Our male cat recently decided to mark his territory and it appears he has been using a corner of our living room as his new litter box to do so! It is SO disgusting...and the smell permeats everywhere in the house. He was sick when we first rescued him and we've tried our best to help him out. But its been one thing after another every since...and this is the last straw. We just can't get rid of that smell! Anyone have a Tried N True Carpet Cleaning service they have used specifically to deal with cat pee?

Thanks so very much!
R~

So What Happened?

Thanks so much to everyone giving feedback on how to minimize the smell. We may have to try that I guess. But first, we really needed to find someone that could hopefully clean the carpets really well too.

So, after looking also around some more on this site at other people with carpet cleaner needs.... Noticed a company called ZeroRez. My husband said he also had heard quite a bit about them on the radio station, KQRS, that he listens to alot and said they were highly recommending them all the time too! So, of course he urged me then that KQRS would not be suggesting them if they weren't good... They also advertised they use a natural type cleaning process. And with kids, figured that's a good thing! Was excited too as they offered a bunch of various other services to boot(upholstery cleaning, wood floor refinishing, granite sealing, etc). So, was excited to find a one-stop shop! So, we scheduled them out. But I have to say do NOT use these guys...they are a scam. And are absoltuely horrible in cleaning carpets. Sales Scam situation HORRIBLE!

They said they start with this 5 Step process...where they clean the carpets and that typically takes care of everything. I urged them to not do that this time with us here...we needed something much stronger to take care of the cat pee. AND I didn't have the time or want to have them back out again, especially since its the Holidays...I needed it done correct the first time. But the guy insisted that their 5 Step Process was SO good and usually gets rid of the problem...even cat pee...the first time. He also went on to make the brag...Claiming they didn't want to charge us for something we didn't need (Oh, the irony!). Then, he said they believed in it so much...that they gladly apply 5 Step Process money invested into the 7 Step process if the 5 Step Process didn't work. The amount he quoted me was an additional $100-200 to do so...depending on how much they had to do with the pad. I could live with that price...not happy about it...but could do it. Then, he also said that they have a 30 Day Guarantee too...and they stand behind their work. So, of course...with all those promises...it was something I could agree to. And I went with what I believed was true and honest information being given to me by this person.

Then, then came out to do the work... I was told there's usually two people that come out. There was only one guy that showed up. He was a pretty nice guy fortunately...so ok there. But then, as part of the 5 Step Process...I was told that the carpets are guaranteed to dry fast. As part of the promised 5 Step Process, as a standard measure, they even set up fans to help expedite the process. There were NO fans that showed up. And it took 3 days for the carpets to completely dry! Immediately after the guy left, we STILL smell cat pee everywhere!

I called back to see about re-scheduling the 7 Step Process... Fully expecting to hear about the ante up of another $100-200 during the Christmas time. We have kids of course...so this amount has grown to $500 to clean the carpets...tough. But I had figured that into my budget...even marked it down into my spreadsheet/notes. NOW, however the guys is giving me a new line of pricing information! The guy now is telling me the 7 Step process is going to cost us an additional $300-400 more! Twice the amount as originally quoted!! As part of this process, they'd have to replace the carpet pads and RE-Stretch the carpet again. Which is horrible to do... Having lived maybe too many lives in the short amount of time I've been on Earth...I know better on this one! There's only so much you can stretch a carpet and it should never be re-stretched again. It just doesn't work. Then, I said...well how about coming back and honoring your 30 day guarantee. Try cleaning it a 2nd time, maybe simply doing that will take care of it a little better at least. But he said the 30 Day guarantee does not cover pre-existing conditions. He would not come out again for that. So, cat pee or stains in your carpet...he basically told me that they do not cover under the 30 Day Guarantee to get out! So, I told him...what was the point of me even hiring you in the first place. And why did you use that as a way to sell me in using your company when we first spoke! You knew I had cat pee! Basically, any situation a person calls them in for to clean carpets...can easily and conveniently considered to not be covered under the guarantee. If their people happened to cause the damage while there, then that would probably be the only thing covered under this so-called '30 Day Guarantee'.

So advice here... ZeroRez... Do NOT use them. Its definitely set up to be a get rich quick, sales bait-n-switch make money fast scheme...with this 5-Step vs. 7 Step process thing they have going on. What a joke! There are other places such as Chem Dry (SURE THERE ARE OTHERS...STILL LOOKING!) that are honest and will guarantee they get it the first time. I could have went with Chem Dry for instance, for $300 and they have a product that would have gotten the smell and cat pee chemicals out the first time. No dealing with sales person haggling...you're dealt a straight hand of $$ cards up-front. No wasted time scheduling two trips and definitely no carpet stretching required!

His company name is Jetta Carpet Cleaning and phone number is ###-###-####.

Cat pee is the worst!! I've never used a carpet cleaning company, but I have used home treatments on animal urine. Try using diluted white/distilled vinegar. Spray it on the spot until saturated and then go over it with store purchased carpet cleaner and a vacuum. It's cheap and won't damage your carpet. I have had excellent results with the method in the past :) Your house may smell a bit like an easter egg for a day or two, but once it dries it will be fine. If the vinegar smell persists, go over it again with plain water.

I just used a rented Rug Doctor and the animal smell remover stuff they have to go with it. Worked like a charm, even on old, dried-in smells that I thought would not go away. Hope this helps-

I've never been able to afford a professional carpet cleaning service, so I've tried various products at home. I don't remember what we used most recently (for clothes and carpets, yuck!), but I went to Petsmart and explained my problem and tried what they recommended and it worked great. One thing I will pass along, and though it may not apply to you, it may help others: it turned out that our male cat who was doing all the peeing in corners had developed urinary crystals that were causing all the excess peeing. Our vet said that a healthy male cat who suddenly starts peeing in inappropriate places should immediately be brought in for a checkup, since this can be a sign of a bladder infection or urinary crystals (which can lead to death).

I can't help you with the carpet, but wanted to recommend Feliway for your cat if you haven't already tried it. It is a calming pheremone and can reduce/eliminate marking behavior. We have a cat who used to be extremely skittish and fearful and we used the Feliway diffuser for a few months and it's like having a totally new cat. The improvement in her behavior was amazing. Your vet should have it, or you can get it online or places like Chuck and Don's.

I have used Clean Carpets and More since I moved to the Twin Cities area. The guy does a good job at a reasonable price. He has coupons on his website and in mass mailers. I know by experience that he can get out cat pee and I feel for you.

Good luck,

OdoBan is the best, hands down. It works on cat, dog, and little boy urine. I buy it by the gallon at Sam's club for $13, they also sell it at Wal Mart for about 4 bucks a bottle.
