Insurance Help-Husband Took a Severance Package

My husband took a severance package from Dell. Cobra insurance is way too expensive. Does anyone know of a good insurance plan for a family while he is not working? Are any other families going through this situation.

Contact CHARLIE HICKS; 8430 REBAWOOD; HUMBLE, TX 77346; ###-###-####. He and his wife have their own agency and do a wonderful job with things like this. Their prices are very reasonable. You can't beat them.

Look into CHIP for your children. They offer insurance for children when the family doesn't make enough money. Also, tap into all of the governmental resources you can. WIC, free lunch from school, etc. I have a good friend whose took a package from Dell and has been out of work (active;y seeking work) for over a year.

Good luck.

Hi, I understand what you are going thru. We have to buy our own health insurance and while in the transition, we tried Cobra. Way too expensive.

I am a licensed independent health insurance agent in Texas. I would be happy to run a free / no obligation quote for you and your family. It only takes a few minutes and I can do it while you are on the phone. Don't worry, I don't call and bother you or try to pressure you into making a decision. I am just here to help. I can do health & life insurance and answer any questions you may have. Feel free to call me at ###-###-####. Good Luck! Connie

Hi, I don't know about a family plan but the Texas CHIP program is great. It's mentioned below but implies you can't get it unless you are low income...this is only for the free program. We had a pretty good income level when we had to use it. We had to put our kids on it when the company my husband used to work for let their insurance lapse (needless to say he doesn't work there anymore!). I think it's $100 per month/per child. Goodluck!

Be very careful. Plans that you buy yourself are VERY different than group plans. Do you plan on getting pregnant again? In the state of Texas, only group plans cover maternity & delivery (it is not seen as a profitable and deemed a "lifestyle choice" !) Also, if anyone in your family is diagnosed with something serious, consumer plans may drop you and then the illness can be qualified as a pre-existing condition forever and not covered by future insurance. I was in this position, we budgeted took the cobra as a bridge until we could get on another group plan. If you can't afford the whole family, maybe you can just keep some family members on it. Remember, any accident or illness can bankrupt families with no or limited insurance. I don't mean to scare you, just be VERY careful. My friend almost decided to go without the Cobra when her husband got laid off. Thank god they decided to keep at least him on the plan because he was diagnosed with cancer 2 months later. He will be ok, and they fortunately will not have their savings and retirement wiped out.

That all being said here are some options:
http://www.texashealthoptions.com/cp/unemployed.html This site covers everything for people who recently lost their job. There's even a link to try and find different group plans. I'm sorry your in this position. Good luck.

I agree with you that Cobra insurance is way too expensive. When my husband became a consultant (aka self-employed) we had to find our own insurance. We got a reference from my father-in-law. He is in Houston, he created an insurance package(medical, life, etc) for us through various companies. His name is Herb Thomas with National Care Insurance, phone # ###-###-####. I hope you find what you need to cover your family.

Hi. We are self-employed and have always had to buy our own insurance. Currently we use Assurant Health, http://www.assuranthealth.com/corp/ah/. While it's not perfect it is okay coverage. It's about $295/month for the two of us and our one child. It doesn't cover maternity so if you do plan on becoming pregnant you will need to consider options. I am 6 months pregnant and we chose to go with a birth center since it is less expensive and I feel like I am getting great care. Most health care providers will work with you on payment plans if the maternity costs are not covered. I hope this helps.

As stella pointed out most individual plan have a lot of exclusions, so when researching plans make sure you look at what is covered before you buy.

Up until last year I had individual coverage for myself and my son through BCBS of TX and it was about $200 a month. We had $25 copays, prescription coverage and a deductible for hospitalization. Maternity benefits were not covered and there were a lot of exclusions, but I didn't have much of a choice. Some coverage is better than none. (I agree Cobra is way too expensive). So if you can live with the exclusions I would suggest to check out the major plans BCBS, United Healthcare, CIGNA and Aetna and see what you can find. I would suggest doing your own research instead of going through a broker, but you may find a broker saves you some money.

I have worked in the insurance industry for many years and I know how difficult it is to find the right plan for you and your family. I'd be happy to help you further if you have any more specific questions, just let me know!

We had to get temporary insurance last year when there was a lapse in coverage when my husband was between jobs. We know some insurance agents who did not personally write temporary plans, but told us that Golden Rule was one of the good, reputable short-term insurance companies. We ended up needing coverage for only a month, and I think it cost us about $200. Cobra would have been $1500. Yikes!

We did find cheaper insurance plans online from some other companies, but our insurance agent friends couldn't guarantee that they were reputable.

We currently use Blue Cross Blue Shield for the kids only. Great price for the level of insurance (great insurance coverage). I and their dad have individual policies through another source. I have heard very good things about CHIPS if you can qualify.
