Horrible Diaper Rash - Red Lodge,MT

My oldest had a blistering, weeping rash prior to his first birthday. I didn't take him to the doctor but this is how I treated it---oatmeal baths every time he had a bowel movement, zinc oxide ointment (dries and treats) rather than other ointments (preventative), motrin, and running around diaperless---the diaperless part, if he can be confined in an easy to clean area all the better, but getting air to his bottom will help the most.

My daughter used to get that too. I would just try and let it dry out by having her not where a diaper for few hours. We did have some accidents but it seemed to work.

Poor little guy! You may want to have him checked out by his pediatrician. He may have a yeast infection. That happened to my older son when he was a baby and I was surprised because I wasn't aware that boys could get them. He was prescribed a topical ointment and it was gone in a matter of days.

we use "resinol" for rash you can get it from the pharmacy dept. some have it on hand some have to order it for you. But it is an over the counter med. It does work real well

yes, i think you should take him by the pediatrician's office for a quick look - can't hurt.

my 2.5 year old has a diaper rash due to the fact that the other day she ate an entire orange and a half at lunch time, and then at dinner she ate a lot of pineapple - both are very acidic, and as a result she got quite a diaper rash. not oozing or anything, but burned her skin when she pooped and was quite sore for a few days.

the acidic foods thing is something to watch... especially if your 2 year old enjoys those foods (tomatoes, oranges, green beans, pineapple, juices, etc.)

Our dr had us get something over the counter for my son, but I can't remember what it's called. I'll try to remember to take a look when I get home in case that is what your son has... or I'm sure you could call your dr's office and find out without taking him in. If it doesn't clear up soon though, I'd take him in.

I didn't read the whold article before I submitted it, but it lists the anti-yeast ointments in it. Nystatin, clotrimazole, or miconazole. Good luck!

I am a big fan of balmex & penaten for diaper rash cream... or bag balm if it gets really bad.

but the best thing is a little air... I agree with earlier posters about letting him air out with each diaper change (and change more frequently too). if ou don't have time to air him out, try using a hair dryer (on cool, not hot). if you make sure his bum is really dry before you put on some cream it will really help.

I learned that trick from a kid's mom I used to babyit... her poor son used to get diaper rash something awful... his hind end looked raw like hamburger almost.

If there is oozing I would take him in to make sure it isn't an infecton. Impetigo can be from infection.
If it is just a diaper rash, go get Aqua Phor, Maalox and mix equal parts, put in microwave just for a few seconds to mix it together, stir it up, let cool and apply liberally! Apply each diaper change.
It is a life saver, my Pediatrician told me this trick when my babies were little as my daughter would get it bad.
The Maalox takes the burn out of the rash and keeps it less painful with bowel movements, the aquaphor protects and heals the skin. Combined it is is a life saver. You can store it in a small container if you made a lot and keep using it over and over. Especially if my kids had loose stools this was a great thing to have.

Let your little man run around for 5 - 10 minutes diaperless at each changing. Yes, there may be accidents, but if it is a diaper rash, you should start to see an improvement within a day or 2. At my house, after tubbie time, we have nekkid bum time where she gets to run around for about half an hour with nothing on. Lets the air get to her little bum and honestly, it IS the best thing.

If it persists after a few days (2 or 3) then get in touch with your doc. But, give the air a chance!
