I am 14wk and 6days pregnant. I went in when i was 13wks and the sonographer noticed the neck was a little thick but didnt get a measurement. So i went to a sonographer specialtist today and the fluid from the side of the babys neck was 3.3mm and behind the babys head was 6.8mm. My baby does have a nasal bone and they want me come back at 18wks for another scan. But said they cant tell if my baby has down snydrome or not because i didnt get a measurement in the 1st trimester. So now im kinda worried. Im 22 and my husband is 28 and we have no family history of this and we have a 2 1/2 year old that is healthy.

What can I do next?

I had this when I was 12 weeks pregnant with my first child. I was told that the fluid measurement was high and that my chances of Down's Syndrome were increased due to this measurement. The fact that the baby has a nasal bone is a very good sign.
Please, please, please do not worry about this. These measurements, and the information they give you from the measurements, are not always accurate. They are based on statistics, but we are all different and all grow differently.
My son was born perfectly healthy after a lot of worry through my pregnancy. Just try to enjoy your pregnancy, it should be a wonderful time for you :)

The chances of this are very low. I just had a baby at 39 and they tried to get the measurement but couldn't because of how the baby was positioned. My doctor said that there was less than 1% chance that I'd have a problem anyway. I know that it happens sometimes but try not to worry about it until you know for sure. Think positive until you know either way. Most of these things have a way of working out. I know with one of mine, they had fluid on the kidneys but when he was born, he was fine. Another one had a spot on her brain but when she was born she was fine. I also had alloimmune thrombocytopenia so they were extra cautious but all in all, my babies were all fine. I wish you the best!! Congratulations!!

We had this issue and after several ultrasounds it was determined it was a false alarm. Please try not to worry too much. These measurements are not always accurate.
Good luck!

Statistically, odds are that your baby is fine. But, if you are really concerned, ask your ob about getting a CVS test. It is diagnostic, by looking at the genes in the baby's placenta. You'll have to go to a perinatologist to have it done, and there is some risk involved, but you would know for sure. However, you should consider what you would do with this information either way. With my 2nd pregnancy, we had a high measurement on an ultrasound, and we confirmed down syndrome with a CVS test just a day before I miscarried. In our case, we knew that we'd continue with the pregnancy, but that knowing would help us prepare any support we needed. With my 3rd pregnancy, we were able to confirm a genetically healthy pregnancy through CVS, and we now have 2 great, healthy kids.
If you are really worried, and know that you would not continue a pregnancy with genetic issues, confirm it with a CVS.

There isn't much I can say- only the doctor can tell- and even then you may not know 100% until the baby is born. Also, although I cetainly don't know a LOT about down syndrome... I do know that they are varying degrees of "complications" and some kids are actually pretty ok and live very happy healthy lives, even growing up to live on they're own and hold jobs and have relationships and marriages and so on.

What i can say is that worrying yourself to death won't help. (If i were in your shoes I can't say I wouldn't BE worried, I am just suggesting you try to be healthy and not get too caught up in it.)

I really hope this is just a false alarm- but even if it does turn out to be the case that your baby has down syndrome... remember that love, dedication and just a little faith can do miracles!

Good Luck!

I went through something similar. My youngest had a dilated ventricle in her brain. At the time of being pregnant with her I had a healthy child already. I went through a lot of ups and downs...but worried almost my whole pregnancy. Today, my youngest is 3, happy and healthy. It ultimately ended up being a cyst in her ventricle that would go away on its own.

My advice is to get to a specialist ASAP so you can ease your mind or prepare yourself. Best wishes!

After blood work with my 3rd child, they told me I had like a 1 in 512 chance my daughter had Downs. I refused a amniosynthesis because it wouldn't change my decision to have her. So I prepared for her to be born with Down's as best one can and prayed for the best. After an extensive sonogram it was determined she didn't have it.

So my advise, as hard as it is, is to relax, read all you can about it, get online with Mom's of Downs children and pray. I know you're young, have a healthy child and no family history, but one of my dear friends was just like you & their 2nd child was born unexpectedly with Downs, their 1st and 3rd were not. She is a lovely young adult now and often travels with Women of Faith conferences signing for them.

Hang in there, I believe God gives those special children to special parents.

Even if your baby has Down's, you should know that most of the families I know with down's syndrome children say they are a blessing to their families, and not a drain. They are amazing, gifts.... I'm praying for you!
