Hi, I am looking where I could buy a generic alternative train set other than the Thomas Brand. I read online that Target sales a generic brand, but have not seen it. Can you please offer me some ideas and what the generic pricing may be? Thanks! I want it to work with the Thomas trains...

I got some of the Ikea train pieces. One word of caution is that the "bridge"/ tunnel is not tall enough for Thomas trains. We have it, and if you run a track under it, the Thomas trains are too tall for it. If you don't do that, they work fine.

I bought a Playskool set once.

Also, I use my 40% off coupons to buy them at Michaels.

If you are willing to have something other than wood, the Fisher Price GeoTrax line is very nice, durable, and easy for the kids to use and reconfigure.

I don't know about Target, but Ikea and Toys R Us wooden track works (more or less) with Thomas wooden track and the trains are the same size/style.

Yep -- Imaginarium is the one. As the previous poster stated, you can get a complete track set with table and trains for $150 or so. If you want to buy additional trains, you get about three wooden trains for about $15 -- the same price of a single Thomas train. Plus, you can purchase all the wooden Thomas train figures and they fit on the tracks.

Toys R Us also has an Imaginarium you may want to check out. I bought mine on sale about 4 years ago and it has held up well. If you aren't in a hurry, there are good sales that pop up that come with extras. The Toys R Us one does work with the Thomas trains. We have the Imaginarium accessories and then buy the thomas trains...

My daughter has the Imaginarium tracks as well as Melissa & Doug tracks. The Thomas trains work on both tracks and I'm able to connect the Imaginarium and the Melissa & Doug tracks together. They're all mixed together in a box, so I can't even be able to tell a difference between the Imaginarium & the M&D tracks.

Toys R Us sells Imaginarium Train sets. The tracks are compatable w/Thomas Trains. We got a table, track set w/a bunch of trains for 129.00 on sale. I think the full price was around 149? Just search imaginarium train on the website and you'll see them.
