hi there
wondering if anyone has suggestions on how to wean to just morning and night feedings. i am going to have to go back to work soon, but dont want to give up completely. also, i have introduced enough bottles that i am starting to have less milk during the day when i do nurse. i am engorged when i wake in the a.m., but just wonder how to get just the p.m. one. do i just stop the other 2-3 feedings in the day time and see what happens. also, no suggestions that include pumping. i hate it.

What can I do next?

Hi there,

All I did was drop one feeding at a time every 2-3 days. Sometimes I was engorged and expressed just enough so it did not hurt too much. if you keep on feeding your baby at night you should retain your milk supply at that time. Try drop alternating ones first and then the ones in the middle. If you pump you will just keep making milk :)

hope this helps

I haven't gotten that far. I am pumping at work and feeding whenever I'm with him. My question is though is, I'm not so sure on the Mother's milk tea. I understood that it was supposed to increase your milk, so if you are trying to not have milk during the day wouldn't that just give you more milk?

So, sorry I didn't have any advice, but just wanted to point that out. The box of tea does say it's supposed to increase not decrease.

Good luck!

There is a book called "Nursing Mother, Working Mother" by Gale Pryor that should be VERY helpful!

I dropped a feeding a week and never had too much issue (just some little leaking, but no pain). I was still able to nurse in the morning and at night. I chose then to drop the morning first, and at one year, just had the night nursing. It was gradual, and worked for me and my daughter. Good luck!

When I had my oldest daughter, I returned to work full time after six weeks and had no problem continuing breast feeding without pumping. I would nurse her right before I left for work in the morning (at 7 am) then would nurse her immediately when I got home at 6 pm. I would also let her nurse at bed time. She got formula during the rest of the day. I think a big reason I was able to keep up my supply enough is I only have one functioning breast. This makes for a pretty lop sided appearance, but I have successfully breast fed three healthy little ones:) I do recall that by the end of the day, I was feeling pretty engouraged and had to make sure I had nusing pads to line my bra or I would leak (Icky). Good luck!

The less you nurse, the less milk you will have. The dr told me to cut out one feeding at a time in 4-7 day intervals. So if you are still doing 4 feedings a day, do 3 feeding for 4 days, then 2 feeding for 4 days, down to where you want to be at the nighttime one. Its easier to slow down production than to just cold turkey nursing. That hurts so bad!

I hope I helped!!

I would gradually reduce the feedings if I were you. Hopefully you have a few weeks before returning to work so you can ease your baby into this new schedule. Also, ease your own body because right now, you are producing based on how often you nurse. As you gradually decrease the amounts of times you nurse, your body will soon follow and produce less so you don't have to worry about being engorged. Just have this set before you return to work or else you will be uncomfortable at work without nursing or pumping. Good luck!!! And on a personal note, I loved nursing my daughter even after I went back to work. When I would get home, it was my intimate time with her and kind of eased my withdrawl pains from being away from her all day. :) Take care!
