Does anyone have a recommendation for a good park for a family picnic? We'd like to do Father's Day outside, weather permitting. I need someplace where we can reserve a picnic table, preferably with some shade, and with a nearby playground for the kids to run around. We live in South O.P., but will drive to a really great site. Any suggestions? THANKS!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks EVERYONE for the great suggestions. I settled on Ironwoods Park in Leawood, because it was the most convenient to our Dad. It also has a shelter and playground close to the parking lot - easiest for older people to maneuver! Amazingly, it's one available shelter had not been reserved for Father's Day, so we're in. I did take a drive out to Thomas Stoll Memorial Park at 119th & Quivera, Quivera Park (across the street) and Shawnee Mission Park. I look forward to checking out the other parks, just for future family fun. Thank you everyone!

Hi S.,

I am from Lenexa but lived in Ov. Pk. before, I love the Shawnee Mission Park (79th and Renner)for that, you can find shelters with lake view or not and playground for the kids. It is beautiful and there are lots of things to do there.
We also have the Sar-Ko-Par Park there are shelters too, one is close to the playground and lake, but you can not use this lake is just for view and is small. The playground is great though.
Hope it helps and enjoy Father's Day!

Deana Rose Farm, not sure of the exact location, somewhere in OP,KS I believe (or Lenexa). It's GREAT. Message me if you'd like more info and I can ask my stepsister. She did her daughter's 3rd bday party there. It has a walking trail, animals to feed and pet, fishing, playgrounds, ponds, eating areas, etc..

If you want to reserve a shelter in OP then go to www.opkansas.org and click on Parks & Rec, they have a webpage that shows you all the shelters, what's available at the park they are located in and you can reserve them online. Also, since you are in South OP you could look into Leawood parks, www.leawood.org, they also have several very nice parks with renatable shelters.

My personal favorites are those that are listed, South Lake and Antioch. Antioch is huge and has multiple play areas and lakes and flower gardens. South Lake is a little smaller but still very nice, and not as far North.

Antioch Park is a great one! Antioch & Shawnee Mission Drive. Shawnee Mission Park is another good one, a bit west for you (87th & Ridgeview area) but they have a shelter we had our daughter's first birthday party at, that's next to a big playground/restrooms.

Let us know what you decide!

Just went to a picnic that was at Quivira Park. It is located at Quivira and 119th. Has a good size shelter with tables, playground, and volleyball/sand area. It worked out great. Restrooms were right next door. I'd check them out.

Shawnee Mission Park is great for family picnics. There are several shelters with picnic benches and playgrounds for kids. You can also get one of the shelters close to the lake. I'm not sure if they are reservable but there are usually some available.

South lake park....it is beautiful! It is just to the west of Metcalf. On 87th street. There is a playground, lake and lots of shade. Parking is minimal though.
Have a great time!

Shawnee Mission Park at 79th -n- Renner, Deanna Rose at Switzer -n- 135th, Antioch Park- just south of Shawnee Mission Parkway on Antioch. Those are all good parks to go to. Have fun!
