My son is allergic to cow's milk also, and we went to soy milk. My son loves it! He is 6 1/2 and has been on it since he was 10 months old. Something to be aware of is...it can take a week or so for the body to adjust to soy. But some kids don't have any problems at all. Good Luck!

Hi D.,
I would do some research. I have read some very alarming things concerning soy. I am thinking of putting my dd on lactose free milk since she's not reacting well to cow's milk. It gives her GERD (acid reflux).
There is a lot of controvery today concerning the effects of soy, fertility etc...

I too have had 2 kids that were allergic to cows milk. We used Silk Soy milk (vanilla flavored) as well and bith of them grew out of it by the time they were two. I am hoping that my 10 month old does the same. Good luck

I know there are soy milks out. They would be your at your local store. You can always ask your doctor at your son's one year check-up.

There are a number of animals that give milk that is pasteurized and sold in stores....esp whole foods and wild oats. Water buffalos, sheeps, goats, camels, horses, yaks, donkeys, reindeer all give milk and have distributors that sell them....see if you can pinpoint what PART of milk she's allergic to...eg, if it's the protein, try something with a lesser amount of protein in it. Having had to drink soy milk, I can tell you it's not fun. It doesn't taste good. Give me buffalo or goat milk any day of the week.

My son can not have cow's milk either! I use Silk Soymilk! He wouldn't take the plain flavored one right away so I got vanilla and then mixed the vanilla with the plain and now he takes the plain. I have heard the plain does have a bit of a funny taste. As for formula I used Next Step Prosobee after he was 1! I still use this when we are going to be out and about for the day because the Soy Milk is harder to find. (Although I have learned that if you ask for it some places do have some hidden in the back!!) I hope this helps you!!

Has your baby been tested for milk allergies? I was just wondering because I am going through the same thing right now my baby was on soy formula and when I put her on milk she didn't take well to it. We tried lactose free milk and soy milk and had no luck. We are now waitimg until test results come back on her allergy test so until then I am supposed to give her calcium enreiched orange juice once a day give her a vitamin and 1/2 a tums twice a day so she gets her calcium but that is just a short term fix until we find out what is going on. I know babies that had to be on nutramigin(sp) and were fine on cows milk. I would talk to you dr about it. Hope this helps.

It's up to you...we are the only species that weans from it's own milk to another species. You don't necessarily HAVE to give a child milk if he is getting fat and calcium in other forms.
That said, if you want a milk substitute, try rice, almond, and soy milks. There is no reason to give a toddler formula! I know a couple of the companies make a 8-18 month formula, but it's an absurd way to make more money! Is he lactose intolerant (allergic) or does he just have a cow milk protein intolerance? Have you tried yogurt? Whole milk yogurt is a great way to make up for the fat and calcium he's not getting from drinking straight milk.

Good Luck!

My daughter is 17 months old and she is allergic to cow's milk also and we have her on soymilk. She really likes it. It is expensive but not as expensive as formula. With the soymilk there are 3 different falvors, original, vanilla and chocolate. Also, when I make anything that she is going to eat I use soymilk and you can not even tell. Well I hope this hellps!!

There are many options to discuss with your dr, but i gave my son soy milk initially because of lactose problems. There is also rice milk, again you'll want to consult a pediatrician first.

Soymilk or rice milk could be alternatives. My son tends to get very constipated if he gets a lot of cow's milk, so we buy Soysilk's Kids Very Vanilla Soymilk, which he loves. We're vegetarians, so I'm happier giving him that anyway, as it has some iron in it. There are other flavors of rice and soy milks, too, but that particular one has some extra vitamins in it. I'm sure there are some children who can't tolerate soy, though I don't happen to know of any allergies to it. You should probably ask your pediatrician for advice as well. Hope that helps.

I am with everyone else on the soy milk recommendation. One of my sons was on Nutramigen also and it does get expensive. But, soy milk is a lot cheaper. The plain does taste a little "different" though so see if you can get a flavored kind. Good luck!!

My son is allergic to cows milk too. We give him soy milk and rice milk. He really likes both (especially the vanilla soy). It costs about 2.75 per half gallon so it is not to bad. Good Luck.
