I Think My 3 Year Old Has a UTI. :(

For the last few days my DD who is newly 3 and potty trained has been having a ton of accidents. I thought it was odd, but we've been pretty busy this week. Tonight, she told me that her pee hurts and then she went potty (just trickles). She was fine after that. Just a few mintutes ago, she woke up crying and holding her privates. I keep her in a diaper at night b/c of accidents and I asked her if she wanted a diaper change. She was weeping through it, but no rash or anything. She just kept touching her vagina and weeping. :(
She's ok now and back asleep for now. I'm going to sleep in her room in case she has any issues and will call the doc in the am, but this has me worried. I know how much those things suck and I just don't know what to do for her!!

What can I do next?

It sounds possible that she has a UTI. Girls that young do have them. The doctor will have you come in so that she can give a urine sample for testing.

Hi Bethany----So sorry to hear your little one is miserable. It's the worst feeling in the world to not be able to 'make it better' immediately. But, she will get better so just love her until she does.

Be sure she is drinking lots and lots of water to keep things flushed. You might get advice for cranberry juice but that will not work with an infection. It will help to keep bacteria from settling on the wall of the bladder (to help prevent and uti) but you must use unsweetened juice and that would be hard for a 3 year old to drink. I use it but sweeten slightly with liquid stevia, a zero calorie plant based sweetener.

Be sure to give her probiotics if she is prescribed antibiotics. This will help to repopulate the good bacteria that lives in the gut and will be eliminated with the antibiotic. Good luck. D.

You know how sensitive our girly parts can be. Usually, the main issue is that they don't wipe enough. I usually sit them in a warm bath (no bubbles) when they get any pain or redness down there, and that always does the trick.

My 4 year old daughter has had 2 of them. She was really red down in that area. All she said was that it hurt. She was not in a lot of pain, but I took her to the doctor and she had to pee in a cup. They gave her some meds and it was all better a couple days later. So I would take her to the doctor to have them check her out. Hope she gets better soon!

Sorry she is in pain Bethany. This is really quite common with girls especially while potty training. She needs to learn to wipe properly. Here is what I told my daughter and she hasn't had any issues since. After she goes potty, she needs to stand up off the potty, squat down, and then wipe front first and then back. Then throw the tissue in the toilet and flush. I would make sure she did it this way for awhile. I was very firm that she needed to wipe front to back or else that is what makes the peepee hurt. She understood and with practice is a great wiper. I think they really need to get up and squat down though, at this age they are too little to get a good wipe still sitting on the potty. My doc also said to put a bit of Vaseline on her vagina every night for a bit to lessen the irritation and burning. Your little one definitely needs to go in to the doc and get some antibiotics if it is a uti and get that cleared up. Also make sure she is drinking plenty of water. The best thing you can do is teach her to wipe properly to try and prevent future uti's. It can be hard, especially when they are preschool during the day, but she'll get the hang of it with practice.
