I Think My Baby Might Be Teething, but Not Completely Sure!!

I think my 4 month old son might be teething, when he's awake he is squirming around much more then usual. He always is shoving his fists in his mouth, even right after he is done eating. He is drooling a lot, and arching his back when he is laying flat. I gave him a teething ring, which seemed to help at first but then after a little while, he'll start crying harder then he was before I gave him the teether, it's one of the ones that are chilled in the refrigerator.
Should I go and get him baby anbesol or something like that. Both my mom and grandma told me to rub just a tiny tiny bit of whiskey on his gums, but I'm EXTREMELY hesitant to do that.
Just wondering if any moms out there can help. Thank you :)
He is not inconsolable, he is sleeping right now in fact, but when he is awake, if I'm not distracting him with something, he seems to be in pain, and if there is anyway I can ease his pain, I'd like to do so

What can I do next?

Sounds like teething. You can try frozen washclothes, anbesol, or even a dose of tylenol if he's having trouble sleeping at night.

Hi A.,

If you think he is then he probably is. My ped told me way back in the day when my DS went through this that the process is as much itchy as it is painful, especially in the very beginning. I swore by this method. I would wet the corner of a clean, folded washcloth and put it in the freezer in a ziplock. After frozen I would let him gnaw on that and it was very soothing. The cold helps with the pain relief and the texture helps with the itching.
baby anbesol is okay but so is pediatric motrin if you want to go the OTC route.

Lastly, each baby is different and each tooth is different for each baby so try to be patient and remember you can't spoil and infant so don't hesitate to hold, rock and empathize with him whenever he needs it. :-) S.

My third child got her first tooth at 4 months. Surprised the heck out of us! My other 2 didn't get their first tooth until 6 or 7 months. But one day I thought I saw something and put my finger in there and there was the tiny point of her first tooth broken through.
I wouldn't use topical stuff like Ambisol. It's really not good for kids and doesn't work for very long. Tylenol is OK. Giving lots of things to chew on is good.

I just want to add that both my kids did this at that age too and my Pediatrician said it was unlikely for them to get teeth and although it looked like teething they probably wouldn't have teeth before 7-8 months and it was so true for my kids! Obviously kids pop teeth through at all ages, but don't worry if you don't see any teeth but keep seeing all the signs.

I would keep using the teething rings/toys, wet washcloths are good, so are frozen waffles. I used teething tablets and I loved them and thought they worked really well.

Some people will tell you he's too young, but I think you should trust your gut. My kid got his first tooth at 4 months, and then nothing for many more months.

Definitely rotate the teething rings so there's always a cold one in the freezer. They don't stay cold for long once they're out. That's why he cries again after a little while. Some people use a wet & frozen washcloth too but keep an eye on him.

The baby Anbesol wears off too. So does the whiskey. Some people say vodka too. I didn't give my kid alcohol, no matter what my mother-in-law said.

And do call the pediatrician any time you have a question like this - they take calls all the time from new moms. It's not an emergency so don't call at 3 AM, but do call anytime during regular hours and someone will surely call you back later that day.

Good luck! By the time you get this figured out, he'll be on to something new! Ah, the challenges of parenting! We all support you though!

4 months old is not too soon for teething!
Yeah I heard about the whiskey on the gums thing but I never did it.
Try giving him a frozen waffle to gnaw on.
You can try anbesol - it may or may not help.
Teething can just be so painful!
Poor baby.
You'll all get through it eventually!

That's definitely not too young to be teething. My first didn't get her first tooth until around 6 months, but I know plenty of babies that get it earlier. I never used Anbesol. Give him some Tylenol and a cold teething ring. Avoid giving any frozen food at this age due to possible choking if a piece comes loose. They do have teething nets that you can put cold fruits in, but I didn't use that until my daughter was around 6 months and had started solids. My daughter used to wake up crying in the night from teething, and really all you can do is try to ease the pain and comfort them. This too shall pass!

Try Tylenol along with a cooled teether. NOT alcohol of any kind! It doesn't take much to have a dangerous effect on a baby. I read somewhere that Ambesol was not the best to use either. If too much is used, it can numb the throat and cause problems with swallowing and cause choking.
