My 13 year old has been asking for a tumblr account. Her motivation seems fine (to follow pokemon and animal crossing tumblrs) so i don't have too many concerns. any advice welcome but especially from parents of teens who use tumblr.

First, I say use all the punctuation you want. I hate when people post replies that criticize how someone writes. This is not a grammar site. Sheesh.
Anyway, my daughter is 13 and does not have a tumblr account. She does have instagram, vine, and a couple others. Honestly, she hasn't asked for a tumblr account.
Her motivation does seem fine, and is probably genuine. What happens sometimes is that they get on for one reason and other things end up happening. My daughter wanted instagram to be able to post funny things with her friends. But as I said, other things happen. Now a bunch of boys follow her and other people post things I don't like. I'm ok with what she has, I check it often and she unfollows or blocks people who post inappropriate things.
My point is that if you say ok, make sure to keep tabs on it. Your daughter may be sweet, but others are not. Just keep on top of what she is seeing.

It's basically another social site for sharing. Some is good, some not so good. They follow people's posts and people follow theirs. I personally have an account on each one just for the purpose of "following" what my daughter does. I think it helps me keep track of what she is "in" to, bands etc.
I have come to the conclusion that this is not the world I grew up in but, it is the world my daughter is growing up in. I would rather her be informed and make good choices with my guidance than sneak around and do it because I wont allow it. I have her usernames and passwords...if I see anything I deem inappropriate, I tell her and explain whay and why it isn't ok. So far we haven't had any major battles. She did try to change her passwords on me so she lost her internet privelages for a bit.
The other big one is Gifboom (like animated picture sharing). They also use kik (short voice messages that delete after 3 seconds or something...no way to monitor that one) lol
I strongly recommend you go to the link in another post for internet-safety.yoursphere.com. This is a great site that helps parents navigate ALL social media and the ways kids use it. The site is not against social media at all but the author is also very cautious. She says this about Tumblr: "The fact of the matter is, Tumblr, like many websites, blog platforms and social networks, does not have the content filters or oversight in place to ensure a healthy experience for your child."
No worse than Facebook, Instagram, Vine, waiting alone at the bus stop, going in a public restroom alone.
It's more about how you have raised them. Sure anyone can be targeted but her knowing right from wrong and when/how to come to you are more important.
No-for every lovely, responsible teen, there are hundreds, perhaps thousands of weirdos that are trying to undermine their decency. In the two seconds that it took me to read about what the h a tumblr is, I thought, this can't be safe. Too much opportunity for a world of hurt here.
Thought you meant could they use a tumbler cup to drink from. I use one. No idea what the account thing is!
Never heard of it....or Vine. Maybe I need to brush up on my internet sites.
it seems to be a twitter/facebook/instagram thing honestly - they all have goods and bads to them and it's the user that matters most
