I have been using cloth diapers (fuzzi bunz) and i love them. EXCEPT...they smell soooooooooooooooooo bad after pee has soaked in them. i have 2 other friends who are dealing with this same issue. i actually thought i had figured it all out. my method was:
1. wash diapers and inserts in hot water (i also tried cold)
2. do another rinse with detergent (allens all natural) and bac-out (by bio-kleen)
3. and then a last rinse with nothing but water to get any leftover suds out. because what i have heard is left over detergent is the culprit. i also have hard water and have tried borax which seems to do nothing.
i also often sun dry them but not always. that helps but there is still a smell left over. the smell appears after my son has wet his diaper. i am at a loss and frustrated. does anyone have a solution?? enlighten me please!!
Soak them in diluted white vinegar. To give you the idea of how much vinegar it would be about a cup for a kitchen sink full. Let them soak before washing for a couple of hours, then wash as normal. It should work.

I had the same problem, a slight change in wash routine solved it. Toss the diapers into the machine and do a cold water rinse. Wash in warm water with 1/2 the usual amount of liquid detergent and a scoop of baking soda, fill the fabric softner cup with vinegar (or a downy ball if your machine doesn't have one). Try soaking them in a baking soda and water solution after rinsing them and then put some baking soda in the washer with them. I have found that it removes all kinds of odors just as well, if not better, than bio-kleens's bac-out. I use it in the wash when I wash my towels also as they sometimes smell stale.

Have you tried checking out the forum at www.diaperswappers.com? There are a ton of ideas from cloth diaperers there! I'm about to try a stripping method for my microfiber inserts - running them thru the dishwasher (no soap) because it heats the water to a higher temp than the washer can. I hate that smell! Blech! My Dh was helping with laundry and accidentally ran a load of rinsed but unwashed diapers through the dryer and put them away in the diaper bin, and when I put one on dd - eeeewww! In a pinch like that, I have used Odo-Ban (from Sam's Club)to deodorize. I think it's kinda h*** o* the fabric, but I'd rather wear the diaper out using it successfully than have it stink so bad we can't use it.
