First Haircut Advice?

If you're going for a short haircut, it's MUCH easier with hair clippers. Amazon has a bunch you can choose from. Look at the attachment numbers they come with. We got a set that comes with a #8 attachment, which is really nice and long so I can cut even the hair on top wtih that and it's not anything like a buzz cut. If you can cut his dad's hair (or pretend to) first that might help him get used to the sound of the clippers, but they never bothered our son.

I agree with the other posters on having a camera ready, and having a distraction source is good too to keep their head still. Good luck!

I put my 17 month old son in his high chair and turn Elmo on. Then i use clippers, and put the biggest guard on and do up to his ears, the top i use scissors... That is much harder. If his hair is short enough, just use clippers. I can't on the top with my son because his hair is too long and it pulls. Its tricky. I'm not sure where you live, put there are a lot of specialty shops that do just children. They have fun little cars they sit in and make it fun for them. If he's a real wiggle worm, you may just be better off getting it professionally done.

I still cut my son's hair, he did not do well at the hair salon. What works for him is putting him in his little car (it is like an excersaucer) which he is standing in and put on a brainy baby video which mesmerizes him as I trim his hair. It is safest to use the baby scissors which does not have sharp tips just in case he turns his head quickly, you don't want to scratch him. I make sure his hair is damp before I trim it, it is easier and less mess to clean up. Plan to change his clothing since hair gets everywhere. It is best to be sure they are fed and not too tired when you plan to do this job, just makes it a more pleasant experience for you both. The peach fuzz on the neck is still a challenge, he still dodges any type of loud buzzer.
Just try to distract him and have him secure before you attempt the new do! Good luck to you.

I have variously trimmed my 17 m/o hair but we are going next week for his first cut by the hair dresser.
When snipping his hair I would snip with it combed out straight (to give it a slight dimension and avoid the straight-across look).
One mistake I made a few months back was going back in for a touch-up while he was in the bath. I think it's more difficult with wet hair since it clumps and sure enough there was a huge chunk missing in back from a 'bad move'.
You may want to consider splurging for the first cut and observe how the hairdresser does it.
If you do it yourself, don't expect to get the job done in one sitting (unless you get lucky!)
