I got such great responses last time I posted. I have a breastfed baby who is a gourmet! Any ideas, specifically brands/types of nipples/bottles people have had success with. Basically we introduced the bottle at 4 weeks (Breastflow by the First Years) and she sucked it right down. I waited a week before I gave it to her again and since then it's been a real struggle. She HAS taken it a few times (from me and her Dad) but I can count the number of times on one hand. I'm going back to work (part-time) next week and I'm really worried about that first day. I know she won't starve to death but it's not going to be pretty. We've tried various people giving it to her when I'm not around, etc. I'm only working a few shifts a month but they are LONG (12 hours). I've also tried Dr. Brown's natural flow but she just gags and chokes on the nipple and nothing goes down. Help!
Thanks to everyone who took the time to respond to my request! I went back last Monday and I have to say, it was kind of a nightmare. I ended up actually having to leave work to come home and feed her after 6 hours. She had been screaming non-stop for 3 of those hours. I'm negotiating with my work to try and work shorter shifts and/or extend my maternity leave. I never thought it would be this hard to leave my baby to go back to work but breastfeeding has made me very attached to her and her to me! I tried the playtex drop-ins bottle and the Adiri breast bottle I had already tried. Anyway, thanks again everyone!
Just today I received a bottle from a friend that looks and feels just like a brest. The brand is Adiri. They are pricey I believe, but worth it I hear! Thye can be ordered online. Also I LOVE the NUK nipples. My daughter's peditrician recommended them and so far they are the only nipple she will take. Hope this helps a bit...
I went back to work when my son was 6 weeks old. I pumped at work and people gave him bottles throughout the day. The Soothie brand worked great for us! They also have corresponding pacifiers, so the nipple shape was something he was already used to sucking on. When people would give him the bottle, the only problem I ever had was if they didn't stick the nipple in far enough. If they just "teased" him with it, he didn't drink. But if they put it all the way in, and touched the roof of his mouth with it, he was fine.
As other posters have said, make sure to check the flow. That makes a really big difference!

I went back to work 2 days a week last November. My little guy was not too thrilled about bottles, but once he figured out that it was either be hungry or take a bottle he would eat. Sometimes he will hold out in hopes that I will be along soon, but overall he has adjusted. Whatever nipple you choose, make sure it is slowflowing. Breastfed babies have to work to get milk out of breasts and it can cause coughing/sputtering to have a faster flowing bottle nipple. Best wishes!
My daughter was born Nov. 25th. We initially had success with the Avent, but then she quit and would only gag and sputter and chew on it. She'd cry for 10-20 minutes before taking it, and then wouldn't take it at all some days. I figured she'd just have to get used to it eventually, but then a pediatrician friend gave us a Playtex Drop-Ins bottle with the NaturaLatch Nipple and it worked like a charm. She loves it. It's soft, has the rough ridge around the place where her lips rest, to simmulate the texture of the breast. Bottom line, we haven't had a problem since.
? At the hospital did they give her a pacifier if so they have some bottles with the similar pacifier they are called soothers i think you might try that if she is also taking the pacifier Good Luck.
I had the same problem with my daughter. I had never tried the breastflow bottles with her but I got her to take the avent bottles and nipples occasionally. Sorry I don't know of any others because I am a SAHM and decided it was just easier to breastfeed her than spend all the money on trying different bottles and all.
We had the same problem and ended up giving up. I just had to wait until my sons were taking sippy cups before I could be away. I think you just have to keep working at it until she caves.
My daughter took only to the Dr. Brown bottles. Did you happen to check what level the nipple was? Because that made a world of difference when it came to "messiness". She took level one until she was almost one year old because level 2 ran out too quick for her. My daughter did not like the evenflo bottles because she could not get enough out of them to satisfy her. Good luck!
I am a first time mom also but I was a nanny for 7 years prior. And I have found with most of the breastfeeding babies I use to babysit as well as my own son that the Playtex Drop-ins have worked the best. The nipples are bigger around like the breast and they provide a variety of nipple shapes. In addition, I know that you are purchasing bags as well but they equal out to less than $.01 per drop-in and there will never be any spoiled milk in the bottle because you throw away the bag everytime.
Maybe it isn't the bottle, it may be the scent. Let someone feed her with your shirt or blouse or fragrance on, it may be the comfort of mommie or daddy smell and not the bottle at all.....
If you can make it to the peditrician, ask them for some of the premade bottles/nipples that go with it. If you don't want baby to have formula, empty out the formula and replace it with breast milk....add the nipple from the peditrician.
My son LOVES these nipples.
Also, you can soak the nipples in breastmilk. I hear this helps.
