeria but lived in Brazil. It was a great experience. I would also be concerned about safety. What has the company told you regarding housing and such? Good luck!

This is a US government site for travel warnings to different countries. It is updated frequently and has lots of good information regarding the questions you asked. I recommend checking this out for anyone travelling abroad. Even if it is a typically safe country, this will alert you to any specific scams/areas to avoid. Good luck to you and your family.

I'm curious as to what company your husband is working for. My husband works for Tidewater, and he works in Angola. He refuses to work in Nigeria, because of all of the corruption. If your husband works for Tidewater, I would expect that he can come home every 90 days, rather than have you and your children over there with him. It is not a safe place, even for you to be at (as per my husband's opinion). I don't even want to be in Angola with my husband (as much as I love him). He comes home about every 90 days, and we email each other at least twice every day. He will use Skype to call, for video chats, when he has WiFi access, but calls every Sunday regardless. I think that would be a better option than moving there with him. I hope your husband's company has accomodations similar to Tidewater's if Tidewater is not his employer. I don't want to scare you too much, but you did ask for the truth. I can tell you more if you want to email me.

I have no experience with Nigeria (except the scams people over there do on the internet, LOL) But I am in a similar situation, my husband just got a contract to go work in Kuwait for 6 months, me and the kids are staying here though. Its going to be tough. :)
