Ok, my hubby and I have been trying for a month to get preggers. Well I am a week late and so I bought a 3 pack of tests at walmart. I took one last night.....positive but the line was faint. So this morning I took the other two...same result. I went to get a blood test today and they said it was negative. So I got mad, cried and went and bought another test different brand and all.. I just took it.....positive with a faint line. Can anyone explain this? There is no way I can get 4 false positives! And I thought blood tests are supposed to pick up the hormone quicker than urine! Someone help!!!!!

What can I do next?

Hi S.. My advice is to be patient...how hard is that! :) Just kidding. When I was preg the 4th time, I went to local Health Dept. and was told I wasn't preg. I knew better....this was my 4th. I just knew! I waited 1 week, and lo and behold I was preg. There are sometimes wrong readings in lab tests. If you are only 1 week late, give it another week or better yet, give it 2 more weeks...and see what you get. I really do know it is hard to be patient in this situation...DH and I tried for 2 years to conceive #2...then proceeded to have 4 more (total 6) one after the other. CONGRATS!

I have been pregnant 4 times and it has been my experience that if you see even the slightest bit of a "positive" line then you are pregnant. I would also suggest giving it a week or two and trying again. GOOD LUCK!!!

Hey the best thing I can tell you is that you should wait a week or two and take another home test to see if the faint line gets darker. I have gone thru 5 pregnancies and have 2 boys in the end but ALL of mine were determined by home tests. It could just be that your levels are not high enough yet to pick up on a blood test especially since you are only a week late. Just give it some time and try not to let it consume all of your time.
Good Luck hope all turns out well for you.

Hi S.. When the results are really positive the line is not faint. It should look the same as the control like. This isn't like being "a little pregnant" it is on or off. Sorry for the upheaval this must have created. I've been there. Hang on and be patient. It took 4 months with my son and 6 with my daughter, and that was not long compared to my friends.

Jill this happened to me with my first pregnancy. I yelled at the doctor and nurses. It turned out that I had been pregnant but miscarried. It's quite possible that you were pregnant for a few days and the stick tests are picking up the hormones that are left over from that pregnancy. The blood test is always the most accurate.

If it makes you feel some better, I conceived again the very next month and didn't know it. I called my OB/GYN and said, "I had an early miscarriage about 6 weeks ago, should I have my period by now?" The nurse told me to go get a test and it was very positive. My daughter is now 6 1/2.

While you will feel extremely disappointed keep remembering that you were able to conceive and that's half the battle for most moms!

This happened to me with my second child - My mom and dad had come down for my birthday - mom brings in cake and I about died. Mom says are you pregnant - since we were trying then. I took the home test the line was very, very faint but there. I went in for the blood test and it was negative. They re-took the blood work about 2 weeks later and sure enough I was pregnant.

My experience with pregnancy tests (and I have had 8 pregnancies) is that are a positive if there is any line at all. I have had doctors tests tell me that they are "inconclusive" before and "negative" before and I have 2 kids with birthdays to celebrate soon from these. However, I had a pregnancy that started out with very faint lines on the tests that I took, turned up positive at the doctors office FINALLY, but that resulted in a miscarriage at 11 weeks. It was very sad since it was a very much wanted baby. I would go with the positive result but look for the other symptoms too - the total exhaustion, breast tenderness and enlargement and of course the yucky sick feeling you get in the morning. Wait another week and take another test and see. If the line gets darker, bring it to the doctors appt and show them. I laugh remembering the 7 positive tests (all different brands) that I had and the negative ones the doctor had (both blood and urine) - my son turned 4 yesterday (he is #5 in the line-up)!

Treat it like a positive until you are proven wrong. Ie: you get your period.

Chances are the test they use at the drs. requires higher levels of that pregnancy hormone. Go back to the Dr. in two weeks.

Hi S.,

With both of my pregnancies the first test I took the line on the pregnancy test was faint. I waited a few more days to a week and tried it again. The line was definitly there. You may want to wait a week and try again. You may also want to get the new version (digital) pregnancy tests that say either pregnant or not pregnant (they work great). This way your not trying to see if a line is there or not. Blood tests are suppose to be more accurate---???? so I don't know what to say about that except I would give it a little more time and test again.....
Hope this helps (a little). I hope you get the positive you are looking for.

S., when I got pregnant and took the pregnancy tests they also had faint lines. All three of them! I went to the doctor, but they didn't do a blood test just a urine test. Did you see your OB when they did a blood test? Maybe the hormone hits the urine before the blood? Good luck.

I'd say since you're only a week late, to wait another week or so and then go for another blood test, maybe it's just too early.

I would say to trust your doctor's blood test over the home pregnancy tests. The hormones that you are looking for are going to hit the blood stream before they get into the urine (they have to be filtered out of the blood as a waste product). Depending on how light the positive strip is, it may just be that as the urine is passing over it, it makes it slightly darker but no true positive response. I would wait another week and take another one. If it comes out darker, then go ahead and get another blood test from your doc. The home pregnancy tests were actually late for me. They didn't detect anything around the time I was supposed to have my period. Then I had implantation bleeding, which I thought was my period. Finally about 1.5-2 weeks after I should have started my period I wasn't feeling right and took another pregnancy test. So the home ones aren't all that accurate. The blood test is the best way to go.

Congrats! You are most likely pregnant. I had a similar experience with my 2nd child. It was just too early for the blood work. My husband was releived when it came back negative, but three weeks went by and I went back to the doctors and I was pregnant. They said sometimes the hormone levels are just really low and the blood doesn't get the concentrated amount that the urine does.

S.- when I got pregnant with twins, the line was very faint at first. My doc said that on a urine test, positive is positive, even if the line is faint. Maybe have another blood test. There are two types. One tests for HCG and the other tests the level in your blood. Maybe your doc could order that test instead. It can even tell how many weeks you are based on the level in your blood.
Good luck!

I will tell you that I had gotten my period and it stopped. It was light and since my husband and I had been trying to get pregnant, I decided to take a test. It came out positive, but it was a very faint line. I was a little concerned since my first child I just did not get my period at all. A month later, when my period would have been due I got my period. I was devasted since I thought I was pregnant. I think that I had a pregnancy that was not viable so I had a miscarriage. We did get pregnant a couple months later (we skipped trying for a couple of months) and had a beautiful healthy full term baby! So take care of your body, pay attention to what it is telling you, but please remember that if you are pregnant and do have a miscarriage, it is because the baby was not healthy. I know it is easier said then done and you are probably very emotional, but your time will come! Keep your head up!

Get the book "Taking Charge of Your Fertility". Start charting your fertility signs. If you do it all right you won't need a pregnancy test because you'll see it in your charts. Most of all, realize that it may take a few months to actually get pregnant.

You can get false negative results but it is very rare to get a false positive. Maybe your hormone levels are too low for a blood test to register accurately yet. Wait a week or so. Hormone levels increase rather quickly and that should provide a level that they can detect. (BTW - I have a close friend that never got a positive blood result - I'm not sure why but it took an ultrasound to confirm her pregnancy) Just remember, every body is different!

Hi S., My name is Steph also!
While I am not expert on home pregnancy tests, I have worked with women on concieving a baby and specialize in the emotional and mental aspects keeping us from achieving our goal. My invitation is to grab a piece of paper and do a writing exercise. You require a pen and paper
First at the top of your paper, title it Pregnant. List all of you thoughts, words, emotions, feelings, ideas that come up regarding being pregnant.

For example.
Pregnant
-hard
-ill be fat
- not good enough
- long
- frustrating...

Get them all out. Next Re-write each of them

For example.

Pregnant
-hard Getting pregnant is easy for me
-ill be fat I am pregnant and beautiful
-not good enough I am more than good
-long My pregnancy is short and fulfilling
frustrating... I am satisfied and fulfilled with
me

Now that pregnant ='s each of those statements and it has been 1.5 years Imagine what is new and different for you? What do you feel, who's there, what are you wearing, what do you hear? What did you let go of and What did you let in?

A semi- recent Mom-To-Be had been trying to get pregnant for 2 years and no luck we did a session together and looked at her patterns, beliefs, and thoughts, and found out what the real problem was and Whalla 3 months later (to the date) I got a call and she was 3 months pregnant! Shes Due April 7th and I am so excited, greatful, and blessed!

I hope this will help you. The great thing is you can use it with anything in your life, husband, car, job, friends...

Enjoy Your Beautiful Evening

Although the blood test is the most accurate, and may be correct about your not being pregnant yet,I also had a similar experience with the home kits. It was "inconclusive". BUT, I KNEW I was pregnant...I just felt different, kinda wierd. And since it was my first baby, nobody really thought I knew what I was talking about. It took another 3 weeks for the test to show enough hormone to say that I was in fact pregnant...and she is now 17 years old! So, I would say this: how does your body feel??

Like someone else said, positives aren't faint, they're pretty in-your-face. BUT those test ads completely lie when they say they can detect pregnancy as soon as you miss your period. Research in the American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology found that only one in 18 tests were sensitive enough to detect pregnancy at 4 weeks! So if your period is usually pretty regular but still hasn't arrived more than a week after it was due, try testing again, and wait at least 48 hours after your most recent test. It could be that it's just too soon.

It sounds like you are pg. Faint line or not. But I would wait another week and test again. Dollar Tree sells pregnancy tests now but I think you have to ask for them. Save your money and use those they work just the same. Then if you want the one that says pregnant you can always go buy it later.

Some digits for thought....
Pregnancy tests measure HCG or the pregnacy hormone at different levels. I think 20 mcg of HCG is the most sensitive over the counter test but it's been a while since I've followed it and there may be a more sensitive one out there now. Some won't show up until you have 150 mcgs. Yours should say on the box somewhere how sensitive it is or google home pregnancy sensitivity and there are a number of sites that will list them for you. If you have a faint line it is likely picking up some level of HCG. HCG levels should double every 36-48 hrs. so your line should be getting darker over time. If you took a qualitative blood test or a simple yes or no pregnancy stick like you have at home really, it generally measures around 50 mcg and may be negative while yours may be more sensitive and show positive. A quantitative blood test will tell you the level of HCG in your blood it must be greater than 6-9 mcg to be considered pregnant at all. Then it should double every 36-48 hrs, a falling HCG level indicates that the pregnacy may have been chemical or not implanted, this is very common even though it is heart breaking if you are trying. If your levels had started to rise your period would be late until your HCG levels got closer to zero ( it does not have to be zero for your period to begin though ) they generally decline at the same rate they increase then you may get a heavy to normal period. Most women don't even know it has happened and just figure they are late... It takes on average 8-12 months to concieve for the average healthy trying to concieve couple. Hope this helps. Best of Luck !!

Good news! You're pregnant! Depending on the type of blood test the doctor's office is using sometimes it doesn't pick it up... but any line on over the counter test is a positive result. Do you want to see a dark line? Get the CVS brand generic that works like the first response. (When I was pregant I had my blood test and they called and told me I had "a little bit of the hormone" in my blood, but every test I took was showing up positive. :) My son is turning 1 next week! :) ---- Oh, and qualitative blood tests are great, but a lot of OB's use quantitative which are only as good as over the counter, and like I mentioned in some cases not as good. The CVS brand was the only really good indicator for me!

If you were on hormones it is possible.

However, the faint line on my pregnancy test became a bright line 4 days later when I retested. However, if you wait too long to read some of them, they will read positive.

Any one test can be wrong from contamination or a screw up. Wait a few days and retest at home, but I don't think 4 tests are wrong.

The doctor said the reason that the blood test were coming out negative was because my body was putting out enough of the pregnancy hormone to give a positive result. My advice would be to see what your cycle is next month. Who knows, maybe something was wrong with the o be honest, I am a mother of 3 and now pregnant with my 4th, and have never seen a false positive pregnancy test. It could be a number of things, so keep trying as well. Just think, if you are preggers then it is not going to change. We lost a baby in labor at 38 weeks, and after that tried for 6 months to get our now 3 year old. It seemed like it was never going to happen for us. Finally after we quit trying (as advised by the Dr)poof, we were expecting, so just hang in there...

I am not an expert on this by any means, however when I was pregnant with my daughter...I got a FAINT line on my home pregancy test. I went and got one of those digital ones...it gives you a simple PREGNANT or NOT PREGNANT. Take that, and bring it in to your dr. If their test comes back negative again, push for an ultrasound! Its better to get the prenatal care instead of waiting around. I would also go to the drug store and buy some prenatal vitamins and start those..its good to be on those even if you are not pregnant.

Hey S.,
You could have some hormone imbalance issues. I have some problems in that arena and can register an at home positive pregnancy test even if I am in the middle of my period! It could also be the tests you are trying, we've been trying to conceive for about 3 years now and have definitely learned that some tests are more reliable than others. Sometimes your urine has a higher concentration of random hormones that can "confuse" an at home test, when in doubt, trust the blood test. Good luck!! Sorry you're having such a tough time....

You've only been trying for a month, keep trying. Stress can throw off your cycle, so try to relax (hard to do with a 3 year old). If you want to check up on your ovulation, go ahead and get the ovulation kit from the drugstore. Most fertility specialists will tell you not to be concerned unless you've been trying for a year or so with no result. And if you've been on the Pill, that can throw your hormones off for a little while, be patient.
