Hi moms! Please help. For the past week I have had a lot of pain in my right buttox and it shoots down to my leg. I am 25 weeks pregnant. I would just like some advice on stretches I could try to help with it. I am not really interested in taking anything for it. The pain is there all day even when I wake up in the morning. With my first pregnancy I had it on my left side and it would go away after rest but this pain doesn't seem to go away. I also am not able to go to a chiropractor as my insurance doesn't cover it.

Thanks for any help!

What can I do next?

Hi J.!

While I am no doctor I am going to give an educated guess that this is sciatica pain. Google it and see if that explains it better.

What I do for mine is lay on a tennis ball right on the spot in my bottom that hurts. It does hurt a little bit and as the pain goes away I will put more and more weight onto it. It fatigues the muscle and eventually will eliminate the pain running down your leg. I learned this technique during a year in physical therapy for an injury I had.

Another option although not sure how you would get in a good position is to have your hubby gently "Elbow" the spot and go in small circles and gradually increase the pressure. I do this for my hubby and a few friends when they have the sciatica pain.

I wish you lots of luck and hope you feel better soon! Blessings to you and yours!

I just went through physical therapy for almost the same thing - pain in my left buttocks and shooting.... My S.I. joint was stuck and caused a lot of pain. My treatment involved deep heat or hot bath for at least 10 - 15 minutes (daily) followed by all kinds of exercises and stretches that they gave me to do, three times a week. If you are trying this on your own, try the heat so long as it doesn't aggravate the condition. Then do a couple side stretches and hold them for 30 seconds each/two sets. Don't overdue anything since you are pregnant, your joints have already loosened up a bit.

This has good stretches....

This website talks about the S.I. joint and you can see if this pertains to what you are experiencing.

Definitely talk to your dr. and let her know what you are experiencing. Good luck.

I agree with other posts ask you dr for PT referral. Also many PT are in Chiro offices and they will work with you and insurance!! A Chiro will DEFINTATELY help!! Most Chiropractors relaly want to help you so seek one out explain your insurance and let them see what they can do.

You could ask your OB/GYN for a referral to a physical therapist who can assess you and make specific recommendations for stretching, strengthening and/or use of a support. When we are pregnant, the laxity, or looseness, in our ligaments sometimes leads to nerve pain, since everything shifts around a bit! Make sure you go to a P.T. who has experience in working with pregnant women, since not all therapists have this training. Ask when you call each clinic or check their website. Perhaps your OB/GYN could recommend someone they have used in the past. I have a great women's health P.T. I have seen in the Naperville area, if that is not too far from you?

Definitely sciatica. My husband had some physical therapy exercises he did for it, but I don't know if they would be the same for a pregnant woman. There should be information online, too. It's very common - ask your OB if they have any suggestions. They may have a sheet of stretches/exercises you can do. Alternating heat and ice packs may help, too. My husband used to massage that area for me when I was pregnant (it wasn't as bad as yours sounds, though.)

Hi J.,

just a short remark, if you intend to heat the area, don't take a too hot a bath as it could be bad for the baby (overheating). Rather apply heat locally.
Good luck and get well soon.

Many great suggestions. I am a PT who works with pregnant women and have found many get relief manual therapy which includes massage and gentle stretching, as well as home exercises, SI belts (if there is a rotation) and kinesiotape (which your husband could learn how to apply). Ask your dr. for a referral to a PT. If you are in the West Suburbs, I am at NapervillePT.com.. Good luck.

Yes, sounds like sciatica. You can apply some heat to loosen the muscle around the nerve that it is compressing and massage it with a tennis ball. In yoga you can try to do the pigeon stretch, or the figure 4 stretch, and don't forget to stretch out the muscles in the front of your hips, sometimes we stretch the hurt area, and we need to stretch the opposite muscles to help loosen it up. Sometimes you may have to wait for the baby to shift positions. Tell them to move on over. :)

Good Luck!
