Hi- My son 5 weeks is having problems with reflux. Dr prescribed Zantac for him. However I hate to give him medicine so young. Is anyone familiar with pediatric chiropractors that help infants with reflux? I was told about this from a co-worker, and i just started doing research on it. Please let me know if you have had anyexperiece with this or know where to find one. Our pediatrician has no referrals for one. Thank you

My son goes to Dr. Merideth Van Horn at Hands on Health off of Hall Johnson in Grapevine. She is absolutely wonderful. He has been going there since he was 2 months old - he is now 9 1/2 months. He never had reflux so I don't know anything about that but generally speaking he is in excellent health, especially since he was a preemie baby. Although we have had a few ear infections, I think it helps keep them under control.

If you decide to go to Dr. Merideth, please tell her J. M. sent you. YOu will love her! Good luck, I too hate to see the little ones suffer so much.

You might look into a D.O. who does osteopathy as well as pediatrics rather than an M.D. or chiropractor. They learn how to do manipulation and things like that. Good luck!

Brandi - Check out icpa4kids.org (International Chiropractic Pediatric Association). They have a "Find a Doctor" page. My chiropractor had referred me to Dr. Haggerton, but he also said that anyone listed on the wedsite would be good. I take my kids to Dr. Alexia Grantland in Grapevine and she is excellent. good luck

Parker Chiropractic school runs a clinic. I think 20 or 30$ a visit. They have professors who Iam sure specialize in this. My sister in-law took her 2 month old and had this done with good results.

Also have you heard of Gripe water? It is natural...has ginger root and such in it. Might help calm reflux down.

Both of my babies spit up like crazy...all the time.. and grew out of it on thier own around 9 months. I would reccomend staying away from the meds...unless your baby is in pain all the time and you have tried other things with no success.

Hi Brandie,

I spoke to my neighbor last night regarding your baby. He is a chiropractor, though he does not specialize in infants yet. He is taking a course right now, as his wife is expecting their first baby. He said he would most definitely recommend the Haggertons, and might even take his newborn there for counsel himself.
I'm fully aware that most medications will work. However, the last year I have dramatically changed my position on medications. I am all for a more natural way of healing, and chiropractic care provides just that. There will always be those who simply do not believe in it.
I was a naysayer for years until I got up one day, 4 weeks postpartum and couldn't walk. My ob wanted to give me muscle relaxers, which would have nixed my breastfeeding. I reluctantly called my husbands chiropractor, and I was up walking that afternoon.
My advice is to at least go for a consultation. Ask for references pertaining to other infants with reflux. If you are not comfortable with it, then by all means continue the medication. I wish you all the luck and pray your precious little one finds relief soon.

I'll STRONGLY second the Haggertons. Their specialty is dealing w/ kiddos. They are located off of Harwood, just east of Hurstview. There is that Super Walmart at the corner of Harwood & Precinct Line, and they are about a half mile behind it. Going east on Harwood, they are on the left in a small set of business "houses" near the intersection of Cimmaron, before you get to Hurstview. They accept insurance, too & are just a pleasure to work with.

In re: to reflux specifically, they can advise you better, but I have heard of chiropractic treatment for infant reflux.

It's worth a go!

Dr. Cindy Haggerton at Lifetime Family Wellness in Hurst. I started going to her during my recent pregnancy when the baby was breech. The baby turned around, and I had a normal delivery. Pregnant women and infants is her specialty.

I do not have experiance with reflux per se but I have a chiro that is at Arapaho and Dallas North Tollway. His name is Roger Clifford and has been adjusting my children for about 2 and a half years now. He has experiance in adjusting young infants so you might be able to go to him. Also he is not just pediatric. His number is ###-###-####. His hours are 9-1 and 3-6 monday thru thursday and 9-1 on friday.

Hi Brandie,

I have a almost 5 month old son who had/has severe acid reflux. His doctor actually prescribed him the same Zantac medicine. He has been taking it since he was a little short of 2 months, and I will tell you that it actually works. He does the spit up thing less now, if at all most of the time. The only other thing, I can recommend is feeding him a smaller bottle, for instance, a 6 ounce bottle every 3-4 hours, which also helps with the acid reflux, it has worked for me, that along with the medicine.

The only problem I had with the medicine, is that, like adults, after taking it for so long, his system got immuned to it, so I stopped giving it to him for about a week or so, then started up again and it all worked out fine. Your Dr. should have told you to give the Zantac to him until he starts to eat solids. I just started introducing my son to solids ( baby food @ 4 months ) and he barely spits up now at all. So I would suggest for you to at least try the meds for a minute to see if it helps, and then if it doesnt try other things.

I will pray for your situation, i hated to see my son looking miserableand irritated from spitting up, so I totally understand your concern. Good luck!

Hi Brandie,

I don't have the answer to your question, but I wanted to tell you that I feel for what you're going through. My son also has reflux and has been on Prevacid for about 3 weeks now. So far there has been no significant improvement. I hope you find a chiropractor and that it helps your son. Good luck!

My 6 month old son has had problems with reflux and has been to a chiropractor. I didn't take him to a "pediatric" chiropractor, but to my own chiropractor (I have also had my 4 year old daughter adjusted by him since I have been going to Dr. Ruland and since she was 5 months). My son has had good success with his adjustments and it does help his reflux. Dr. Ruland is very good with the little ones, very gentle and loving. He has said that adjusting babies are one of the greatest rewards for him.

If you are interested in checking him out:

Dr. Ruland
Chiro-Plus Clinic
###-###-#### (Fossil Creek area- Western Center)
or
###-###-#### (Grandbury Rd. FT Worth)

If you take him, let them know A. LaRue sent you their way!
Good Luck

Hi Brandie. My husband is a chiro in Watauga. He has been in practice for 8 years and does work with children. We have a 3 year old who gets adjusted on a monthly basis. He does not get the common illnesses that most kids get. (He does go to preschool 4 days a week, so he is around kids) Bonus is that he has never had an ear infection. I would suggest that you call and talk to him or his office manager, Kathy. (If you have ever been to a chiro yourself, the adjustment for a child is nothing like it.)

Alliance Spine Institute
Dr. Scott Ruth

Hope this helps....

Hey Brandie,

My daughter, when she was first brought home from the hosptital was doing the projectile vomiting for about two to three weeks. My husband is going to school to be a chiropractor and so he was familar with the success that children can have with chiropractic adjustments. I have to admit, as a first time mom, i was nervous b/c when you think of chiropractor you think rought adjusting but thats not teh case.. Kobi has been adjusted only two times after those first few weeks and now at almost four months old she has NO problem.. so i would highly recommend it! good luck!
God bless,
J.

No offense to the other response, but personally I think it's best to give our bodies a chance to work through things without medications...and many times chiropractic care will help your body do what it is supposed to do! I have two kids under 3.5 years and neither one have ever been on an antibiotic because any time they have a cold or ear infection starting, I take them in for a chiropractic adjustment. This boosts their immune system and helps them heal faster without drugs. My family goes to Genesis Spine Associates in Grapevine. ###-###-####. My friend's two daughters also had problems with reflux and Dr. Jordan and Dr. Hasbini (sp?) were able to help them tremendously! I highly recommend them. Good luck!
