Motrin Dosage and Teething

My DS has his first tooth! Other than waking in the night and crying for a few minutes before going back to sleep a few times the last couple of nights he doesn't seem to be having too much trouble. Last night I gave him some Tylenol before bed and he slept all night and woke up happy like he used to, so I'm guessing he was waking up in pain. He's never been sick and aside from Tylenol after shots he's never needed any other medicine really. I have Motrin and Tylenol, and was going to try the Motrin tonight but the instructions give dosages based on age and weight and my little one is actually in the weight range for a 12-23 month old. So do I dose him based on age (7 months) or weight (20 lbs)? Any other teething suggestions? He's thoroughly enjoying gnawing on a cold teether right now, but other than that I'm not too sure what I can do for him.

What can I do next?

Please see the medication dosage for ibuprofen: http://www.askdrsears.com/topics/childhood-illnesses/medi.... You should dose him based on weight.
Also, please skip the Hyland teething tablets as they contain an unknown amount of belladona, a very potent opiate which acts as a sedative and is addictive with frequent use. I encourage you to research them if you are tempted to try them.
A cool wet wash cloth is a great addition to the cold teether. Best wishes for peaceful nights. Nurse Midwife Mom

Weight always trumps age, personally I don't even know why they list age ranges.

weight but can't hurt to verify the dosage with the doctor. My DD only needed pain relief to get sleep otherwise she was fine. Although I second the sophied the giraffe recommendation. She loved that thing!

Always go by the weight

Other teething remedies:

* Wet baby washcloth that you pop into the freezer for 30 min
* If you have one of those mesh food bags that they make for babies, I'd put a popsicle or a peeled apple in it (only do this if you have the mesh bag)
* Sophie the Giraffe - my 7 month old's favorite teether
* Amber teething necklace - I don't know if they work, but some people swear by them
* Hyland's Teething Tablets (available at Target, Walmart & Walgreens)
My son LOVES to chew on the cuff of his shirt, which he'll pull down over his thumb

Ask, your Pediatrician.

But if he doesn't need it, then he doesn't need it.
Not all kids need it, when teething.
My daughter didn't, my son did.

My kids liked to knaw on a frozen washcloth when teething, when they were babies.
