Eye Patch

My 22 month old has a "lazy" eye. The doctor prescribed the eye patch for her and in the beginning she was wearing it for the required length (4 hours/day). Now, however, she knows she's able to take it off herself and won't leave the patch on for more than 15 minutes tops. How do I get her to keep the patch on so her eye gets better?

What can I do next?

my daughterwent thru all that and wearing the patch is so beneficial and it does work. maybe try a bribe, if she wears the patch, she gets candy/prize, or whatever. she's very young and I"m sure she hates it.. I used one type of patch that was really hard to get off, but when you want to get it off, it's a struggle,.. not a great option, but maybe she'd leave it on longer.. they alsomake cute ones now too.. I don't know who your dr is, but Microsurgical Eye Associates has patches on the wall that have ladybugs and cutepix on them.. maybe that would help.. good luck... the good news is, she's very young and by catching it this young, you might be able to correct it!!!!

Have you tried turning it into a game. Call her a pirate and say "Argh" and stuff like that. You can also give her a silly name. Get really into it. I don't know if you can split up the time and do it in 2 hr incraments or if she has to do 4 hrs straight.

If it's like the "olden days" it would be an eyepatch with an elastic around the head? If it is, lucky you that she's a girl. Try putting little hair clips all the way around the elastic and her hair. When she tries pulling, it'll pinch a bit so maybe she'll leave it be. I've also seen eyepatches taped on (very itchy).Your doctor should have some ideas for this since I don't think any toddler would leave one on! It must be exhausting trying to keep that on and also work with 2 little ones on your own. Way to go Mom, you're doing great!

I don't have any advice for you, but I've been there. Growing up I was the one wearing an eyepatch. I had glasses just for this cause. They put the patch right on them. I was older maybe 6 or 7, so I understood better. I understood what was going on and why I needed it, however, it made me feel awful. I used to beg my mom to not have to wear it. She of course made me wear it for how ever long I was supposed to, it never made a differnce in me. As I got older I switched my eye doctor, and my new one told me that had they caught my lazy eye ahead of time and did the eye patch thing sooner then it would have made more of a difference. I made sure to ask him if there was something that caused it and all he told me was more then likely I was born with it this way. It's very dificult having to wear something like that, but it's for the better. Hopefully this will make a difference in your daughter's eye. Good Luck!

My older daughter use to wear a eye patch for the very same reason (lazy eye). We had the sticky ones, that where somewhat like a band-aid. The way we got her to wear the patches was to decorate them. Some patches you buy have stickers you can put on the patches to decorate them. If not we would buy stickers and jewels and decorate them ourselves. So when we put her patch on during the morning, we put it on and then spend 5 mins to decorate the next days patch. It eventually stayed on for the time limit and we even had trouble getting it off of her sometimes. Hope you can figure something out, because it does help ALOT with strengthening the lazy eye.
