Hi, I have 27 mo old twins g/g. One of them has been sick since last tuesday, going on 6 days. With fever spiking over 104.2 I have had her tested all over the board, she had to be cathed on Friday, they took blood and did xrays of her organs and chest. I received the results today - stating their was nothing wrong with her. The doctor started antibiotics on friday after all her tests and she's still not eating, or going to the bathroom. Her fever is down today it is only 99.8, but I can't shake the feeling something is seriously wrong.
If any of you have had this happen with your own children, can you please put me at ease or at least give me some suggestions? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

So last night she finally ate...granted it was only macaroni and cheese and corn (her favorites) but she ate none the less. She had 2 helpings and some yogurt. I definetly feel she is on the mend and aI really appreciate all of your comments. She did go pee pee last night - we were so excited!! I tested her skin for dehydration, by pinching the skin on the top of her hand, and she was not dehydrated. YEA! So I believe she is getting better. Again thank you all so much, it's really nice to have this website to help get answers for serious worry-wart parents like me! :) If anything changes I will be sure to let you all know. Thanks, Mother of Three

Yes my boys have been fighting a nasty fever filled virus for almost a month now and finally we're all on Antibiotics.

The only thing I could do was keep pushing the fluids. Popcicles, icy drinks, anything sweet in liquid form. She needs the liquid above any other nutrition you can give her right now. Look for protien water, and such if you must get other nutrients in her.

Is your daughter throwing up or having loose bowel movements? My 3 year old just recently got over a nasty virus. I took her to the doctor and all they told me was that she had a virus and it would pass. She was sick for 8 days and lost a lot of weight. I have read in the the paper that their is an abdominal illness that is going around and is being linked to daycares. It has been traced to lack of handwashing after using the bathroom or when changing dirty diapers and is contagious. My mother ended up getting the same thing from my daughter and had it for over a week as well. Hopefully she will begin to feel better soon if this is the case. One more thing...if she is not urinating that is a sign of dehydration. She may need to get IV fluids. I would take her to the ER.

Hi C., I am a nurse and if your daughter is not urinating there is something wrong with her. Make her drink water and if she doesn't pee then you need to take her to the hospital., That is not normal. We have to urinate to remove toxins from our body.

Trust your instincts. If you feel she is sick, get another opinion. If you have a children's hospital near by, that might be your best bet. It would be a quick way to get a second opinion. Worst case is that you feel silly for overreacting!

Hello~ My daughter at 24 months was running a high fever &
not eating or urinating & she had a urinary tract infection
so you may want to have her urine tested~ Luckily 1 time she
said it hurts mommy as she was peeing in her diaper so I mentioned that to the pediatrician otherwise they didn't think anything was wrong with her either based on the blood work but when they tested her urine it was a UTI I guess when they are potty training it can be common to get a UTI It took 10 days of antibiotics to clear up & she really didn't act better until 7 days of the antibiotics!! Good luck~ I hope this helps* A.
I hope this helps :) A.

I would take her back to the doctor or the ER. It sounds like she's dehydrated. My 22 month old was very sick a few weeks ago. She ran a fever, wasn't eating or drinking and would get sick to her stomach off and on. Oh plus had diahrra. They ended up sending us to the hospital to give her some fluids. She was sick for a week straight as well. The doctor at the ER seemed to think she had the Rodo Virus which is going around really bad right now in younger child.

But I would definately have her checked for dehyrdation.

Hope your little one gets to feeling better soon.

My daughter just recently had the same exact thing happen. They had to do a spinal tap to make sure it wasnt spinal menengitus. Turns out she had a HORRIFIC UTI that was in her kidneys. She was hospitalized for a week. MAKE SURE THEY DO ALL THEY CAN. This is VERY dangerous for a little one..especially on their organs.. TAKE HER BACK TO THE DR ASAP

Is your daughter hospitalized right now? I really hope she is. She needs IV fluids. Mom's have instincts....and if you are not feeling comfortable with her doctor's decisions......you NEED to get a second opinion, right away. I really hope by the time you read this, your daughter is feelng all better......but if not.........please make enough noise to be heard. And, please let us know what happens with her.

Has she been drinking at all? Was the Doc concerned about dehydration? It's possible that she is using all her resources to get well so there's not much to pass. But you really ought to contact the Doc about dehydration, they'll ask some questions and tell you whether or not to bring her in. I hope she's just feeling too sick to eat or drink much . Please let us know.

Have you called the doctor today? How long has it been since she ate, drank, or urinated? When was her last BM? I would really consider the emergency room. Please call your doctor as soon as possible. Even if she is getting over an illness it sounds like she is dehydrated which is reason for a trip to the ER for IV treatment. Good luck.

I'm really not sure how to help you but I did want to offer this to you. I was reading American Baby last week, a pedeatrician had written in regarding fevers, she basically said fevers were way over rated unless you were dealing with an infant. She aslo said that fevers occur when the body is trying to fight off an infection. Sorry I don't have more to add, keep us posted.

My son did this for years...every year about this time we would end up in the emergency room worried to death b/c he had a 104 degree fever and no one could find anything wrong with him. However, when he was about 4 years old, I met my husband (who was a Medic in the military at the time) who offered to come with us to the doctor and when the DR could find nothing wrong, my husband suggested getting him on some allergy medication. They put him on Claritain and from that moment on we have never had the problem. Talk to your Ped. and suggest the allergy meds. I know how scary this can be and I know I was willing to try anything after 4 years.

Ok I know from personal experience that you need to have the urinary track checked. She may need a stint place to help her pee. To me it sounds exactly like what I went through as a child. The urinary tube gets blocked and then u get fever. The antibotics may not help at all. A urilogist maight be your best bet. Try taking her to a different hospital for a second opinion. I hope that this helps in pointing you to the right path. I hope that she feels better cause I to am a mother of twins g/b so I can understand.

Well, I can;t imagine what might be wrong, but with a fever like that make certain that she is getting enough to drink. You can give her popsicles and ice to suck on if she;s not drinking well otherwise, but make sure she gets her fluids.

When my youngest daughter was 14 months old she went through a similar thing. She kept running a fever, was lethargic, wouldn't eat, etc. I took her to the hospital twice and they kept telling me she just had a virus. On Thanksgiving day she looked like she was half dead so I took her again. By this time she was so dehydrated it took seven tries to get the IV in her because her veins kept blowing. Turns out she had a UTI and Kidney infection and ended up being hospitalized for four days. If she's not drinking or using the bathroom she is definetly dehydrated. Demand the doctors do something for her so she doesn't end up like my daughter did!

just checked in this page because my 4 year old seemed to have recovered from a fever but refused to pee for almost 17 hours. So I took the advice read from this forum and threaten to take him to the hospital, which finally triggered the pee switch. He obviously has been holding in for a long time (didn't know you can stay that long without going to the bathroom). I was worried sick.

I am so sorry you are going through this Hon...it is so scary when your baby is sick, but if she was in the hospital and thoroughly checked and put on antibiotics and her fever dropped back almost to normal, I would say she is on the mend. Are you giving her Pedialite or something similar to hydrate her? Food may not taste good to her or she may have no appetite from being sick. Keep trying soft foods in very small amounts and push liquids, especially water even if only by teaspoonfuls. Was it a virus she had? Did she cough alot? Sometimes that makes their tummy and throat hurt. If she was vomitiing she may have a bad taste in her mouth. If so brush her teeth and tongue. Hope this helps and I hope she is all better real soon! :)

If you rotate Tylenolol and Motrin every 4 hours, then that should hopefully make her feel a little better; if even to take fluids. Food is not a necessary, but water is. I have found that Pedialyte taste horrible and most children that I know will not drink it. You need something to stablize the electrolyte imbalance. I would suggest her favorite kind of Gatorade. That is great just for that purpose. Really whatever type of liquids you can get her to drink would be good. Water, Kool-Aide, Apple Juice, Gatorade etc...

A fever is a bodies way of fighting a virus or bacterial infection. A fever in it's self is not necceasarliy a bad thing. That is her immune system kicking in; and that is a good thing!

If your daughter is not urinating at all, then she HAS to go to the hospital. More than likely, she is dehydrated and in need of fluids. Encourage her to drink or you will have to take her to the hospital.

I have a daughter who has had a multitude of problems; urination being one of many. I have had to tell her at times that if she doesn't drink then I would have to take her to the doctor and they would have to put the needle in her arm to make her better. Believe it or not, it really encouraged her to drink. Do whatever you have to. As long as she is urinating a little, it's better than nothing, because that means her Kidneys are functioning!

Call your doctor! Ask Ask Ask Ask Ask... until you get and answer. Doctors are notorious for beating around the bush!

Hope that helps!

Take Care and Good Luck!

Hope that your little girl is feeling better now. But go with your gut feelings...while her fever reduction is a good sign, the fact that she is not urinating is a serious concern. She may be on the mend from the antibiotics but still need IV fluid rehydration if she is refusing oral fluids. Call your doctor and let her know that your daughter is not urinating. An ER visit for IV hydration may be required. In the meantime, if she is able to tolerate it give her sips of fluids (water, pedialyte) but not soda, every 10 minutes.
