my daughter had a really flat head also at that age. i remember really being worried about it. but she grew out of it when she started rolling more and falling asleep more on her stomach after 6 months.

i have seen children with the helmet, but i think it has to be pretty extreme for that. i am assuming that if you are going to childrens that maybe your pediatrician was concerned? or is that where your pediatrician is? but i think at 6months they are just really learning to roll over more and play on their tummys more, so he'll probably grow out of it. good luck.

hi.

my son had NICU head (flat on the sides of his head. what I did was keep turn his head in his sleep... while later i will turn it back to other side... to balance the shape of his head. i sometime make sure he sleep on his back of head. you can keep turn and make sure he sleep on his sides and aviod back... as temp soultion but not solve it fully but it will help some. bedtime, nap and etc.

Hi B.,
Just a thought, but has your son been checked for torticollis? My daughter was found to have it when she was just 6 weeks old. She was in physical therapy for 7 months. Torticollis is a tightening of the muscles on one side of the neck so that it's hard to turn the head. My daughter would only look one way and her head started to flatten from lying in the same position. The therapy did wonders, fixed it completely. If it is torticollis, your son would definitely benefit from physical therapy.
Even if it's not torticollis, I've been told that babies usually have a preference as to which way their head goes when they sleep. Once your son start rolling and moving around more it will probably correct itself as long as the doctors haven't found any other problems.
Good luck!

Hi B.,

I don't have any personal experience but my daughter was in the NICU for almost 6 weeks (she came home last week, hooray!!) and the nurse who taught the discharge class discussed this flat head issue. I don't want to freak you out but I think you should know that she said there's a window of time in which it can be corrected and I'm pretty sure she said it was 6 months. I'd definitely keep that appointment! One thing she pointed out, too, is that if it is not corrected, not only can it look funny but as the child grows, their bike and sports helmets might not fit correctly and then they're not adequately protected.

Best of luck to you!!
