My 5 year daughter almost 6 just recently experienced a severe reaction to nuts. This was so weird because she has eaten them before. I know little information on this and can not get her in to see an allergy Dr. until the end of July. Does anyone out there have any helpful information?

What can I do next?

My son has a severe reaction to all tree nuts, examples almonds, cashews, pecans... but not peanuts because they are actually legumes(grown in the ground). I have to be very careful and read every package of anything he eats, make his lunches for school, and always have a nut free snack available just in case. You should probably try to make an appointment with your Ped to get an Epipen just in case. Teach her to ask in if things have nuts in them, and make sure anyone caring for her knows to read the package everytime. It does get easier, my son has been allergic for over 3 years. Let me know if you have any specific questions. R.

Hi A.,
My Haley is allergic to peanuts.
It can cause the throat to close
and stop the wind pipes.
So for now do not share any foods
with peanuts or peanut oil.
Until the allergist has found out facts.

Oh and me too -- Two girls and a boy.

I don't know how helpful the information I have is, its maybe more of some advice. I myself, deal with nut allergies. I grew up eating walnuts and pecans, my mom baked alot and put them in everything. Up until a couple years ago, I never had any allergies. I somehow became allergic to these items (i can eat any other kind of nut just fine) anyways my allergy has become so bad that the last time I accidently ate a sliver of walnut my throat closed up and I couldnt breathe. I would recommend the following: Talk to your family doctor and ask him/her if they can prescribe you an Epi Pen so that you can carry with you in case of an emergency occurs before you can see the allergy doctor. I carry mine with me everywhere, I have shown my family members how to use it incase i need it. This will help to keep the airways open until you can get ur daughter to the hospital. Also be extremly careful with what she eats. Inspect food, and if you eat out make sure you ask the ingredients in an item. I know mine has become so bad that even if i eat, lets say a blueberry muffin that was sitting next to a banana nut muffin, i will have a reaction. Good luck with everything :)

I have a friend whos son can eat peanuts, but he can't eat pecans. So where the nut is grown ( on the ground or in a tree) might be something to check. She may not be allergic to all nuts.

A.,

I am the head of two children's special diet needs groups in the Tucson area, and I would like to offer my help to you. One group is Celiac Disease specific, and the other is for all food allergies, special diet needs.

I have contact with a number of others mothers in the same shoes as you and your daughter! They are willing to have contact from "newbies" and help them get started. Please email me so I can find out specific needs information for you.

I am so glad to read that your precious daughter will see an allergy specialist at the end of July.

I probably am repeating others, but there are several great web sites to get started with.

The first off the top of my head is: http://www.foodallergy.org/

Peanut allergy specific is http://www.peanutallergy.com/ and if you go to it, be sure to sign up for the Allergy Alert. Sometimes, food companies, by accident, get nuts mixed into a food that does not belong in it. When this is discovered, the Peanut Allergy people send out email alerts on the product. It covers both Canada and the States.

When eating out, be sure you check with any restaurant what is in your daughter's food. Ask for a manager if you need to. Even check with details you never thought of before--like, do you fry your french fries (chicken nuggets, etc.) in peanut oil? Most restaurants don't anymore, but one can never be too safe.

Email me soon.

other than the fact you have to check everything she eats to make sure it does not contain nuts

you have to realise that she had to have nuts to develop a reaction to it. she just took longer to decelop that reaction

my now grown daughter used to at age 7 cry every night that her stomach hurt and I somehow knew because it was her that she was serious about it hurting not faking it so I asked the doctor---an allergy was not a factor I thought of because she drank lots of milk in prior years. the dr explained to me that allergies have to develop even if it a short time or a long time. you are not allergic the very first time you take something but it can be the second time or years down the road --- the is why adults develop allergies later in life. I think who else told you to tell other cargivers about checking labels is good advice and if they seem reluctant to read labels go elsewhere.

Anyone can develop a mild or severe allergy to a food at any time. I am sure this was a very scarey time since you were not prepared for it at all. Even though you can't get in to see an allergist at this time you don't have to worry. You will need to be diligent about what your child eats. Things like cakes, cookies, and ice cream are all often contaminated with nuts without you knowing it. Read lables and stay away from things with a lot of ingerdiants in them. It is harder to keep track of what is in things that have too many ingrediants listed. There are a few really great companies for people with nuts allergies. One is http://www.cherrybrookkitchen.com and another is www.EnjoyLifeFoods.com. I hope you can figure out how to gt through this transition time. It's easier than you think. Hang in there.

Nut allergies can show up at any time, especially if they are a frequent item in the diet. Don't give any nuts or nut products at all. S.

My stepson has an allergy to nuts as well, but not peanuts, I guess it is how they are grown. But make sure you have an epipen on hand at all times in case she eats something with nuts in it. Also make sure you read labels, do not give her anything with nuts, or products that are processed on equipment that process nuts. Also make sure when she asked people if there are nuts in them that she explains that she has a nut allergy. My son just asks if there are nuts in them, I explained to him that just asking makes it sound like he doesn't like nuts.

Good luck with everything. It can be very overwhelming at 1st, but it gets easier.

allergic reactions are the body's way of purging what it doesn't recognize as good for it - it would be my suggestion that you give her some environmental toxin protection and super antioxidants - I know of an all-natural SAFE herbal formula called Envirozon that supports and cleanses the organs of detoxification (spleen, liver, kidneys, etc.) so that they can do their job plus a couple of the most excellent sources of antioxidants in the world - Pure Camu and Sangre de Drago - if you are interested in more info on these products you can contact me or go to my website: shootingstarherbs.amazonherb.net

Hi A.,

I actually have a peanut and tree nut allergy myself. I developed it as a child even after I had eaten them before. My best advice to you is to keep her away from all nuts at least until you see the allergist and they can do some testing to see what else she might be allergic to. Unfortunately I never grew out of mine and I have to carry an Epi-Pen with me all the time just in case something happens. You'll also want to check with the allergist if her allergy might be airborn as well so you'll know if she is just restricted from eating them or if she shouldn't be around them at all. Don't hesitate to ask me any other questions you might have!

Hope this helps!
