Looking for Good Running/walking Tennis Shoes

I am looking for some good tennis shoes. I just bought some New Balance and spent $170 on them. Not the cheapest and not the most expensive shoe you could buy at the New Balance store. I was exercising and walking fast and after 1 hour my bottom of my foot right under my big toe area was so sore and raw. For spending this much money I didn't think I should be having this kind of problem. I would like to return them and find some that would be good. Anyone know of a shoe store and a type of shoe that would be good to try. What about good socks, do you think that could be the problem. I just wear the regular Walmart Hanes type sock. Any help would be great. Thanks so much.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the advice. I went to Gary Gribbles and they are a big help. I tried on several different pairs and they even had me run outside in them. They really took there time with me to make sure I found the right shoe. Thanks again!

First, the easy one...socks. Get a good microfiber/wicking sock. The regular socks hold moisture and cause friction, and that may be a lot of the rub on your toe. Start with new socks. There are some great ones at Dick's.

Another issue could be how you are putting on and tying your shoes. A shoe rep once instructed me to put on the shoe, bang my heel on the floor to get my heel positioned properly at the back of the shoe, then tie snugly. Your toe may be too far towards the front of the show. Also check that you are not gripping the shoe with your toes when you walk. This is common when you walk at a very fast pace. Keep your toes and feet relaxed.

You should also go back to NB store and tell them exactly what is happening. They may be able to offer other solutions.

Finally, I just "invested" in a pair of MBTs from Hathaway Shoes (74th & Wornall). I say invested because they were around $250, but I have to say I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THEM!!! They take a bit to get used to, but they are amazingly comfortable. I use them mainly for walking but have done some runnng in them. The website says it is OK to train in them but you would not want to wear them in a race event. (They are a bit heavy for a race.) There are other shops that carry MBTs...you might try them on for a test drive.

Good luck and keep up the fitness!

I use Road Runner Sports (catalog and website). They carry many brands and styles, and on their website they have a feature where you answer some questions and they'll recommend a variety of shoes. You can also read customer feedback about shoes. Even if you don't order from them, it's good for research. They also give you something like three months to try a shoe, and if you don't like it you can return it.

I'm partial to Saucony, but I know some people think their "heavy."

I agree with the previous sock advice, and whether you go to a store like Gary Gribbles or a website like Road Runner, they'll be a good source for socks. I also save my running socks and shoes only for running. I wear my old shoes for running errands, working in the garden, etc.

Have fun!

My Pumas are my best friends! I run all the time and these are the only shoes that DONT BLISTER!! WAHOOOO!!! The inner lining is almost silky; they don't rub and they allow air to come in on the sides. I'll have to find you a picture. I brag about them to everyone. They are $80.00 and come in many colors. They are called the Women's Voltaic. The picture is on puma.com, go to shop online, women's, footwear, and they are the first shoes to pop up!

Good luck!

I have found that the walking Nike Air shoes work best. My heels hurt in other tennis shoes or have gotten shin splints. The nike airs usually cost around 55-60.00 and sometimes I get them on sale for around 40.00. They are the only tennis shoes I buy. My husband was in the military and for PT running shoes he preferred nike or adidas running shoes. He could not use Rebok at all because they would give him shin splints.

My husband and I both buy our shoes at Garry Gribble's Running Sports www.garrygribbles.com. They have stores in MO and KS. They watch the way that you walk and pick a shoe for you based on your needs. Also, they keep the information on file for when you come in the next time. I have had plantar fasciitis a few times in the past and NEVER want it again. Therefore, I have learned the lesson of buying quality shoes. Everyone is extremely helpful and we have never had a bad experience. They have a return policy if you are not satisfied, but to be honest we have never had to use it.
