I Don't Know What to Do Any More

My 2 year old son has been experiencing weight loss, loss of appetite, some vomiting, and diarrhea for about 6 months now. He will lose weight and then gain it back and then lose again. And we are not talking ounces, this is like a pound a week for 2-3 weeks then takes a month to get it back. We have tried dietary changes like no dairy or no wheats and that only works for about 2 weeks and then comes back. We have seen an allergy specialist and his tests were negative to everything. They have recently put him on medicine for something that has to deal with bad water (you can get this if you travel alot and we don't, sorry I can't remember what it is called). I am at wits end. If any one has any ideas on something else that might help him I would greatly appreciate some input!

What can I do next?

I would suggest going to Dr. Harnsberger. She is a pediatric gastrenterologist down by the cottonwood hospital. Her number is ###-###-####. The address is 5770 s. 250 e. #330. She tends to be booked out so call asap. She is very friendly and good with kids. She recently diagnosed my son with Celiac disease (no wheat/gluten). Good luck!!

Hi Rashae,

This sounds very similiar to what my friend was experiencing with her daughter. After exhausting all options and preforming the last test they could think of the doctor finally discovered the problem was caused by cyctic fibrosis. I really hope it isn't this, but you may want to consider testing for it.

Blessings,
M.

I understand you have tried eliminating wheat, but how about Gluten? Celiac disease can cause these symptoms. Please mention it to your physician!

I'm so sad reading your email! How utterly frustrating to have no answers that make sense and watching your son lose weight continually. I have three suggestions.

When they checked for allergies, did they check for Celiac Disease? I know you have reduced wheat, but it could possibly be the gluten that is in all kinds of grain and is an additive in most processed food. It would be worth it to find out, and there are plenty of gluten-free foods on the market now so that he doesn't feel left out. I've also read that 1 in every 133 people has a gluten intolerance, but most don't know it.

My other comment is that the woman that mentioned ProBiotics makes a very good point. ProBiotics really help the body to digest the nutrients in food if the system is having trouble. We were recently on antibiotics for strep throat and all of us ended up with horrible stomach aches and indigestion. We all got onto the ProBiotics and within a day felt normal. They make ProBiotics for kids that taste good. Be sure to get the kind that is refrigerated.

My third thought is that western medicine has always had shortcomings in curing chronic problems. You might consider going to a Naturopath. Over the last 10 years I have gone to both a medical doctor and a Naturopath. Consistently the Naturopath is able to get to the source of my problem and heal me, where the medical doctor only prescribes medicine to deal with the symptoms. Naturopaths have to go through a rigorous program that involves all of the premed classes a medical doctor goes through, so they know human anatomy and physiology as well as any MD.

I hope this helps.

Has your pediatrician done any blood tests to rule out things? My son has RTA or Renal Tubular Acidosis. While his symptoms were not exactly like this it seems that other kids with RTA have had similar experience. If you haven't had any blood tests you might ask your Pediatrician. I doubt it's RTA but it's good to rule out things.

My son did this for a while. it was pretty scarey for me. We too had been to every type of doctor. BUT we discovered it was an enzyme difficiency. Not an allergy but it acts like one and prevents him from processing groups of food. He would lose up to five pounds and it would take a long time to gain it back. After seeing the enzyme specialist we haven't really had a problem with it. Hope that helps

Take him to see a gastroenterologist. Rocky Mountain Pediatric Gastroenterology is a good one with lots of office in the metro area and also working through Childrens Hospital. Don't let this go on without finding out what's going on!

I would definitely ask your pediatrician to refer you to a gastrointestinal pediatric specialist. They can do even more tests to rule things out and give you way more advice than your regular pediatrician can. The gastro doc we took our son to when he had some protein sensitivity issues was at this number - "Rocky Mountain Pediatric Gastroenterology" ###-###-####

hi,

you said you took him to an allergy specialist, but what about a physician? have they ruled out any illnesses associated with his symptoms? this may sound gross, but did they test for any parasites (maybe contracted through bad water or from travel, etc)? i hope things get better...my heart goes out to you and i'd be very interested in hearing a diagnosis once one is found. good luck!

A few years ago my nephew started doing the same thing and time after time the doctor said he would be fine and there was nothing they could do. Finally, we insisted they test for Giardia (Not sure on the spelling but it sounds like Gee-are-dee-a ) It is a parisite that lives in stagnant water. My nephew used to love to run his toy trucks through the excess water along the curb.

His symptoms were nausea, weight lose, but mostly the severe diarrhea.

I would ask about an Anti-parasitic if that is not what he is already on and if he is on one it could take a little time.

Hope this helps,
Tammy

Sounds very serious, don't ignore it. You are probably frustrated and disapointed with his DR.
Check this out!!! NAET Allergy elimination techniques. http://www.naet.com. My son sees Kimberly Wagstaff, RN, NAET Certified in Allergy/Pain Relief. ###-###-#### or email at ____@____.com is great and my son is no longer allergic to eggs. We are now working toward dairy, wheat, peanut butter, animal dander and molds. It's worth a little bit of your time to just call her and she is very nice and respectfull. One visit to someone in this practice could tell you exactly what is going on with your son.

My son was projectile vomitting and having other health problems. I took him to a chiroprator and we have seen AMAZING results. His spine was so out of alignment that it was affecting everything. If you're open to it, you should call Dr Tim Wann (he goes by Dr Tim) at ###-###-####. He's located in Draper and I recommend him very highly!
