Molluscum Contagiosum - Portland,OR

They will go away if left alone, but it takes a long time. My daughter had it and we went to the dermatologist, he "froze" one much like a wart and said that it stimulates the immune system to fight the infection. It worked like a charm and there was no pain at all. Cleared up very fast. My younger daughter had only one on her face, because it didn't spread we didn't take her to the derm. It went away on its own in about 18 months.

Thank you for posting this! My son has it on his neck, and we've taken him to see 2 pedis about it. Both have said that it's best to just leave it alone and it will eventually go away on its own as the body produces antibodies against it. They advised us to cover it with surgical tape or a small band-aid if he picks at it, and this should keep it from spreading. Both the pedis said that any attempt at removal will most likely cause permanent scarring, although I might try the tea tree oil.

My dagughter had this for a long, long time. Dont pick it or squeeze it - it will spread if you do. She had them all over her belly and sides. Our old Pedi said to just leave them alone and they will go away, but we didnt listen to his advice and it made them worse, they spread and stayed around longer. When we took her to a new Pedi (our old one moved to a new practice) he tried blister beetle and sure it got rid of the ones that were already there - but before they disappeared, they were painful for her and caused her to pick at them. She has a few little scars where she picked at them now. If I had to do it all over again, I would have just left the few she had in the begining alone.

I've never heard of this before so I looked it up and after doing a little research I found that it will pretty much go away on its own if the person has a normal immune system.
Scratching, poking or doing anything to it may only worsen and spread it, so it sounds like what everyone has been doing is the best thing :)

I have had a few children at my childcare center with it. I have never seen just one though, usually it comes in clusters and looks like warts. If is molluscum contagiosm then I think there is a cream to put on it to help. In most cases I think it just has to go away on its own.

My son had it in the crease of his arm for a long time. (almost a year) We went to the dermo who put some sort of mild acid on it to irritate it and "let the body acknowledge it was there and start fighting it". It caused him extreme discomfort and the bumps spread. After several of these trips to the doc, we decided to leave it alone and see what happened. After a few weeks, they started to disappear and after 3 months were totally gone. It is VERY easily spread so i would not recommend the poke and pick method. This method also causes a lot of discomfort and makes people notice it more than they would if it were just left alone.

It is true that time will heal it - but it can and will continue to spread and is highly contagious/communicable. We were prescribed a cream that was originally intended for genital warts... the dermatologist had us pick each spot with a toothpick dipped in the cream - to irritate it and get the medicine inside. Part of the irritation is to stimulate the body's immune response to kick in. It was barbaric treatment to poke my then 2 year old with at toothpick daily - but it did clear up sooner than the expected 6-12 months and no one else got it!!!

The highest grade tea tree oil is what you need. It is an anti-viral (and an anti-septic) which is what these lesions are. I use a brand of tea tree oil which is a high-grade oil. There is a T36-C5 and a T40-C3 grade. (The higher the T and the lower the C is best) The T36-C5 is around $2- $10.00 and the higher grade is around $16.00 or $17.00. Both are higher grades than any others out there.

Please be careful not to break the sore as it will spread but the good news is this is not systemic so it won't hang around after it's gone like a herpes virus, (i.e. chicken pox, fever blisters, shingles, etc.)

The next point is that these types of viruses DO NOT thrive in a healthy immune system. Your granddaughter needs additional nutrition in an improved diet and a chewable multivitamin. Please don't use a Flintstone or Walmart drug store quality. She needs a highly absorbable pharmaceutical grade to combat this...If her digestive system isn't good, a pharmaceutical grade won't absorb well either. I can recommend a good one if you’re interested.

I also recommend a detox of the home to build her immune system. Detoxing and the tea tree oil would cost far less than a dermatologist prescription even if you have insurance. I was told by one mom that it was $220.00 and they HAD insurance.

I had a foster child recently who had this and her doctor recommended a natural product called ZymaDerm. I bought it online at vitacost.com. I got one bottle that was similar to compound w that you put on every day and then I got a bottle of body wash. They are very small bottles but they worked very well. I could tell a difference within a couple of weeks. Unfortunately her mother didn't use it when she had the girls so they never completely went away while she was with me but I believe if used regularly it would have cleared up within a few months. A fiend of mine's infant daughter had it quite bad, and they used The Silver Cure on it. It was rather expensive, but it worked. I hope your grand daughter is all better now and doesn't need it.

Hi M.! I'm not so sure if it's molluscum contagiosum or not because the colour wasn't explained! You said "white and milky" but from what I've seen, from pictures, they seen too look more "skin coloured"...more like a skin tag than some type of lesion that contains sebum and therefore would be more white!
I just answered, in the "recently asked questions" a question where the title is "odd facial bumps"...maybe you could read through that and find answers...it may help if it sounds like the same type of lesion (which is more white than skin colour)!
Now, if it is molluscum contagiosum, you can use tea trea oil. It acts as an anti-fungal but that's why it also works for dandruff! But molluscum contagiosum is a virus, not a fungus so it should be treated more like you would a cold sore!
However, to treat a virus, you need more oxygen...I happen to know (or I'm almost sure) that the best way to treat something of this sort that's a viral lesion should be flooded with oxygen! This is where Benzol Peroxide comes in...water is H2O (one oxygen molecule) but Benzol Peroxide has double the oxygen (H2O2) and much more effective! I think that taking a 3% Benzol Peroxide solution (standard) and either applying potently for a few seconds with a Q-tip or more lightly with a cotton pad that it will be most effective (if you're nervous about it, you can start with diluting it 1 part Benzol peroxide and one part water)...this is under the assumption that is, in fact, molluscum contagiosum!
Again, if you want to check out the "odd facial bumps" on the right, it may be something like that...in this case it's called milia.
For some reason, I feel it's unlikely to be molluscum contagiosum based on the milky description you gave...I think it were MC, it would give more of a watery, somewhat colourless discharge if it were to errupt, not really milky!
I also think it might not be MC because it normally affects stomachs, arms and legs! Not to mention that even if the lesions don't errupt or leak, they are still highly conatgious and are normally found in bunches! In your granddaughter case, there's only one...and it's on her cheek!
It sounds like either milia or a regular pimple! In which case, washing with mild soap and water would be good but, even if it is just a pimple, you can use benzol peroxide! Again, the oxygen effect!
Bacteria is anaerobic, which means that it thrives in envriornments that doesn't have oxygen! Benzol Peroxide delivers oxygen which kills the bacteria!
In the end Benzol Peroxide is cheap, effective and safe! As a matter of fact, many peope use it to whiten their teeth when they brush (they may not swallow it but a 3% solution is still safe to put in your mouth!)
I'm pretty sure it will be safe if you want to try it on your granddaughter's cheek!
