Husband in Desparate Need of Work

Sounds like you've gotten great advice. Just one more idea to share. I once had no one calling me in for an interview after sending out lots of resumes, too, and it turned out that my last employer was giving out a bad reference on me. I didn't find out till one desperate place told me that they were willing to give me a chance anyway and told about the bad reference. Just something to consider. Maybe he could follow up with one of the places he applied and ask if his references were okay. I pray he gets a job really soon and one he loves!

The Texas Department of Public Safety is taking applications for their academy. Academy is in Austin so he would be away for awhile but would start making money as soon as the school started. They are able to come home on the weekends. You can get information at: http://www.txdps.state.tx.us.

Academy doesn't start until January of 2007 but applications have to be in before the end of September.

There was just a news report on the radio that DISD is looking for Policemen for its force. I would suggest acyually going down there and applying in person. Same w/ the Dallas Police Dept- making an appointment w/ someone that does the hiring and asking what it is they are looking for. American Airlines Center is always hiring for at least part time security gigs. I worked there for a year as an usher and it was great!

Wow, I can imagine how frustrating that is. My mother applied online at Walmart and Walgreens and they would never call her. When she called them she just got the runaround. Seems like those big corporations are kind of like that sometimes.

Something he may want to try in the interim, until he finds a police officer position, is either FedEx or UPS. UPS would require him to start at an entry level working the loading docks and he can work his way up to a great paying courrier position at about $25 per hour and then up to a management position, if he's there that long. FedEx doesn't pay their courriers as well as UPS, but FedEx won't require him to begin on the docks...he can go straight into a courrier position. This he can do while he continues to look for a suitable police officer position.

Search everywhere the dallas morning news, monster.com, careerbuilder.com, yahoo/hotjobs, temp. agencies, workintexas.com, post up your resume on all these sites, it allows the employers to see it. I would even put a little summary to explain your situation on a cover letter or something. I hope this helps. Let me know.

From someone who's been in the job market a lot myself...I know how difficult this is! I've been looking for a job since last October, and my top advice is MAKE FOLLOW-UP CALLS! Don't wait for employers to call you. They receive hundreds, sometimes thousands of resumes/applications. Tell your husband to look up the main phone number of a company after he submits an application. Call there and ask for human resources. He'll probably get a general voice mail box...LEAVE A MESSAGE! The first time I did this, I thought it was such a long shot, but it worked! The only responses I received to my applications were places I called myself. Don't be discouraged...he'll probably get calls back from maybe 1 out of 8 or 10 companies he calls. Also, it might take a long time. Sometimes up to a month before they call back.

Other advice:
Continue networking like you're doing here on MamaSource. Everyone you meet, mention you're looking for a job, and be as specific as possible with what type of job. Some employers are put off by people who don't know what they want.

Resources & advice on Monster.com:
Monster.com has a great resource center with a good blog. You can post messages and network with other job hunters. Talking to others in the same situation helps you keep your confidence up, which is hugely important thru this process. There are also sample interview questions, sample letters, etc... I've found Monster.com to be huge and cumbersome with their job postings, and I haven't gotten response from employers when I submit to jobs there. Probably because there are SO many responders from that board. But, their resources really are helpful.

Keep your chin up YOURSELF too. I'm sure you have a lot of stress yourself being the one employed. Try to be as supportive as possible with a positive attitude. My husband has taken this approach with me, it really has empowered me with a better sense of confidence that I can find and keep a job. I'm a big believer that things happen for a reason, and your family will wind up better than before once this process is done!
