I will be getting the LEEP procedure done in a few days and Im just wondering if anyone can share any info about their experience, and more importantly if having it done affected future pregnancies. Thanks.

I had a LEEP done in Feb of this year. They say you will be out for about a week, but I was up the same day. I didn't even fill my meds. It went great and as for affecting pregnancies I hadn't had a problem. I got pregnant in March of this year and I'm 7 1/2 months. So, I hope it goes as well for you as it did for me.

I had one last year. My ob/gyn perferred to do it at a surgery center with a light sedation (I was put under but not deep). He said it was much better that way. I was surprised at how little pain/bleeding there was. Just some tylenol or advil. It wasn't so bad at all.

If you've already had the initial test/scrape done, the actual procedure itself is not nearly as bad. It is uncomfortable for the few minutes it takes and does hurt mildly afterwards, like cramps. I cannot remember the cramping lasting more than a couple of days. The discharge afterwards seemed to last a while, for me anyway. I think I built it up in my head that when all was said and done it really wasn't so bad. I hope this helps.

I had the LEEP procedure done in February 2004. It was relatively painless. I was concerned about future pregnancies as well. I am happy to say that I now have 2 children. YEA!
Good luck,

I had a LEEP before I was pregnant, and I have had two children since. It did not affect the pregnancies in anyway.

The procedure was not bad at all, quick and pretty painless actually. I did not have a long or difficult recovery. And have never had a bad pap since then.

If you have any specific questions feel free to contact me.

I had mine done 5 years ago in the doctor's office and it was similar to what everyone described. I had a normal and safe pregnancy and delivery 2.5 years after that. The only other thing I would add is that the burning/charring smell is correct and you may even see smoke. They put a vacuum thing down there to catch it. At the time, not funny. Now, very hilarious! I think of Bill Cosby stand up routine from "Himself" where he is at the dentist and he says "Smoke is coming from my mouth!" Oh, what we women endure! Blessings to you!

I also had a leep about 7 years ago. Just a little uncomfortable from the local. It is a tender area to get a shot. But other than that it was a success. I have had 2 beautiful healthy baby girls since my leep. I wish you the best of Luck.

Hello S..

My experience was actually no issue at all...however I was 6 months pregnant and they had to go in due to the severity...They also burned the pre-cancerous cells verses freezing AND they put me under. I did not have any cramps or any bad pain after the procedure where as all the other experiences I have heard from friends is that for one...theirs were frozen off, they were awake, and the pain was bad for days to follow. Now, people have told me they don't do burning in this procedure but that is what they did in my case and it may have been since I was pregnant...maybe the after effect while pregnant could cause labor...i'm not sure but good news for you, I had my son Styhlor with no complications and also my girl Kyrah a few years later as well with no complications. Hope this helps

No problems affecting pregnancy.

Mine did not hurt ONE bit and I'm a Big Baby :) And my pre cancerous cells were in a pretty developed stage so my procedure was not a light one. Never smelled burning, no smoke, etc. Eeegads! That would scare me!

My OB-Gyn is top notch (professor at Baylor so she actually trains all the Ob residents).

Here's what she did so that I did not feel the administration of any of the shots (for anesthesia)....she kept telling me to COUGH! She made me do it a bunch of times and I couldn't understand why. Well, while I was coughing, she was adminstering the anesthesia. I felt nothing! Ask your doctor.

Lastly, so that you never need to go through this again, hopefully you know the typical main reason why we need this procedure in the first place. It is usually due to HPV which is all I am going to say here. If you don't already know that, discuss with your doctor.

Good Luck.

I will agree with the experience that Lori and Valerie wrote about, uncomfortable, not terrible, no problem having a child.
What is different is that I had the procedure 10 years ago, and I was told it is 90% effective for 5 years, which it was. For the past five years I have had abnormal paps and several biopsies, etc. However, this is normal for someone who can't get rid of hpv, which apparently, I can't.

I do want to tell you that I remember and unpleasant burnt/charred smell during the procedure. This is because they are using a laser, which burns the tissue.

I had one done about 6 years ago. I remember being really scared, but the nurse and the doctor were very nice and explained it all to me. During the procedure, it felt like I was having bad menstrual cramps and that continued after it was done, but it only took a day or so to feel better. Overall it was not too painful or difficult. I have had 2 healthy babies since then with no complications from my Leep procedure. I've also had zero abnormal pap smears since then as well. After the procedure, I believe I saw my OB every 6 months for 2 years then went back to a yearly exam. Good luck and I hope you have a good experience with no problems.

I had a LEEP done about 8 years ago. It wasn't the most pleasant procedure, but it was very quick. I was back at work the next day, bleeding only just a little. All I needed was some over the counter medication to help with the slight discomfort (just like menstrual cramps). I wouldn't want to have it again, but if I had to, I know that I could handle it.

When I started to try to get pregnant, I asked my OB/GYN about it and he said there wouldn't be any problems. I miscarried once and asked him if this would have been from the LEEP, but he assured me that it wasn't. Well, 3 months after my miscarriage, I became pregnant again and I now have a beautiful 18 month old daughter.

I hope this helps! Good luck!

I had to have the LEEP a few years ago and my experience seems to be like everyone elses...n complications. My ob/gyn does the procedure at an outpatient surgery center under light sedation. I was only a little crampy afterwards but only took regular tylenol. I rested for the first day and used a heating pad but by the next day felt fine. I just had my third child so I did not experience any difficulty with pregnancy afterwards...I had to have the LEEP bc a pap biopsy came back highly abnormal but I did not have fertility issues before having the procedure either.... Take care. Hope all goes well for you.
