How Often Kids Visit Optometrist

If they seem to be doing fine and the pediatrician doesn't see any issues I'd say don't go at all. I never saw an eye doc until I was an adult. I had extremely good vision though.

If it is not costly too you then why not go ahead and go though. We have a medical plan that pays for screening very well and it costs us VERY little.

I work at lenscrafters and I would say take your child every year. I would talk to the doctor and see what their thoughts are. I know you really should not wait more than two years to have a eye visit. I think it is important to stay on top of the health of your eyes. It sounds like you are on the right track. I also know some insurances only pay every two years.

once a year I have horrible eyes and my optometrist feels that part of the reason they are as bad as what they are is because my eye problem was not caught early enough. My oldest is 8 and just started wearing glasses last winter and he has always been able to read the eye chart at the pediatrician's office so I would not go by that alone. Eyes are something that I will not mess around with.
Some health insurance will cover eye exams once a year for a child and every two years for an adult unless your optometrist says differently. My eyes are so bad I have to go once a year and my optometrist got the insurance to cover it.

i didn't push it with my daughter (didn't even have her on insurance) until she started school. I started taking her anually when she turned 5

If there are no problems, yearly visits are plenty. You could even go every other year.

My daughter didn't pass the vision test at the ped's office when she was 7. So we took her to the optometrist and she needed glasses, she goes once a year to update her prescription, she will be 9 yo in December.

I take my daughter every year but she has glasses. I don't take my other daughter because she doesn't have problems seeing and has passed all of her vision tests at her well checkup with her Ped. and when they do screenings at school.

My 9 year old twins have never been but when they had doctor check ups they test their vision there with the old fashioned eye chart on the wall...

My optometrist says every 2 years if their eyes are good. I would at least check before they start school :)

Do they go for yearly checkups with a pediatrician? My daughter is 4 1/2 too and she has not been to an optometrist yet. At her 4 year checkup with her pediatrician, they had her read a kid's eye chart. Not sure if they will do this yearly or not, but it might be good enough for them to check it at the pediatrician once a year if they are already there for a checkup.

I probably do need to take my daughter to an optometrist yearly though. I have had glasses since the 2nd grade (and my eyes are badly nearsighted) and my husband had a lazy eye as a child (had surgery for it). He now wears glasses as well. So it's more likely that our daughter may have some trouble.

My kids go once a year. I started taking my oldest when she was 3 because she new her alphabet and could sit still and listen to the doctor.

I went to the pediatric opthamologist once a year once I started wearing glasses. Prior to that, I just did the eye chart at my yearly physical with my doctor.

I haven't taken my son, as yet, because he's passed every vision test at the ped's office.

I have a strong preference for opthamologists over optometrists because a) so much more is done (testing wise), and b) they are capable of doing so much more (care wise) than optometrists.

I wear glasses so I and my kids go yearly. My insurance covers it in full and it wont hurt your kids to have their eyes checked.
