How Old Was Your Child When He/she Went down to 1 Nap per Day?

My son just turned 1 year old. He usually takes 2 naps a day - one in the morning and one in the afternoon. It's pretty important to me that he takes both naps because I work at home and during his naptimes is when I get most of my work done. It's pretty hard to get much work done when he is awake for obvious reasons. Lately, though, he really fights me on that second nap. About half the time he takes it and half the time he doesn't. I can tell he is tired, but nothing I do puts him to sleep. So, how old was your child when they stopped taking 2 naps a day? I am hoping I have a little longer before he quits the second nap.

What can I do next?

12 months. He went from a morning and afternoon nap, down to a long afternoon nap. I kept him awake in the morning and gave him lunch a little earlier, then put him down for a nap. He was sleeping the same amount of time, just with one instead of two. You just need the same amount of time, correct? If I were you, I would skip the morning nap and put him down around lunchtime. You will likely get the same amount of sleeping time from him, but just in one nap.

She was around one when she stopped the morning nap. I think it was 2 weeks before or after her first birthday. If I recall correctly, my oldest daughter was around 14 months when she cut out the morning nap.

My daughter gave up her 2nd nap at about 20 - 21 months. She just turned 2 and takes her nap at about 1:00pm everyday and she usually only averages about 1 1/2hrs per nap but she sleeps amazingly well at night (knock on wood) and will sleep for 11 - 11 1/2 hrs each night straight through so that might have something to do with only needing one small nap a day
Good Luck

My son was about 15 or 18 months when his dropped to 1. Then about 2-3 months later is when the fights came in for just the one nap.

On his successful nap days he'll sleep the same amount in one nap as he did two naps though. So really I haven't lost anything.

My nephew stopped all naps shortly after one and has been fine that way since. Mine is an absolute raw nerve without the naps. :(

I know you have a ton of responses already, but we just went thru this too. We have 2 year old twins. We dropped to one nap a day, but we still have "rest" time for an hour around 11. That is when I put them in their cribs with books and there leap pads or leap frog teddy bear. They end up passing out for about a half hour, or they just sit in there for quiet time for about 45 mins. Either way, they know they can get up if they want, but mom needs to get work done. Hope this helps. I think it's good for them to understand play time and quiet time.

Baby #1 went from two naps to one at age 10 months and dropped all naps at age 2. She is now 4 and takes the occasional nap if going through a growth spurt or had a very long day (or a long car trip).

Baby #2 went from two naps to one at age 17 - 18 months. She is now 20 months.

It was a natural transition for both kiddos. If he needs some down time, incooperate some quiet time by either having him spend some time in his crib, give him some books to read, and/or let him watch a quiet show.

Good luck mama. And remember when you get used to his schedule, he will change it on you!!! :)

typically, in a daycare, the morning nap is dropped btwn 18-24 months. At age 2, the child is moved into the next room. Rarely, do I do it before 18 months.....

If your son is fighting you on naptime, get him outside more often....that's what he needs to tire himself! Or join a kiddie club where he can learn to socialize...that will also give him the energy release he needs!

At around 8 months our son went to one long nap in the afternoon- around 2.5 hours. He is 1 year now and will occasionally need a short nap in the morning as well- but not that often.

About 18 months with both my kiddos of whom are under the age of five and both still need one nap. Our kids are also high energy and never seem to slow down. Every kid is different and how much they sleep at night as well as how long they are sleeping at that first nap could be affecting his afternoon nap. I know my son could sleep up tp three hours at his morning nap and it would throw off his afternoon nap. Look at how much he is sleeping at night as well as during his am nap and maybe alter how long you are letting him sleep. That might help. Good luck to you . . . frustrating I know, especially when you are trying to get something done :)

Baby #3 NEVER took 2 naps a day...only 1 that lasted maybe 45 minutes.

Baby #1 dropped the morning nap by 1 year.

Baby #2 combined the morning nap with the afternoon around a year old and slept for a good 2-3 hours every afternoon until he was about 3. That was heaven.

I'm not sure you can force a nap time that the baby has simply outgrown. It sounds like you need it more than the baby. So, time to start loading up on quiet toys and educational videos for the morning.

My daughter still takes naps occasionally at 8 years old. My 5 year old son however dropped all naps by age 1. It was a literal fight to get him to take naps after that age.

My son was about 13 or 14 months old when we offically switched, but this is how it started :0) I was also worried about this change, but in the end it was much better for both of us because we went from having 2 short naps (probably about 45 min each) and fighting for that afternoon nap, to having 1 solid 2 hour nap in the middle of the day. Makes running errands and stuff much easier too because you are not as tied down by the nap schedule!

All kids in child care are down to one nap per day by the time they have their first birthday. Because when they transition up to the toddler room they only have one nap per day and do not allow the kids to lay down any other time.

That said, your child is old enough to do one nap per day. If you need to get stuff done he could be in a play area with gates up to keep him contained, or he could be in a pack and play with some toys, there are lots of ways to let kids entertain themselves for a bit so you can do some work. Especially now that he is getting older. In another year or so he'll be off playing in his room with his toys and you will see him when he gets hungry....lol.

Good luck with the working at home too.

At about a year our daughter dropped that morning nap and 1 nap in the afternoon was enough.

She woke up at about 7:00, Napped at about 12 till 2:00 to 2:30 and then we started bath and bed at 7:00..

She had been walking since 6 months so she was very active during the day. It helped her sleep all through the night.
