Is Anyone Else Dealing with Adult Onset Asthma?

I was dx at age 28, but as I look back probably had some exercise induced asthma as a teen. That was almost 10 years ago for me, it has gotten better for me over the years. The controller medicines like advair (I take this one) and symbicort work well, I also take singulair, prevacid and zyrtec...all to help my asthma. Yes, it's alot of meds, but they have helped, so does the scarf over your nose/mouth in winter, and no fires in the fireplace. Although this year we tried the sawdust bricks and I was able to tolerate that. Also, no real Christmas trees. Yes, it alters your life, but it also does continue to improve on the meds over the years. But I always make sure I have an inhaler on me at all times, and use it about a half hour before exercise. My mother has asthma and uses Advair which seems to help. The doctor always recommends that in the winter she covers her mouth with a scarf so she is not breathing in the cold air.

I have it too. I got it at 23. I go outside with my daughter during the winter to play. My daughter told me to take 2 puffs of my inhaler 30 minutes before going outside and cover my nose and mouth with a scarf and that does the trick. I know it frustrating but its not a death sentence and doesn't have to hinder u from doing stuff with ur children. Just take precautions. Hope this helps. **kim**

Yes! Same thing here! I tried meds, too, but REALLY didn't like what they did to me. I started going to a chiropractor and that has helped a LOT over the year's time. I have also tried some herbal rememdies, that worked ok. Now I am onto vitamin supplementing, which seems to be doing the trick. I am short on time now, but would be glad to go into more of it. The tricky part is getting off of the meds that you are on. Some of them you have to wean yourself off. My email is ____@____.com.

Are you sure you have asthma? Not to discredit your doctor, but I was diagnosed with "exercise induced asthma" in my 20's. By excercise, I guess he meant walking to the mailbox, because I couldn't even do that. Anyway, I got a second opinion and found that my tonsills were very infected and needed to be removed. Once they were gone, I could breath again.
If the medication isn't working, maybe it wouldn't hurt to seek a second opinion.

I also have asthma. If the meds you are on have your doctor prescribe something else. It took a few tries to find what worked for me. You can go out in the cold as long as you have you mouth and nose covered with a scarf and don't over do it. Also I had 2 cats which I was found to be allergic to. Sadly they had to go.

My husband has it. He's probably always had it, but he's a firefighter and it didn't really start to bother him until after he responded to WTC on 9/11. Since then, he's been on Singulair. Really had helped him. He also has a rescue inhaler.

I was diagnosed with exercise and allery induced asthma in my late 20's - about 10 years ago. I see an allergist to treat it. Advair works well but you have to really stick to using it - I admit that once I am under control I stop using it. I have an albuterol inhaler too for "sudden" symptoms or I use it when I know I am going to be doing something that will make my asthma worse - like if I start working out again after a while or go out into the cold or anything. My dr said it was fine to use it as a preventative. I think if I stick with the advair though I don't need the albuterol at all though...I am just lazy with the advair!!! I have to say that when I am in better cardio shape that my asthma doesn't bother as much and my doctor agreed with that. So if you can get some meds to get it under control and then do cardio exercise you should be fine. Mine bothers me year round - my allergies bother me year round and I have a cat too so I'm pretty much dealing with it constantly - in particular the last few weeks have been really bad - must be the spring allergies. See a dr and keep trying the meds until you find something.

I got adult asthma when I was 22yrs old. I am now 27 with two little boys, 2 1/2 and 9 months. I know exactly how you feel, but the winter months for asthma really are far worse. My doctors have me on Singulair, Advair HFA (aerosol inhaler), Veramyst nasal spray and Proventil inhaler. In the winter it works ok, but I am on antibiotics every 2 months due to chronic bronchitis from the asthma. Ask your doctor about the Veramyst spray, it is really good and has some of the same steroids that are in Advair. Hope this helps.
