Even before I took my routine test, I had some suspicions that I might be affected by gestational diabetes . . . my husband was diagnosed 4 years ago with SEVERE diabetes (he's now insulin pump dependent) so I am very familiar with the symptoms. Anyway, sure enough, it came back high . . . I did the 3 hour test 2 days ago and will here back in a couple of days on results.

Anyway . . . if I do have this . . . I want to hear from other moms who have dealt with this how it went . . . I am familiar with everything BUT gestational diabetes. How did it affect your baby? Did it resolve for you (I've heard rarely it doesn't)? Did you have to take insulin, or could you control it with diet? Were there any OTHER complications that arose as a result? I am a little scared . . . mostly for the baby. As I said, my husband and I have lived with this disease for 4 years now and it already dictates much of our lifestyle, so it's not a big deal there. But I do worry about the baby . . . Anyway, websites can only tell you so much . . . I would really like to hear from moms who have been here. ( :

So What Happened?

My doctor called me this morning and I don't have it!! I did apparently have one of the 4 readings come back high, but she said it's fine, I just need to watch my refined sugars (which I started doing when I got the first test results, and will continue doing). So, good news there!! Thanks to all the mamas who gave me advice!!

Hi J.,
I had GD with two of my three pregnancies. I had to go on insulin for the last month of pregancey with one and almost the entire pregnancy for the last one. My children are both healthy thank God. First one with GD is now a senior in high school!! and super smart, healthy weight, not diabetic. My youngest is now ten, also very bright and healthy. Thank God. I had to go to ALOT of dr appts when i was pregnant with them. I had four sonograms a week with the last one, to make sure everything was ok. I had to have a fetal cardiac echo done on her to make sure her heart developed ok, all of these things are routine precautions. You will have to monitor your blood sugar, and remember to eat right. For me, it just made me more vigilant to make good choices. I was overweight, and actually ended up lighter after having the babies, though i gained adequately for pregnancy. I had them by scheduled c-sections 2-3 weeks early to avoid them getting too big, but they were completely normal weight. I think they went ahead and scheduled my c-sections since my first baby was non gd and i had a c-section with her. Read up, be as healthy as you can be, and definitely dont worry, because you will be under closer watch and chances are you will have as healthy or even healthier baby as you could without this issue. God bless!

I had GD when I was pregnant with my daughter almost 3 years ago. I was so bummed out about it because I like my food and never needed to watch what I ate, but it wasn't that bad. I was able to control it with diet and not have to take insulin shots. It had no affect on my baby. I wouldn't worry about it. Good luck.

I had GD with my second pregnancy. I was really bummed about it only because I was preggers with twins, and thought wow I'm really eating for two...LOL.
I kept is under control by watching what I ate, and had to make sure I ate small meals frequently all was fine. After I gave birth my blood returned to normal. There was no affect to either boy and so far everything is fine, the boys are now 9 years old.
Do talk to your doctor though and get any recomendations he/she may have to keep it in control.

I had this with my first child. I as the others here, controlled it through diet and the baby was unaffected. It will depend on how severe your condition is. Your blood work will indicate to the doctor weather or not to put you on insulin. The GD went away after I gave birth and so far has never returned. I do my best to watch my weight because I don't want this disease in my life. Take care; it's worth what ever you have to do to manage this disease. It's a killer.
