Hi, I'm pregnant and wanting to find something to clean my toilet bowl that doesn't have the harsh chemical fumes that my current cleaner has. Does anybody know of anything natural that actually kills e-coli and other bacteria and viruses? Thank you! S.

I use a cleaner called Tub & Tile in my bathroom. It works great! I also use a botanically based medical-grade disinfectant called Solugard in my kitchen and bathroom. I would highly recommend both of these products!

Dear S.-

You can find safe, effective cleaning products in your pantry. Try any of the following:

1. MY PERSONAL FAVE: Pour 1/2 cup of baking soda and 1/2 cup white distilled vinegar into toilet. As the 2 ingredients combine they will sizzle (nature's scrubbing bubbles at work). When it's finished, just brush and flush. Baking soda is a very non-abrasive cleanser; white distilled vinegar is an effective dissinfectant.

2. Combine 1/4 cup white distilled vinegar and 2 cups of water in a spray bottle. Spray along the inside of the rim of the toilet and other surfaces that need cleaning. Leave on for 15 minutes then scrub and/or wipe as appropriate to the surface. This mixture will keep indefinetly in the spray bottle.

3. Tea Tree Oil kills bacteria. Combine 2 teaspoons of tea tree oil and 2 cups of water in a spray bottle. Spray along the inside of the rim of the toilet and other surfaces that need cleaning. Leave on for 30 minutes then scrub and/or wipe as appropriate to the surface. This mixture will keep indefinetly in the spray bottle.

4. Pour one cup of Borax into the toilet and let it set overnight. Brush in the morning.

5. Squirt about 2 Tbl Peppermint Castille Soap (Dr. Bronner's from Whole Foods). Scrub and flush. If you have hard water, add 1/4 cup white distilled vinegar before flushing.

All of these recipes (and hundreds more) are from a wonderful book about non-toxic cleaning that I just adore: "Better Basics for the Home" by Annie Berthold Bond. She also has a wonderful website: www.care2.com.

If you are more into buying a product to use, check at Whole Foods. They offer a pretty good selection of non-toxic cleaning supplies.

Thank you for being concerned about lessening the amount of toxins you are exposing to yourself, your family and the environment.

Best regards, N.

I'm not sure if it kills bacteria, etc. although I think it probably would, but I use Seventh Generation. Method is also a good brand.

I clean my toilet with either vinegar or baking soda. The vinegar probably kills more bacteria.

Go to Central Market, Whole foods, or a health food store. Then you will have your selection of completely safe products. Don't trust clorox and all those that say they are safe.. because they ARENT. Target also has a brand called Method that is safe. Good luck!

Hi, S.! I have a 2 year old of my own, plus a 4 year old niece with CF, and we use all NON-TOXIC household products that we buy direct from the manufacturer. This company is so awesome, and they have the ONLY botanical disinfectant that is FDA approved for use in hospitals, nursing homes and daycares. I'd love to share the info with you... just drop me a note if you'd like to know more!
