My five year old son has recurring thrush. We have been to 9 different pediatricians and specialist who can not tell us why this is occuring. He has been tested for immune deficiencies but found nothing. He has also been tested for food allergies twice and found that he is only allergic to corn. I have taken him off of sugar which has helped but over a period of time he must take nystatin to clear it up. He had strep throat as a baby for almost three years until having his tonsils out at the age of three. That's when all of the thrush started. I treat him with acidophilus daily and a no-sugar multivitamin. He uses a non-floride toothpaste and eats a nutritional diet. He is a typical little boy but has OCD and is about to be tested for ADD. Does anyone know what this might be? Please help!

This can be frustrating. But I am going to ask you a question that sometimes get missed and it will seem obvious afterwards. Have you thrown away his toothbrush? The toothbrush is a playground for bacteria and germs to live. Most people don't think about getting a new one after having strep and that is often why they end up getting it again.

Have they every tested him for staf infection? If its some type of infection like staf, it will not clear up until it is treated with the correct meds. Have you tried going on the web to MD.com or any other search engines? There has to be reason this will not clear up, and I agree with you, it can't be healthy. Good luck. B. H

If you live in the Birmingham/Moody/Trussville area...you should consider taking your son to see Rhonda Dial. She is an herbalist and helped me over come severe candida which sounds like what your child has. The Candida can also make your child have the problems that would make you think of ADD.. She has a store in Alabaster and one in Trussville. The name is Go Naturel and it's only $20.00 for an appointment. She helped me when no medical doctor could and I had already spent thousands on medical testing...

Hi J.;
I am no doctor either, but we had a foster baby that was that way, every time we turned around she would have thrush and it is very rough on the babies. It is like a woman having a yeast infection. Has your baby been on a lot of antibotics in his life time that can cause a build of up the yeast candid in their bodies.

"Also this is an old wives tale, but we tried it and it works believe me" You take that baby to a man that has never seen his father (the man's father) and let that man blow in that baby's mouth 3 times that yeast infection will be gone. I know it sounds off the wall but as God as my witness it works.
Good luck.

J., Your son most likely has a yeast problem systemically. Have they done a stool sample? I used to get lots of vaginal yeast infection as a teenager. I thought it was part of being a girl, until my chiropractor and I talked. He found that the yeast was high all through my body. We did some dietary changes and used probiotics to balance my systems flora. It took a few weeks to get back in order. I haven't had a yeast infection in 10 years! First thing is to increase his water intake , and cut out yeasty foods, like breads and cut out sugar completely. Yeast loves to eat sugar. He needs to be on a probiotic that is at least 5 billion organisms. The higher the better. Taking them will help to balance the flora in his body. Open a capsule and mix it with yogurt then apply to tongue and leave for 3-4 minutes, then rinse. You can mix the probiotic with anything, to get him to take it. They come in liquid form too. I’m not a doctor, but these are the things I did to get better and it worked. You should see a Homeopathic doctor, they’ll have more info. You can use Gentian Violet instead of Nystatin for thrush. It only takes 3 days to work instead of ten.

Your son has a systemic yeast infection due to all the rounds of anti-biotics he had to take because of the strep throat. The pro-biotics are helpful, as is the low sugar diet, but apparently it's not enough. I would go to a really good naturalpath or nutritionist who is familiar with chronic yeast infection. They will probably recommend no wheat in the diet for a while, no supplemental yeast of any kind. No white potatoes, no white rice. Garlic is a good anti-fungal. So is colloidal silver. I would think that he might be deficient in zinc, but that should only be given in low doses, especially for a child. I have to get it in liquid form to control the dose. Apparently you can also rub oregano oil into the bottoms of his feet (it's very strong and h*** o* the digestive tract for some people). For an adult, it's good to feed lots of salads and vegetables, and keep it to complex carbs, nuts, etc. for snacks. I know that's really h*** o* kids, though, because all kids foods and snacks seem to be high in simple carbs (like chips and crackers). Good luck!!

Good luck!

Hi J., You might want to check into some stuff called Probiotics, it is a natural remedy and it helps alot of people with recurring yeast problems. You take it all the time and it boosts your immune system to prevent illness or sickness. Just google probiotics or go to a natural food store and you should be able to find it. God Bless you R.

Thrush is caused by yeast. In his case, he probably needs to be treated with an oral medication that targets candida specifically.

Your dentist should be able to help.

J.,

I was just surfing the internet for thrush and found this website (http://www.medicinenet.com/thrush/article.htm). I was wondering if you are brushing your sons teeth as well as his tongue. I would assume you are...but if you haven't that might be something to try...brushing his tongue that is. We brush the twins tongue, which helps with their breath.

I would maybe suggest taking a trip to your dentist or calling at least, if you haven't already. Since it is a mouth problem, and dentist handle that area, it wouldn't hurt to try at this point.

Hope that helps.

Take care,
God Bless,
J. D

My son had "hidden" allergies: he is allergic to food preservatives that are routinely added to our everyday foods. (Allergist do not normally test for food additives.) I was advised to try a 90-day, true vegetarian diet (no meat) and no processed foods (organic only). It was a radical change and I had the support of both his pediatrician and allergist. Since it was just the two of us, it was rather simple: I got rid of everything in the cabinets and refrig and started over. It was well worth it. Within one week his symptoms disappeared!!! We had always eaten a lot of chicken and veges but I never realized how much "stuff" was in our foods because of how we grow, store, and process our food. Given you have a larger family, I don't know how successful this would be if you haveto cook two meals. Anyway, good luck and God bless!!

When my oldest son (now 4) was about 2-3 months old a pharmacist told us not to waste our money filling prescriptions for thrush. That if we would go to the store and get regular yogurt that it would do the job just as good. So the first time we went ahead and filled the prescription and it took forever for it to go away. Well the next time he got thrush I went and got some yogurt and fed him some of it and the next day I could tell a huge difference. So maybe you could incoprate yogurt in to his daily meals. Just a suggestion.

Check webmd.com it has a lot of info on thrush, it is a dentist who can be of help to you. The following is something I found on webmd.

How Is Thrush Treated?
While healthy children and adults can be effectively treated, the symptoms my be more severe and difficult to manage in those with weakened immune systems. Antifungal medications, which are generally taken for 10 to 14 days, are often prescribed to treat thrush. These medicines are available in tablets, lozenges, or liquids. Your dentist will have a specific treatment approach designed for you based on your age and the cause of the infection. Because the presence of candida infection can be a symptom of other medical problems, your dentist may suggest you seek care from a medical doctor as well so that any underlying health problems you may have can be treated.

Hi,
There was an autism special on either 20/20 or Nightline recently. Jenny McCarthy was on talking about her son Evan who has autism. She talked a lot about some doctor in (I think) Florida who is considered a specialist in autism. Apparently he has found yeast to be a major problem in his patients, and has linked it to autism (ADD is SOMETIMES part of autism. He treats his patients with special medications and state that they have shown a lot of improvement with their attention. He said that sometimes the yeast is so mild that you can't even see it but it's still causing a problem! You might want to check out her book at the bookstore or library to get the doctor's information. Sorry I can't remember the title but it's very popular.

Hi J., Of course I am not a Doctor, a business major actually......But I would really encourage you to pursue the advice of a Naturapathic Doctor. My son and I do have a Medical Doctor but also see Dr. Mary Schrick in Edmond, whom is WONDERFUL. I read up on a lot of Health & Wellness issues and a lot of literature points to the symptoms you named as Yeast overgrowth in his body (Yeast is actually parasites). Some good Cleanses and then implementing some natural remedies for Yeast in addition to the Acidophilus your doing might be helpful. It may be that the overgrowth has gotten so extreme in his little body that extreme treatment might be needed to get to the root of the problem and get him healthy. Best of luck to you and your precious boy!
