So What Happened?

Thank you everyone for such great creative ideas ... my daughter and her husband flew up to see his folks for Thanksgiving ... unfortunately my daughter was too excited to wait to tell them and ended up giving her MIL a Thanksgiving card for grandma ... she absolutely loved it and was so excited ... (she was only about a month so it was too early for a sonogram) ...

Thanks again and maybe these will come of use the next time around ... Many Blessings to you all

Hi C.,

We went out to dinner with the family and I bought a little pair of Keds and gave it to them as a present. They loved it!

We wrapped up a package of baby wipes with a note that said we hoped she would be available to teach us how to change diapers. My sister gave her a photo album with a copy of the ultra sound on the first page. Good luck.

With my first pregnancy, we invited everyone out to dinner - both sets of parents. We wrapped cigars for all of the men and they opened it up. Then we announced that we were pregnant. have you gotten a sono pic yet? You could scan that and frame it; then wrap it up for her to open. That would be fun.

I got my MIL a bib that said "My Grandma Loves Me" and it took her about a split second to start crying (happy tears). My own parents live in Europe, and we (husband and I) skyped them and asked them if they wanted to come visit us in April (my due date) to meet someone and when they asked, who, we just looked at them funny :)

I make custom fortune cookies. I have had folks use them from everything from Pregnancy and Birth Announcements to Brides asking friends to be in their weddings, boys asking dates to the Prom, and Party Favors. These cookies are quite large and can be customized completely (color, flavor, decorations, and fortune).

Ok the first thing that came to my mind and is probably off the mark. She should dress in a Santa costume. And obviously they will recognize her. After they do, She could start to remove the belt and the coat and on the pillow she is wearing it should say "It's a ? due on ______! COngratulations Grandma and Grandpa" or whatever they want to be called.

We made a cookie basket with the cookies in shapes of bottles and storks and so on, we have also put the sonogram in a card. The cookie basket didn't work for who we gave it to, it was for my father in law and he was against us getting pregnant, and not very observent, I think if it is done right and going to a womazn it will work.

I wrote each of the grandparents this letter & gave it to them with a silver ornament.
Ever so sadly, we lost this baby.

Dear Grandpa and Grandma,

Sometime in late August I will be here to meet you. Until then, know that I am busy growing, sleeping, eating and most of all just waiting until the first moment that you hold me in your arms and look into my eyes.
I will know your voice, know your stories, and know your love from the very moment that you and I are together.

My little life is precious to my mom and dad. Together they created the miracle that is me. With any luck I will carry forth the traits that you passed along to them. Maybe I’ll have my dad’s curls and my mom’s pale skin. Maybe I’ll have dad’s eyes and mom’s round cheeks. We’ll just have to wait patiently while God works his magic as he puts the details into my creation.

Should I be a girl I hope that you will teach me the things that all little girls should know. Grandma, I’ll need to know things like how to dance, how to play dress-up, how to put my hair in pigtails and most of all how to be a lady. Grandpa, I hope that you will teach me how to fish, how to throw so I don’t throw like a girl, how to climb trees and how to protect myself. Little ladies need Grandpa’s to clap the loudest at dance recitals, spelling bees, and t-ball games. Your presence assures me that “I can do it” and that you are proud of me.

Should I be a boy I trust that you will show me all there is to learn about growing up to become a gentleman. Grandma, I will count on you to keep me centered, teach me manners and to show me how to be nice even when I don’t want to. Although boys may be rough and tumble, we still need to be snuggled and spoiled by our Grandma’s. Your arms will provide hugs that no one else can match.
Grandpa, if I am a boy you’ll have a big and important job ahead of you. I look forward to learning about bugs, animals and all things that are considered gross by girls! I want to spend the day fishing – just the two of us. I want to find adventures with you and I want you to tell me stories about when you were little. I want to know everything that you know because there’s nothing greater than a grandpa’s wisdom and stories.

Until we meet in August know that I already love you. Know that I have already heard stories about you. Know that I trust you and understand that you are an important part of my life. Know that I need you, both physically and spiritually. Know that you are part of me and I am part of you. My joy and happiness are a reflection of my surroundings so I trust that you will be here for me to love me, support me, and to make memories with me.

Pray for me and my mom & dad as we all grow together. Your love will help us and guide us in preparation for my arrival.

My little heart is yours.
Love,

Baby Jones

My son and daughter in law recently surprised us with news about our first grandchild in a special way. We received a box in the mail with a colorful flyer that said-We wanted you to be ready for the main attraction-coming May 2010! We weren't quite sure what that meant but further down in the box-there were two Mickey Mouse hats w/ears that said " Grandma "and "Grandpa"! We were so excited to find out about the birth of our first grandchild. Since our whole family are big Disney fans, this was a great way to share the news!

My husband and I took copies of our sonogram picture and placed them in a gift box. We took our parents out to dinner and had them open the present. My mom started crying right away (this was her 3rd grandchild) - but it took my MIL a few minutes to get the idea (it was her first).

My husband and I took our in-laws to dinner and gave each of them a gift bag. In the gift bag was a bib. One for her that said "I love Grandma" and one for him that said "I love Grandpa." They got the message and loved the gifts! They still have the bibs and our girls use them when they are over there.

If your friend is having a sonogram before the holidays, she could wrap it up for her mother-in-law.

At thanksgiving we always have everyone write down one thing they are thankful for and put all the pieces of paper in a basket, and after dinner someone reads them aloud and we all guess who is thankful for each one. It is a fun game and a great way for everyone to announce pregnancies, raises, new houses, etc. in a surprise way. You could start that new tradition in your family!

When I was expecting my son almost 8 years ago, my mother had previously told me she wanted to be called "Mimi". So I bought a little picture book she could carry in her purse that said "Mimi's Brag Book". My dad wanted to be called "Poppa" so I gave his a shirt that said "Poppa's my name and spoiling's my game!"

This summer, I found out I was pregnant again and I had my now 7 year old son tell them he had good news. He then told them he was going to be a big brother.

My brother and SIL found out they were pregnant last year right before Christmas. They gave my mom an early gift which was a baby blanket.

Our first child, we went to their house and "planted" baby booties and socks throughout the house. (ie. the knife drawer, her makeup bag, his golf bag) After about the fourth finding, they got it! For our second child, we wrapped the ultrasound picture as a gift. AND for the third, our oldest told them!!!!

I had a friend who made a cake with baby booties on it. If they will be celebrating Thanksgiving together she could bring dessert. My Grandparents both lived in different states so we sent them flowers with a card. It was close to Easter when we told them and I was due around Halloween so we put "Some bunny special is due to treat us around Halloween". Not necessarily poetic but fun.

You could always set an extra place setting at the table. When someone finally realizes that there is an empty seat, say you're saving it for someone very special that will be arriving around (your due date).

I had lived one street over from my m-i-l for 5 yrs and she hounded me to get pregnant the whole time. We were transferred out of state and about a year later I got pregnant. I found out the very same day they were due to come for a visit. So, for dessert that night, I served "pickles and ice cream"! The look on their faces was priceless!

Are they going to be together over the holiday? If so, what about the bun in the oven thing? Ask her to go get something out of the oven. When she opens it, there is only one bun sitting there. It may take her a minute, but she'll figure it out.
