Hi M.,

I loved gripe water. I had to give it to my son, he was also gassy and I can tell you it didn't make a drastic difference, but I did notice he was able to sleep better and it helped to relieve some of his gassiness.

It was suggested by my lactation consultant, at the time, there was very few places you can get it besides ordering online. I got mine from the pharmacy in glen ellyn, at the corner of president and roosevelt I believe (hope I am remembering the streets correctly!). Hope that helps!

We had good luck with it, reducing reflux and discomfort (kicking and squealing) after a bottle. We like the kind you get at Fruitful Yield. The main ingredients are ginger and fennel.
I saw an episode of Food Detectives with Alton Brown where they proved that ginger is effective in reducing nausea (induced by long sessions on a carnival teapot ride) by calming contractions in the stomach and esophagus.

We just put a 1/2 teaspoon right in the bottle.

M.,

We have used it with all of our infants and thought it helped. That said, I think it's important to try to determine the source of the problem as I think it's only a temporary solution to the symptoms.

I think the Mylicon gas drops work very well also (and are probably less exensive).

We are treating gas issues in our house too. (Email me if you want to talk more. We have a 7 wk old, BF boy.)

Gripe water got me through the first 6 months of my daughters life. I usually gave it to her about a half hour before her night time feeding. It's safe to use more than that though. It really helped her.

We used gripe water after trying other things (mylicon drops, bruaer's colic relief, etc) and it worked really well. I think we used it for 3 months. We refrigerated it only to keep the ants away as it is really sticky and sweet. If you are bottle feeding it is really easy to put the dose in the bottle. If you are breastfeeding it is a little more difficult to get the baby to take the dosage from the dropper.

We've been using it for about a year and a half for our son's occasional gassiness. It works pretty quickly and helps him a lot.

We love gripe water! It was given to me as a gift from a mom friend and now I include it with all my gifts for parents to be. I like the one in a blue box, $12 at Walgreens. Our little guy was gassy too, and this really seemed to help him. Even if it wasn't a cure-all, it made us feel like we were doing something to relieve him. It took time for his little digestive system to finish developing, and at about 6 mos we noticed less gassiness. We still give him a dose occasionally to help with hiccups. Good luck!

My eldest was incredibly gassy... don't think gripe water was around then, but we used tons of mylecon drops. Turns out switching her from milk-based to soy-based formula made a huge difference for her. I was half breast-feeding, and we kept trying to take stuff out of my diet. DOH! Good luck!

I tried Gripe Water w/my son when he was about that age.
It may have been all in my head, but in my opinion, it was
the only thing that brought him relief!!
We spent hours each day in colicky misery.
He's seven now, and I still remember that out of all the new bottles, burping techniques, gas remedies, etc. that the gripe water helped. I believe it's natural and ginger-based.
Good luck.

We used gripe water when our son was very colicey. It didn't seem to have a huge effect on him though. Gas X was our life saver. It seemed to work the best for him! Oh, and we switched our bottles to Dr. Browns. They are a bit more expensive, but they did wonders for us. The next time you go to the store pick up a box of them and at least read the back, even if you do not buy them. You can also try warming the milk if you are not already!

I wish you the best of luck!

I used gripe water with my son and it worked great.

About 15 minutes after giving it to him he would start to calm down, usually resulting in a big burp!

I do know people who swear by it others who think its a joke. I think its worth a try since its natural and affordable.

There is a brand at Walgreens I recommend that doesn't have a bunch of added sugar. I just can't remember the name of it, sorry.

Anyway, good luck! I hope it works!

M.,
We get our gripe water from Walgreens (Baby Bliss). It works wonders for our gassy/colicky daughter. I tried the probiotics, Dr. Brown bottles, Mylicon, acid reflux medicine, different holds, different swings etc. I usually try to find the source of the fussiness first before resorting to the gripe water just to make sure I'm not missing something. The gripe water gives almost immediate results with a belch or the fussiness is gone. I don't even give the dose they recommend. I give 1/2 the dose and get these results. It has been extremely rare that I had to give an additional dose 1/2 hour later. Just make sure whatever brand you get does not have Bella Donna (Atropine) in it. That ingredient is addictive to the baby per my pediatrician. Good luck.

I heard about it and used it with my daughter- FAR better results than mylicon! She took it out of syringe after nursing. or I put it in her bottle with the formula. I personally had a good luck so give it a shot. One brand had to be refrigerated and one does not need to be refreigerated after opening. I always at Walgreens.

Have her start eating yogurt everyday for the cultures or give her acidophiles. You might consider a probiotic also. These all help with gas problems, the natural way.

Just a thought.

I used it with my son who had horrible reflux, gas issues. It seems to somewhat work. When you get to the point of exhaustion, you will try anything and use anything you think somewhat works. I never refridgerated mine - better go check the package.
