Help! My Son Is Peeing EVERYWHERE

Updated on December 20, 2010

My son is 23 months old and constantly takes off his pants and diaper and pees wherever he wants. I tried introducing the potty to him about a month ago and the potty is in plain site always. When I see him peeing on the floor, I take him right to the potty but he still doesnt get it. He pees everywhere and I am tired of scrubbing the carpet. Any suggestions?

What can I do next?

I bet he's fascinated by being able to do that! sorry it sounds kinda cute and funny. Maybe if you think he's ready, take him to the potty every 20 or so minutes. put something in it and tell him to aim for it? or if he isnt ready put the diaper on backwards. maybe some duct tape! (joking, i think...)

get him a stool and let him pee standing up so he can watch it for some reason little boys seem to fascinated with this. Get on a potty schedule. I used to set the timer and tell my son (about 23 months when we started) that when it beeped it was time to try the potty again. Don't ask because the answer will always be "no"
Neither of my boys ever sat on the potty to pee they always stood.

omg soo funny. I remember those days well. Why don't you try taking him to potty every hour or two and in between put real hard to undo clothes on him. I used to use overalls. Sometimes when my boys were being really crazy and could take off their clothes i put them on tight and backwards so they couldn't get them off without a lot of work. And you would hear that cause they get frustrated trying. It can be sooo funny to watch sometimes.

Try one of these:

1) onesies...it keeps them from taking their diaper off
2) training pants or cloth diapers. I swear as soon as my daughter got into cloth diapers she couldn't wait to be potty trained (she could feel when she was wet)
3) stop potty training for now. They know when they are ready. We forced it several times and paid for it in patience. 25 months old and she was trained.

If he (or you) is not ready to commit to potty training right now then try putting diapers on backwards (and/or with duct tape) then a onsie and overalls or other one piece garment. My daughter is also 23 months and has peed in the potty all of twice, probably by accident. I got her one because she sees her older brother using the potty and wants to copy. I only put her on before baths or if she is getting changed.

If the potty is always in plain sight, that leads me to believe you're not keeping it in the bathroom. People go to the bathroom in the bathroom. He is too young to understand if the potty is in the kitchen or family room that you don't go to the bathroom in those rooms. I also am of the belief that if a child isn't going to be brought to the potty consistently through every day, every hour or two, don't bother with it. Who needs a kid that occasionally pees on the potty but uses their diaper the rest of the time and then pees on the carpet too? I would suggest doing serious training - potty in the bathroom, thick cloth training pants with waterproof outer pants, taking him every hour or two without asking if he has to or wants to, no rewards. Or else, put away the potty for 6 months, keep him diapered and in overalls (backward if need be). He's also old enough to introduce a one minute time out in the time out chair for peeing on the floor.

I would back off for a few weeks then retry he isn't getting it because he isn't understanding what the potty is used for.He is almost 2 my daughter is 21 months dad over the weekend thought it was a good idea to bring down the potty chair so I did (imaging that maybe she'll sit right on it go potty & we'll be free of diapers HA HA HA) Having to train 2 other kids I had to back off for a while sometimes more than twice they weren't ready,I don't care what anyone says you can't "force"a child to pee/poop on command. So my son being potty trained by 21/2 my daughter was 3 in process with my 21 month old only following her signs if she wants her clothes off to sit fine by me give it a try while explaing to her what the potty is for right now she thinks it's a new toy.
