Diamonds Keep Falling Out of Rings...

mine loses the diamonds all the time also I am not as h*** o* my ring as I was before my children and I lose a diamond or 2 or 3 every couple of months. My setting is platium and soft so I guess that is why and that is what i have heard .. ready to get it switch to white gold instead

No! I have worn my diamonds gardening, raising 3 kids, and washing dogs...and have never had a diamond fall out.

I've worn my diamonds since 1995. Not one diamond has ever fallen out! I don't think that's normal at all.

Yikes!!!! I would say that the jewelers should be more concerned about their product! My rings were also custom made, and I have not lost a stone in 5 years. I DO take them to the jeweler every 6 months and leave them for the setting to be "tightened", the rings cleaned and shined and rhodium plated.
I have a 6 prong setting and the prongs are platinum, while the rest of the ring is white gold. My main stone sits above the rings, it is not in a bezel. The jeweler recommends to remove the engagement ring while sleeping as the prongs can catch on the sheets.
I bet your husband's ego is a bit hurt, and that is why he says everyone has this problem, but it's really not common. Try a different jeweler for service.

Uh, tell your husband this is an IQ test... How many times should your diamond fall out before you acknowledge that the present course/action is not working? Lady Luck has been very kind to you, in letting you find the diamonds thus far... But I hear luck can turn...

Nooooo, I lost a teeny-tiny little diamond in the band once, but that was replaced for less than $100. I've NEVER had a problem with the setting/prongs. (Perhaps your stone's cut is not the ideal shape for the setting you chose? Maybe its stressing the prongs, little by little, and loosening them until the stone falls out?)

I should also mention that, unlike most women, I chose not to wear my diamond ring all the time... I don't wear it to wash dishes, I don't wear it in the shower or when bathing my daughter, I don't wear it while doing housework or when using cleansers. I have a gold band that I wear when 'dressing down' or when exercising.

Sounds to me like you need a new setting... Let's put it into perspective: A new diamond costs several thousand dollars to replace... A new setting cost a couple hundred. Gold is one of the softest metals--although you did not say what your ring is made of (gold, white gold, platinum)? Some other aspects to consider is 1.) how many times have you had it sized? My jeweler told me, while I was pregnant and my fingers swelled, that it was better for the integrity of the ring not to resize it every time my fingers changed size; and 2.) since you mention that you are pregnant, is your ring finger swelling and creating additional pressure on the ring/setting, which might be contributing to the prongs loosening?

You can also consider getting 6 prongs for your setting instead of the typical 4. This will help hold it in better. You might not like the look as much, but it is a cheap solution while you and your husband decide whether to replace the entire band or setting.

If it was me, I'd be too nervous to wear my ring until the setting was replaced. Good luck!

I have worn my rings for almost 30 years and never had a problem. I take them in about once every 5 years to be checked.. I wear them every day. I do take them off when I wash dishes since, I am sensitive to soaps and need my hands to be completely rinsed and dried..

My mother has a beautiful ring she has now owned almost 50 years. It was custom made for her with 7 diamonds. She said only once has she had to have a prong tightened..

Maybe you should consider taking it to another jeweler to have repaired..

Are you taking them to the same place each time to have them fixed? My diamonds have never felt loose, but I did notice that one of the prongs kept snagging on things. When I took it in, they said they needed to tighten and adjust all the prongs so that my diamond would not get loose. And I could definitely tell a difference when I got it back. But mine have never felt loose at all, and I've had these rings on my finger for 14 years. I would take it to a mom & pop shop and have them look at it. They may even need to add extra prongs, or replace yours. Your diamonds should not be falling out. I hope you find someone who can fix that for you. Good luck!

I thought it was part of maintenance to have them professionally cleaned and have all the little "prongs" (the tiny pieces that hold the diamonds) checked periodically in order to keep that from happening.

I've never had it happen, but one of the prongs on mine constantly got caught on the changing table pad (I've since stopped wearing it during the day doing ANY household chores, including changing the baby!) and one of the prongs was pulled. I took it to Jared (where we had it done) and they fixed it under the warranty. I didn't get a lecture about being too h*** o* my rings, just a reminder that it's a good idea to bring it in sometimes for a check!

No, diamonds don't just fall out. Take your rings to a qualified jeweler. They can add prongs to your wedding ring. I had only a 4 prong setting and the jeweler added a prong to make it a 5 prong setting. This was a precaution just incase a prong was pulled away or broken. If you have 4 prongs and a prong pulls away, the setting will fall out. A 5 prong still gives you 4 prongs to hold in the stone. I would also insure your rings if you have not done so. You should not have to be nervous to wear your rings because stones keep falling out. Good luck!!

I have had this issue since I got my engagement ring reset into a higher setting. The prongs will catch on everything and I am constantly taking it in to get tightened.

i lost my diamond about a year ago and just realized that I am not a woman who can keep jewelry. I have nothing to show for all the pieces I have purchased over the years. Lost, stolen, broken.... My suggestion to you would be to schedule the ring on your homeowners or renters policy. This way if you lose a stone, you can have it replaced.

It's just part of my routine to check to see that the diamond in my ring is not loose before I wear it. And they really shouldn't be lecturing you on being h*** o* your rings. Go to a different repair place or if you do go back to them tell them that, "No, I'm not h*** o* the rings, you are just incompetent." and then go elsewhere. (sorry my snippy side is showing :) Anyway, I peeked and saw you were from Spring, if you are ever in Austin there is a repair shop in Barton Creek Mall who resized my ring and evaluated the prongs to see if the tips holding the diamond in were still good. He said I probably would eventually want to get it retipped because of wear, but could wait a year. Did this while I waited. They were inexpensive. I'd go back...I couldn't even tell that the width of the band had changed and he'd adjusted it 2 sizes up. It was a Fast Fix Repair and I saw it was a chain so they might have one near you...though I don't know if the quality is consistent between stores; I've only gone to the one.

I'd go to a reputable jeweler and ask the name of a jewelry repair shop that they trust. That's how we found the shop I described above.

I had the prongs lengthened over my solitair..and I have them checked once a year---any jeweler will look at them for you. I had one of my diamonds fall out of my eternity band, but those sit in the ring and its harder to have the prongs lengthened on a small diamond.

Do you wear your wedding set all the time? IF you do that is the problem. I never wear mine in less I am going to church or out to dinner with my husband. When I am doing things around the house, it is so easy to catch the prongs on clothing items, or just knocking them against hard things. The more that happens, most likely is causing the problems of you losing the diamonds out of your rings. When in doubt, just don't wear them around the house. No one sees them except you. Show them off when you are out with your hubby on the town.

yes my diamond was loose. i could hear it raddeling when i was fixing my hair one day!!! we took it back to the jewerler and he put a little extra metal at the top of the prongs to hold it better. it was made by him as far as i know he didnt make any others like it. the prongs are a bit different and look more like flower petals than the regular prong. but yes it does happen. a friend also completley lost hers in her wedding ring. i would ask them to reset them and fix the problem. i dont wear mine unless i am going out. i am always hitting it, scratching me or my son with it so to protect it its rarely worn.

I didn't read all of the responses, so you may have already been told this. I had the same problem with my engagement ring with the original platinum setting - platinum is very soft. I could actually bend the prongs with my fingernails! The solution was to put a more heavy duty prong setting on the ring. The original setting was small to showcase the diamond, but I'd rather have the setting stand out a little more and not have a chance of losing my diamond. Since replacing the setting I haven't had any problems at all.

I disagree with your husband, not everyone has this problem. I've had my engagement rings (wrap and solitare) for 11 years. We bought ours from Kays and also bought the insurance which guarantees the rings as long as I have them inspected every 6 mos. Because of this I have had them repronged once, but I've never lost a diamond.

I'd be curious as to what exactly they are doing to "fix" the problem since it obviously isn't working.

You may want to take them elsewhere, but it may cost you more. In the long run it may be better for your piece of mind!

You need to go ahead and take your rings to a different place. Ask for them to check the prongs on your rings. Do this at least once a year. I never take my rings off. I have had to take my ring in once because I bent the prong. Bytheway if your ring is snagging anything that means the prong is loose. It should never do that. If this keeps happening ask for a stronger prong setting. I know I am h*** o* mine. If your husband is blaming it on you then take your rings off to do dishes, yard work, laundry and just wear them when you go out of the house. Maybe you are h*** o* them--even still-this should not happen. If this happens to a lot of people that your husband knows maybe they are getting their jewlery at the same store. Never know--but love your rings and take care of them.

I have a pretty good sized solitaire that sits up high. Over the past 13 years, I have banged this ring beyond typical. In fact I'm currently only wearing my band because the solitaire gets in the way, but I have NEVER had a problem with my ring. I would suggest you take it to a different jeweler... maybe the setting needs work, and/or is defective. I would be crazy if I looked down and saw a diamond missing... good luck to you. :)

I have neve lost a diamond and I rarely take my ring off.

I have never had this problem with my ring, but it has a half bezel setting (not prongs). This did happen to my mother many many years ago. She was not able to find the diamond and ended up wearing an anniversary ring for many years until she got a replacement. If Diamond Cutters is less than willing to truly fix your rings so this doesn't happen again, I would DEFINITELY have it insured. To have all my jewelry insured plus some of my husband's valuables only costs about $50 every 6 months. Absolutely worth it!

I've only had problems with my tennis bracelet. It looks like it is almost in the same spot, twice I have had a diamond fall out. The first time it looked to be where the setting was on the side of my wrist, and maybe I hit it on the edge of my desk and knocked it loose. The 2nd time I had taken the bracelet into Zales (where it came from) and one fell out while they were cleaning it. My husband has bought all but my wedding set from Zales, they have a lost diamond policy. As long as you bring it in every 6 months for inspection and cleaning, they will replace any lost diamond.

I wouldn't think this is normal. It they are saying you are being too h*** o* the jewelery, you should have them use stronger metal for the prongs so it holds better. The higher the caret of gold, the more pure it is, and hence softer.

I would take it to an independent jeweler with a good rep and have them reprong it. They shouldn't be falling out like that.

I've been wearing my rings for nine years and have never had this problem. I am pretty h*** o* my rings - something my husband gets after me about. I've finally started taking them off for exercise, yard work, etc. I have also never heard my sisters or mother complain of this problem. Anyway, I'd take your rings to another jeweler and see what they think.

I've been wearing my ring for over 6 years and it's never lost a stone. I am pretty h*** o* my ring and tend to bump it into things quite a bit. I've even had it snag on clothing before and nothing has ever happened to it.

FYI - for the post below that says Platinum is soft so she's going to go with a White Gold ring is totally false. Platinum is a stronger metal than gold and not softer. Platinum is easier to engrave but would not allow a diamond to fall out because of the softness of the metal.

It could depend on your setting. Some settings are better at holding stones in than others. I think you should take it to another jeweler for their opinion. The stones may not have been mounted properly or are placed in a setting that does not hold the stones well. This definitely is NOT normal for stones to fall out.

Also if you haven't already, get insruance on your ring. Save the paperwork for the certification of the diamonds so if something does happen and you lose the stones that are insured, the insurance company will pay for the value of the actual stones.

I have had my wedding and engagement rings for over 10 years and have never had one fall out. Take your ring to a reputable jeweler such as Tiffany's.

I'v never had a diamond fall out of my rings over these past 10 years. My husband got my wrap at Samuels Diamonds here in Austin. I'm not sure where he got the solitare. Sounds like a crappy ring holder altogether if you have already had them fall out 3 times... maybe look into getting them reset at a different place? shouldn't cost too much seeing how you already have the diamonds.

Hi Kristen, I have had the most problem with my marquise cut stones. They are 4 small sapphires surrounding 2 small diamonds. I have had them replaced, retipped, yet every few times I wear this ring, one of the sapphires has been lost. I have other gemstones in other cuts and never lost one. Perhaps it is the cut that makes it more vulnerable. I was not rough, didn't garden wearing that ring. Every ten years or so I have my wedding ring setting retipped so that the solitaire does not get lost. HTH.

Take them somewhere else and have them and the setting evaluated. I have my mom's wedding ring and she wore it 33 yrs and I have worn it 24 yrs and nothing has ever fallen out of it.
I do have locking backs on my diamond earrings just so they will not fall out of my ears. But those diamonds have never fallen out either and they are 25 yrs. old.
So no it is not normal.

You should take them to a small shop with a real jeweler to check. It sounds like the setting isn't made right. I have been wearing my set for 9 years, and have never had a problem. I have 6 prongs to hold in the diamond. I lay tile, paint, do landscaping, etc. and it has never fallen out,so I don't think it's you. It soulds like the prongs aren't made tough enough. Here in Kerrville, we have a very good jeweler named Jim Morris. He made our set and did a great job and at a very reasonable price. At the large, heavily advertised stores, like Kays, etc. you get low quality and high prices. They mainly get their customers because they carry the loans. With Jim, you can melt down gold from other jewelery and have it custom designed for you at a fair price. You can even provide your own diamonds. We shopped pawn shops for the diamond. Sometimes, you can find a good deal that way.

The first engagement ring my husband bought for me lost diamonds twice before we even got married. Fortunately they replaced them- but finally we just returned the ring and got another one. The design wasn't working. Instead we got channel set rings -no prongs to pop loose- and they worked very well for me- until I had babies. Channel set diamonds can be resized once- but after that they pretty much need to remake the rings. So my original wedding/engagement rings are in the safe waiting to be passed down to one of my girls and now I wear an anniversary band only- also no prongs but not quite a channel set. But I also have the insurance on it that requires me to take the rings to the jeweler twice a year to have it checked. And almost every time there is something loose! I am VERY h*** o* jewelry. I wanted rings that could be worn ALL the time and the channel setting allowed that- I worked in the garden with those rings on, housework, everything. But resizing can be an issue. Sounds to me the design that they came up with may be pretty and special- but also non functional. Get extra prongs added or have them remake them entirely. You should NOT have to think about those rings on a daily basis. If the "diamond is forever" it stands to reason that the setting that holds it should be also. If Diamond Cutters won't make it right- find someone that will- and then get on MamaSource and let EVERYONE know that their service was not up to par. I've had my ring for 37 years. Misplaced the diamond on
one occassion, and by the grace of God, he led me straight
to it. I will spare you that story that can only be
explained by "a miracle". I, since, have had my settings
checked for stability on 2 occassions. I would make
it a point to mark your calendar every year (maybe your
anniversary) to have it checked,
making sure you get the same diamonds back that you
