We have just recently removed our 4yr old and our 8yr old from their school for a multitude of reasons. This was a hard decision being the end of the year but felt it the best for out boys. Does anyone know how I can plug into the homeschool network here in Charlotte NC? I would like to finish the year here at home. In addition does anyone recommend a private Christian school here in Charlotte NC?

What can I do next?

There are MANY groups in NC to get involved with so that your boys will have so much to do (fun and educational and social). Contact NCHE www.nche.com and you should be able to track down the Mecklenburg County group. There are some fees associated if I recall and sometimes they request parents to get involved or organize and activity once a year. There is an annual book fair at Calvary Baptist Church on Rea Road too.

(I grew up homeschooling in Charlotte)

Hi L.,

I homeschool my 2 boys and there are a lot of homeschool groups in the Charlotte area. Some are purely social, others deal with one type of teaching, others are religion based. You can be a member of more than one. Someone mentioned www.nche.com (NC home education) and that is a good place to start. At www.hslda.org, you can look up the requirements needed to home school. NC has laws and requirements for homeschooling. Since you have already pulled your 8 year old, you need to look into it quickly. You are required to register your school if you have a child 7 or older and you are required to do some testing.

I grew up in the MACS (Meck Area Catholic Schools) system and was very pleased with the education I got. There are a lot of good private schools but some of them can be very expensive (although I don't know if that's a problem) and have long waiting lists.

Good luck!!

I think I recall that St. Gabriel's was a good school.

I'm not sure whether to offer sympathy for obviously having a bad experience at other schools, or to congratulate you for making the decision to homeschool! Maybe both?

Thanks to those of you who sent links to more info. I'm considering pulling my two (9 & 11) out of public school, too, but do want to explore the support network first. I'm in the NW - Mt. Island/Coulwood area , and there is a cute little educational supply store that seems to serve mainly homeschoolers. Nice bunch of folks. If you want to check it out: Growing Scholars, 8906 Bellhaven Blvd 28214. They told me about the SALT and WINGS groups, both of which I believe are Christian homeschooling groups.

I wish you luck and joy as you homeschool!

Check out CHEA (Charlotte Home Educators Association) for a list of local support groups. They are organized loosely by zip code. Some are larger, and might offer more opportunities than others. Be patient. It took me a couple of months to hear from the one I joined mid-year (HINTS).

The website is www.cheaonline.com.

Good luck!

Hi L.! Welcome to Charlotte! I don't know much about home schooling but I do know a GREAT Christian school. Hickory Grove Baptist. We are members there and Dr Henry Ward runs our school and just does an awesome job!!! You might want to check it out. Northside Christian Academy also has a good school and they are in Charlotte as well.
Take care!
