Is It Suppose to Hurt

Girl, mine killed from the time I got it in until 2 weeks later, then for about 2 weeks around each period. Told my GYN, she told me to "give it more time to get used to my body." Had it for a year. Got that sucker yanked out and haven't looked back. Good luck.

ETA: I agree that it does depend on if you've had kids..I hadn't had any kids when I got my IUD in, so my GYN warned me that it would be a bit more difficult since everything was still "tightly packed in." :)

Sounds like they had a hard time putting it in, which may be the cause of some of the pain. I remember I was crampy the day of though. Unless it continues to get worse, I would wait until tomorrow. If it's still the same, call your doctor to be sure it's in correctly.

If she was probing around with a bunch of insturments and tore you a little... that's gonna hurt.

Take 600-800mg of ibuprofen and some tylenol OR Midol (mild muscle relaxer) and whatever it doesn't have in it (Some versions of midol have tylenol, ibuprofen, or naproxen... just read the back of the box...and take what it doesn't have). If you're still a mess an hour later call the nurseline.

It depends on the person. I didn't have any pain. BUT I have the birthing hips from doom. So I think that is why it didn't hurt.

Talk to your doctor tomorrow if the pain hasn't subsided. Those things are capable of tearing through your uterine wall :/ It's listed in their "this could happen" list. My mom had to have hers removed and it caused some other problems for her. By all means I'm not trying to scare you, just want you to be aware and everybody is different when it comes to B/C. It is the first day, so I can't imagine it feeling like nothing happened especially if several instruments were used. It might just need a slight adjustment, but I wouldn't hesitate to talk to your doctor.

My second IUD I had made me hurt a lot I could barely stand up and I am not one to complain. I had it taken out. I don't think they should hurt like this I would call the Dr. and get it removed. I wish I knew then what I know now I would never had one in the first place or taken BC pills either. Hope you feel better soon.

When I got the paragard put in I almost passed out. I had no idea it would hurt so bad. I was shaky and felt like I would throw up. Awful! My cramps were immediate and they lasted for 3 days. Im not talking regular cramps im talking labor, double over pains. The doc said it can happen as your body basically tries to expel it. Mine did not come out and it finally stopped but man! The advil I was taking did nothing to help! Hang in there, it really is worth it! But yes, when I got mine it was bad!!

I had mine inserted in May and I remember cramping pretty bad and I too have a high tolerance for pain as well. The first period was a doozy too. I had been on birth control and had breakthrough bleeding for 6 weeks!! Then I finally stopped bleeding for a week then it was time to go get the iud and by dang it I started to bleed again then a few days later I was done and then maybe another week past and dang it here comes my period and it was a doozy! Here it is August though and I am having to say that I don't regret it one bit-it is sooooooo nice not having to "think" about it and remember to "do" anything.
As one other poster said.....be aware that it could puncture the uterus. I didn't let that scare me though. I was butt naked on the table with the doc about to insert mine when he told me another one of the providers had just put one in yesterday and it punctured the uterus and the lady had to have it surgically removed. He said that is why he always always always does a sonogram afterwards to be sure it was positioned correctly and everything. I was sitting there thinking "Why in the world is he telling me this NOW!!!" and he apologized and said I'm sorry but I have to tell you these things-it CAN happen. I trusted my gut and went through it and so far I have not had a single problem other than that first month of being really crampy and the first period being a real doozy. The trick is to make sure your advil doesn't wear off and the pain get ahead of you. Actually I prefer to take Aleve because it last for 12 hours compared to the Motrin and if I remember correctly the Motrin wasn't even really touching the pain to begin with. My friend told me she had to take her muscle relaxers the first month she had hers.....I don't have muscle relaxers and as I said I tend to have a high tolerance for pain so usually don't take any kind of meds but I did resort to aleve I think for that first month. You will absolutely love this in a few more months-my periods have gotten a little heavier but not anything that bad and actually the periods have shortened for me. I was typically 6-7 days now its about 4-5 days! ;()) I will take the heavier bleeding rather than risk getting pregnant or having to be on a hormonal birth control pill that I have to remember to take every day. I just buy the super absorbant tampons now and that does the job. I know each woman is different and each one even has different experiences with the same thing but I am really starting to love this whole iud thing.......good luck my dear!

I'm a little surprised by this and by Mama2B's response...yikes! I'd say this is not normal. I've had an IUD put in twice and it's never hurt or even cramped, not really even a little bit. I'd call your doctor's after hours line. If you're not comfortable with that call an ask-a-nurse line. I'm sure at least one of the local hospitals runs one, just google it.
