Hi
I need some help. I have a 5 and a half month old who last week popped a bottom tooth then 2 days ago the other came through. He won't eat (hardly) and he is fussy during the day but at night he just screams and screams and will not sleep. If he does fall asleep he jolts himself awake and screams some more. I give him motrin and it does not help too much as well as tylonal. I have tried Oragel. He freaks out when I put it on his gums and then throws up from crying so hard. He does not like teething rings and I have tried the Hylands teething tabs. NOTHIng is working. I feel very bad for him because he is not sleeping ot eating (it seems like it hurts his gums when the bottle goes in his mouth). He has also had a low grade fever, lots of gas (from crying probably) and boughts of diarreah. Has anyone had an experience this bad before while teething? My daughter was a cake walk compared to this. Could it be something else? I just do not know what to do....please help. Thanks

What can I do next?

I've heard Oragel can be very dangerous. Have you tried giving him Motrin? It last longer than Tylenol.

I would definitely get him checked out by the doctor just to make sure there's not something else going on. My son is 18 months old and also overreacts when he's teething, but he seems to find relief with Tylenol and Hylands and even the Orajel, temporarily. I'd say if at least one of those isn't working, then there's a good chance something else going on.

P.S. I also found that Motrin upset my son's tummy... maybe that was contributing to the throwing up?

I remember "those nights". My now 15 year old girl gave me a few of those nights. I found that the ADULT orajel worked best. And, please don't think negative of me, but, we did the ol' fashion ..........dab of Cognac. JUST A DAB ! It worked !!

Couple ideas, have you tried the Hylands teething gel? My first son did great with the gel, but the teething tablets did nothing. The 2nd son did great with the tablets but hated the gel. Try the gel and see if that works better for you. Also this won't help at night but during the day my 2 loved chewing on a toothbrush. My husband took it one step further and got one of the small kids electric toothbrushes and use to massage the gums when they got fussy. Worked great, got to the point that they would hold the toothbrush by themselves in their mouth. Just keep trying different things he will find something that he likes and makes him feel better. You may also want to double check with the doctor to see if they have any insights. Good luck

K....at about 5 1/2 months one of my twins went through a HUGE screaming fit and it probably lasted two weeks. He didnt cut any teeth until 6 1/2 months though. One thing he loves is I got one of those mesh things that you can put fruit in and I put ice in it and let him hold it and suck on it. He also loves his tooth brush...one of the infant ones you put on your finger. I also have tons of things for him to chew on...he doesnt like teething rings, but loves the plastic top of the gerber baby food container. Go figure. He might be crying because of gas...it seems teething messes with their little tummies as well. All you can do is try to get the gas out. I remember at the height of this phase my son screamed one morning for 5 hours straight...I about went crazy. Just keep offering him all kinds of things, try some ice (Ive also heard frozen wash clothes work well too), try some of the gels out there and just pray it passes soon and he can get back to sleeping good.

Hi K., there's a few things you can do, for some reason it seems like the pain is worse at night, my 3 were the same way, what I did was I took the tylenol and I rubbed it directly onto the gums, like you the oragel made my first baby scream when I put it on, so I tried it on my own gums and it burned, so I just used the tylenol on the gums and it worked, also I kept a spoon in the freezer and I would massage their gums with it, but what worked the best, and my babies like the best was crushed ice in a clean wash cloth tied with a rubber band and I used to just let them chew and suck on it, it pacifide them as well, as it melted yeah they got wet, but right now as hot as it is. On top of those things I just did a lot of holding rocking and nurturing. I hope this helps. J.

**with the symptoms he has- not eating, difficulty eating/drinking, diarrhea, fever- you best make sure he is NOT getting dehydrated. Dehydration in babies is/can be dangerous.

And, if he is not able to eat/drink appropriately.. .he may be hungry too.

Take him to the Doctor to make sure he is not suffering from something else or a virus bug etc.

Sometimes, babies wake like that when they have gas... what worked for us is the "Hyland's Colic Tabs" (no, it's not just for colic, but for ANY stomach/digestive problems, and gas problems). It helps to calm them, help them to sleep as well if they have gas and/or digestive problems. Our daughter had bad bouts of gas as a baby. You can find it on Amazon or any natural food store.

The "Oragel" gels for teething... basically "numbs" the gums...AND the throat/tongue too....making it hard for them to swallow etc. My Pediatrician does not like the numbing gels for this reason.

If nothing you tried is working... then perhaps he is sick or something... ?

If teething, for our kids, what they liked is to chew on dampened and frozen wash cloths.

ALSO, you may want to check his mouth for "Thrush." It will appear as white patches in the mouth.... this can also cause pain in the mouth and difficulty feeding/nursing.

I would just take him to the doctor... for an exam.

oh wow your poor baby! what i did and what my babies dr reccamended was tylenol every 4 hours as needed for like a week then start to decease the amount to like every 6 hours. also what was a life saver for my daughter was the gentle naturals teething drops! you only give them every 2 hours and it was such a blessing and still is (shes getting 4 molars in right now!). if the tylenol doesnt work try motrin. i actually had to do both motrin and tylenol with my daughter (which her pedi. okayed). i would reccamened to help him eat to used the teething drops 20mins before eating so his mouth is numb. also put a teething ring in the frig so it gets cold, or give him a damp cool wash ragto chew on. my daughter was just like your son is. just push fluids a lot if he doesnt want to eat a whole bottle then feed him like 2oz insteand of 4 (cut what he eats in 1/2) and feed him more ofeten. this will pass he may be getting more teeth in check his top gums. good luck i hope this helps!
