Ugh, it is the worst smell.

Wipe out the microwave really well. Remember the inside of the door, and the top of the inside of the microwave. Dry it off really well.

In a microwave proof bowl you can either use, lemon juice (1 lemon) and 1 cup water. Microwave 2 min and leave in there for 5 minutes.

Or Vinegar (1/2 cup) and water (1 cup). Micro 2 min. let sit 5 min.

Or baking soda (1/4 cup) and water (1 cup).Micro 2 min. let sit 5 min.

Then wipe down the microwave again with a clean sponge. Place a dry newspaper in the microwave and let the microwave dry out. Should take the smell away.

I laugh because, just a couple of months ago, my wonderful hubby did the very same thing!

We tried letting a bowl or plate of baking soda sit in the microwave overnight (seemed to help a little); we let onions sit in overnight; we tried heating up some lemon slices in the microwave; and giving the inside a scrubbing! At first, I didn't think we got the smell out but it did fade over time.

We still have the microwave! It doesn't smell any more unless I'm heating something for a long time and, even then, it's a faint (and nauseating!) smell. Good luck!

"Or do I just need to get a new one?"

No, Keep your sweet hubby... Those can be a bit difficult to replace. :-)

I suppose it depends on 1. how much it will cost to replace the microwave; 2. how long the smell lingers; 3. how crazy it makes you (or how many headaches the smell gives you) before you can't take it anymore and 4. how much a diamond charm necklace costs in comparison to buying a new microwave or keeping the burnt smelly one which drives you both crazy.

(Obviously, my husband is in charge of evaluating when we need new appliances... because if it was up to me, I'd be all sparkles and eating out! hahaha!)

i would try cleaning it with baking soda and vinegar, and then air it out for awhile. if that still doesn't work, try boiling a cup of water in there (the steam may help loosen any left-over smell)

K...........I agree with Karen; keep the husband...good ones are VERY hard to find. LOL

Looks like you got some great advice on the microwave....any of those should work for you, i.e., coffee beans or baking soda.

Take care.

Coffee beans, whole not ground. Let them sit in the microwave several hours or overnight. Coffee beans absorb smell.
