Is It Ok to Swim in an Indoor Chlorine Pool When Pregnant

I am 23 weeks pregnant. I'm going to ask my doc at my next appt of course, but wondering if its safe to swim in chlorine pools when pregnant? It would be the indoor pool at my gym. I know they do regular water testing and even send water samples to an actual laboratory for testing, but just wonder if chlorine water is safe to be in while pregnant....anyone know? Is there ever a time when it is unsafe? Is there certain level it should be at?

What can I do next?

I've never heard of it being a problem. I swam all summer in an outdoor chlorine pool when I was pregnant with my second.

Yes, it's fine. Pools are fine....that's why you have the mucus plug...it stops stuff from getting up to the baby.

You need to avoid hot tubs and saunas and tanning beds...while YOU can "cool off" your baby can't.

When my youngest son was born - I was at the pool every chance I got!! he's now 11 years old!

I would if I were not effaced. Once you start to efface, I would stay out of the pool, but that's just me...

Well, let's put it this way. Many hospitals that operate fitness centers offer prenatal water aerobics classes. So yes, I would say that the ACOG considers it to be quite safe.

I swam at a health club until just a few days before my daughter was born. I didn't have any issues but today you can't drink anything but water and not eat anything but fresh fruit and veggies you grow yourself in a controlled environment....in my day we ate food and even ate tuna. Life sure changes.

It's a great idea to swim when pregnant! Makes you feel weightless!!! I have never been told to not swim and have been pregnant during the summer for all three of my pregnancies and swim 1-3x a week!!

Gee, I did and never thought about it. I have pictures of me somewhere superduper preggo. If it's any help my sons were both over eight pounds, one is in an MBA program and the other in college. So I guess in my case nothing seeped in to damage them. BUT always check with your doctor.

You know the water you drink is treated....

And, when pools are properly treated, that water is 'cleaner' than what comes out of many taps! (this came from the pool folks when my parents had one installed years back)

As long as you don't go in the hot tub, you should be fine. Swimming is great exercise when you're pregnant. Congratulations!

Just be sure the pool is really clean. I didn't swim in any pool while I was pregnant. My obi-gynecologist told me, "no baths, hot tubs and no hot dogs."

I think it is perfectlly fine to go in pools while pregnant. I delivered two healthy babies, and I worked in a laboratory. Being a chemist and tested water samples, chlorine and fluorine are in our drinking water too. Just don't go in hot tubs.

Of course it's safe. You've never seen pregnant women swimming in pools before? I'd rather swim in a pool while pregnant than in a lake or the ocean.

Just saying.
