so im 5'4'' and started my pregnancy at about 112 lbs. first pregnancy. my doc has told me several times that i am gaining too much weight. at the moment i am at about 140 lbs(about 28 lbs more than my original weight) and at either 28 weeks or 32 weeks depending on which due date you go by. original was june 3rd, doctor later changed it to june 20th coz my baby boy looked too small for a june 3rd due date. the only places i look big are my chest and belly. you cant even tell im pregnant from behind. my chest has gone from my original size at 34b to what it is now at 38d. everything has gone fine, no complications. i eat healthy and do excercise. i cant eat greasy foods or junk/fast food much coz of the stomach ulcer ive had for 4 years. someone help???

What can I do next?

You sound like you've gained about right. As long as you're not eating junk, exercise and don't over indulge don't worry.

Don't worry about it. I've known friends and relatives who have gained anywhere from 20-70 lbs. and all of them have had healthy babies and most lost most or all of the weight after. Just eat healthy, get some exercise and look forward to meeting your new baby! Congratulations and good luck with everything!

With my first baby, I'm not sure how much I gained - I had gained around 30 pounds at week 30, and after that I told them I didn't want to know. My doctor never once told me I was gaining too much or too fast. Weight is a sensitive issue for me, and I would have been mortified if she'd told me I had a problem. Throughout that pregnancy, I walked 3 miles 5 days a week and tried to eat relatively healthily.

With my second, I exercised occasionally, but not regularly, and ate basically whatever I wanted, and only gained about 25 pounds.

I'm now 33 weeks pregnant with my third, and I've gained about 25 pounds - I think. I hate scales and try not to look (even when I'm not pregnant), but my nurse accidentally mentioned it a couple of weeks ago. Other than chasing after my older kids, I literally haven't exercised a bit, and again, I've been eating whatever I'm in the mood for.

My point is, the body seems to gain what it wants/needs to gain, regardless of what you're doing. Personally, I think your doctor was a bit out of line to say you've gained too much.

If you're planning to breastfeed, you'll probably lose most of the weight pretty quickly anyway, especially since you started out very small. My body wasn't proportioned quite the same way after I lost the weight, but I did get back to the same weight I'd been before.

Just continue to try to eat well, and don't worry about it. I've heard anything from 15-35 lbs is normal, depending on your initial weight (and since it sounds like you were slim, gaining more weight is probably fine). Gaining too much can make it a bit harder on you (both to lose the weight, and to have the baby, if the baby is big), but really, you should both be fine. Our moms were told to gain as much as they wanted: my mom gained 50 lbs with me, and I weighed in at over 8 lbs, but she was able to lose the weight later and I was fine.

Hi A.,

I, too, was similar to your situation. I'm 5'6", and was about 110lbs with my first pregnancy. I gained weight really fast, and ended up gaining over 40 lbs by the end of my pregnancy. My chest and belly were all that grew and people couldn't tell I was pregnant from behind either, but towards the end when it got hotter, my legs got more swollen. So I'd suggest you keep them relaxed in a cooler environment. I had a healthy, non-complicated pregnancy. The only thing my midwife was worried about was that the baby was going to be too big because I have a small frame. She said those who are closer to being underweight tend to gain more than the typical pregnant woman. If you're worried about the weight gain after your pregnancy, I'd highly recommend breast feeding. After several weeks of breast feeding, I was close to getting back to my original weight, though I need to keep watching what I ate since my baby boy was also consuming the food too. Anyway, if your doctor isn't concerned, I wouldn't be concerned either. Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy!

I agree with all the other posts. As long as there's no sign of any pregnancy-related health issues (pregnancy diabetes, high blood pressure, etc.) then don't worry about it too much. I am 5'6" and was about 127 lbs. before babies. I gained about 32 lbs. with my first, 50 lbs. with my second and 40 lbs. with my third. I had no health issues during pregnancy and my children are completely healthy.

The only caution to you is to not expect that you will get back to your pre-pregnancy weight very quickly. The more weight you gain, the more likely it will take longer to drop the weight. So don't be too frustrated after the fact. I found that it took at least a year . . . in direct correlation to my children becoming very active so I guess chasing them around is like exercise! My weight now sits at about 132 lbs. -- I could never seem to get rid of that final 5 lbs.

I gained 40 pounds with both my pregnancies. I worked out and ate healthy and all the things you are supposed to do. I still gained 1 pound a week every single week.

If you are doing what you should be and you're still gaining "too much" weight, your body has it's reasons. Doctors don't know everything and everyone's body reacts differently. If you are healthy and the baby is healthy, then I wouldn't read too much into it.

They generally say 25 lbs for the entire pregnancy. However, heavier people should gain less and leaner people can get a way with more. As the prgenancy progresses, you will gain more, more quickly so they ususally start to pay more attention to that later in the pregnancy. I wouldnt worry about it, just make healthy choices for your baby.

Are you kidding me? 112 is very lean for 5'4", and you can afford to gain a little more. You sound perfect to me!!! If you are eating healthy and not too much sugar, and plenty of healthy fats, then your body will do exactly what it needs to. Trust your body! Your weight gain is not extreme. Just be healthy and you will be fine! I don't get doctors like that.

Congratulations on your upcoming baby and for looking like a model at the same time! Hooray you! :)
