Bumpy Diaper Rash Part 2 - Circle Pines,MN

When I took my daughter to the doctor this morning, the doctor mentioned that as well as having yeast, my daughter may also be reacting to the type of diaper I'm using. The doctor wants me to try the cream first that she prescribed, and then we can look into changing diapers if my daughter's redness doesn't clear up once the yeast is gone. I have sensitive skin like my daughter and know that I can't use very many scented products without having a problem. I used Target brand diapers to start with when she was a newborn because they were unscented and a good bargain. I stopped using them when she starting getting rashes because I was worried that she developed rashes because they were pretty scratchy. I switched to Luvs to see if a slightly softer (but unfortunately scented) diaper would help. She's been using those for a month now and hadn't had a problem until she got the yeast infection about a week ago. To make a long story short, I'm just trying to find out if anyone knows of any unscented, soft diapers that aren't super expensive. I'm trying to avoid having to switch to cloth diapers if it can be prevented.

Edit: Since some people have asked, I wanted to add that my daughter is breastfed.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the advice! I've started using cloth diapers (I never thought I would, but you do what you have to for your little one!) and they have been so much better for her skin so far. I also have a stash of White Cloud diapers in case I need a disposable in a pinch.

My son has really sensitive skin too. I hope you find something that works! Right now I alternate between cloth and Huggies (normal Huggies, not the supreme ones). Also, the best diaper rash cream, which I alternate with his prescription stuff is Arbonne Herbal Diaper Rash Cream: http://www.arbonne.com/products/baby/diaperRash.asp
I think you can order it online otherwise, my mom sells it. It works wonders on my little guy. Good luck. Each baby is different so I hope you find something. It's so hard to see them in so much pain!

I had 2 little ones with very sensitive bottoms. Each responded better to a different diaper. My oldest did the best with Pampers Cruisers. My youngest did the best with the Walmart brand. Good Luck!

wow - lots of responses!
I've gone through 4 kids with very sensitive skin and the brand that has consistantly worked well is White Cloud which can be found at WalMart(the bonus - they are cheaper than other brands we've tried).

We have always used Pampers or Huggies. I tried to use Luvs with my son but they didn't seem to keep the moisture away like I thought they should. I love Huggies Gentle Care, a lot of times stores with have sales and you can get coupons for them. I go to babycheapskate.com and find great diaper deals sometimes I find a deal on that site and have a coupon and get the Huggies for less than the store brand. Plus we use the sensitive wipes, you could also use just a wash cloth and some warm water to clean her and let her air dry before you put the diaper back on. I think cloth diapers are a good ideal also, we looked into them and they really do seem like they would not be that hard to use. My only question is, if your daughter has sensitive skin what about the laundry soap and stuff you are using? We have actually found an all natural laundry soap that we love and I know that it is 100% safe for our family.

If you have a Costco near you, get the Kirland brand diapers. They are the best. Unscented, very absorbant and not too expensive. We are very very happy with them. No diaper rashes. Our daughters have very sensitive skin as well and we have had no problems.
Good luck!

Sorry you're having these troubles. Poor little woogie. I used Pampers Swaddlers when my baby was tiny and they were terrific. They're really soft and unscented. When my baby outgrew the swaddlers, I switched her to the Target diapers and by then her skin was better acclimated to our world. Desitin was the best thing we found for a diaper rash ointment. I'm expecting another little girl this December and plan to do the same diaper schedule with this one. I've also got quite sensitive skin and we with that curse just need to suck it up and get the correct products or our lives can be quite unpleasant. Good luck!

Your daughter may be sensitive to chemicals. Toxic chemicals can be found in diapers as well as all household products (cleaners, lotions, makeup, ect...). We have switched to all natural products in our home over the last year. We also use the Seventh Generation diapers. They have no cholorine (extremely toxic) in them! They are a bit more expensive. They can be ordered at 1-800diapers.com by the case full! Then you'll save a little money. You can also get free shipping on that site! Best of luck to her poor little rear end!

Hi E.-

My son gets yeast infections from diapers and wipes as well. I found that I can only use the kirkland diapers and wipes from Costco. Anytime you switch to a diferant diaper or wipe (even one time) the child will have a very good chance of getting a yeast infection. I have used the costco brand for a year now and we have had no problems with yeast infections from those diapers and wipes. Infact, we ran out of wipes the other day and I used a pampers uncented wipe and he got a yeast infection the next day. Good luck.

If you are looking for a new type of diaper, try white cloud from WalMart. I'm not sure if they are any better for sensitive skin, but they are only about $6 for a small package, so they are inexpensive. So if you try them and they don't work, you're not out a bunch of money. They are only available through walmart.

My second son seemed to get diaper rash easier than my first and we haven't had an issue since we ng to using tripple paste and using White Cloud diapers (we actually stumbled upon them when he was a newborn, because all the diapers that worked on my oldest leaked on him and these were the only ones that didn't...oddly enough).

Hello there, I too have a daughter who is now 15 mo. She seems to have sensitive skin as well. We tried Luvs and Huggies and she reacted to both of them. We use Walmart Parents Choice diapers and she does just fine with them. They are very cheap. I have noticed though with the size 4 they are kind of hard but I just work and bend them before I put them on. We've had the best luck with them and are affordable. Good luck on everything.

I would also talk to a nutritionist. If you have a yeast infection it is most likely due to diet and then the diaper situation is making it worse. Are you breastfeeding? If so, I would cut out sugars, yeast breads, and refined flours. Also make sure to get plenty of yogurt or other beneficial bacteria. talk to a nutritionist for more info.
i also second the motion of going cloth. It's really very simple and so much better for the environment! good luck

Babies R Us has a generic diaper that is a better quality than the Target brand, but much cheaper than the name brands-I don't think they are scented or rough--try a small pack and see---the weight range on them varies more also--they are longer up the torso, which also helps with leakage up the front and backside!

We bought Diapers a few years back now for our daughter that is somewhat sensitive to detergents, powders, and suntan lotion, she now says.

We used mostly Huggies Brand from Sam's Club since we had a membership. Probably the unscented type we used then. Would check WALMART for smaller quantities at a good price also. We thought LUVS too pricey and the regular Pampers brands basic compared to the HUGGIES type.
Only caution is when the child does get older, potty training does work better with cloth diapers as they get the result of not pottying in the proper place as a negative result while the Disposable Diapers lets them be still comfortable with a pretty full wet diaper. The result of the cloth diaper is often faster learning to use the potty. You can use with cloth diapers a diaper cover to keep the mess from getting other places also.
We used regularly a skin creme like Desitin to keep her happy.
It is adviced not to use regular Baby Powder as they should not breath it but cornstarch based powder is OK for young babies to try instead also.

Sincerely,
Steven and J.

My son was allergic to Pampers and Huggies (Huggies is made by Pampers), I believe due to the fact that they are scented (seems idiotic that they'd make scented diapers for babies since babies are known to have sensitive skin anyway). Luvs always worked for him, and we put my daughter on them when she developed her rash. The cream (maalox mix) has helped significantly, but we still use Luvs on her too because they're cheaper and she hasn't developed a reation to them.

Hey E.! CLoth diapers are really quite simple nowdays.... they don't take any work to use (the use snaps or velcro to put on! EASY!) and they wash simple, shake any poop off in the toilet, put them in a dry bag or hanging PUL bag, and toss it all in the washer come wash day, and then hang dry anything that is PUL and machine dry anything fleece, flannel, hemp, or terrycloth.

We use fuzzi bunz and happy heiny's, and some WAHM diapers I found on eBay fora great price. Also some prefolds and covers.

Another option if you don't want to go full cloth is to buy some fleece, and cut 20 or so pieces out in diapers shapes, and lay them in a disposable to protect her from teh chemicals and harshness of the disposable diaper.

ANY disposable is going to be harsh, they are made with 'fluff', broken down and laden with chemicals and dioxins. It doesn't matter the brand, the yare all made in the same general fashion.

I used Seventh Generation diapers until I switched to cloth and I loved them. I still use them for night and travel. They're chlorine-free and cost around $13 for a pack that lasted me about a week. I usually got them at a co-op or Whole Foods. I just recently found out you can get a bargain on them if you order them via 1800Diapers. I also use their wipes that are made without perfumes and would highly recommend those too.
Goodluck,

Hi E.,
I missed the first post, but am glad you found out what it was. Both my boys had really bad rashes (with huge bumps the size of medium mosquito bites) whenever I gave them juice -- especially apple juice. (It was the acid + sugar that did it.)

What I did was to dilute it 50-50 with water and the rashes either never appeared or were barely pink with no bumps. When they did get the rashes, I used Lotrimin AF (anti-fungal) and it cleared up within hours, depending on the severity.

I used the Especially For Baby brand diapers from Babies R Us...along with their unscented wipes.

Hope this helps...at least to possibly prevent it again. (It took a few rashes for me to figure out what the cause was.)

Hi~

I prefer the plan old Higgies. My daughter has super sensitive skin as well and when she was still in diapers I switched to Pampers because they were on sale at the time. She got an awful rash red and irritated. Keep in mind to watch for coupons and sales. I also recomend a wonderful lotion that I used once on Shyla's rash and it cleared it up. (Renew)it is not purchased in the stores it has to be bought through the company but it did wonders.

Just wondering why you are trying to avoid switching to cloth diapers. They are a true bargain and really not a lot of work. The only disposable dipes I was ever willing to have touch my son's skin were the all the 7th Generation ones I bought at the co-op (but they are not cheap). Sorry I can't help more than that.

I have always used Pampers Swaddlers on my newborns. There skin is so sensitive when they are new that it is worth the extra money. Plus they aren't scented. Target diapers are scratchy and don't keep your baby's skin dry when they potty. You could always switch back to target brand when your baby is older and is less sensitive. Good luck.

We buy the Kirkland diapers at Costco. I don't know if they are especially soft or not since they are the only ones we use. But, they are unscented and inexpensive. But, you need a Costco membership to shop there and they only sell them in large boxes, so you can't just buy a small pack to try them out. They also sell Huggies at Costco, I believe they are unscented. But, again you have to buy a large quantity to get the good price.

My daughter has sensistive skin and eczema and only time she got a rash or was irriated down there was when I diaper hopped. I found to just buy one brand of diapers and stick with it.

I preferred Pampers and never had any problems with the scent or anything. I also used Luv's occasionally.

But if I was to change to Huggies or another brand because of price she got a rash.

If your looking for a non scented cheap diaper go with Walmart's brand. White Cloud.

When we have her wearing Target diapers for too many days together, I think she starts to react too. I didn't like how Luvs fit. Seriously, the Pampers Swaddlers & Cruisers are the best. When I can't get them, I try for the Huggies Supreme or whatever. You could also try White Cloud - we tried them a while ago but since I found them at Wal-Mart, haven't tried them again. Oh and the Sevent Generation ones at Whole Foods. I know those would be unscented (and doesn't the khaki color go with everything?) though I'm not sure about the rest.

Also, while my daughter had her rash, we had her in cloth underwear and she was totally indicating when she was wet. So if you do go the cloth diaper route, maybe you can get her potty trained sooner too. Course maybe you could do that with diapers too - get more expensive ones now to help her bottom, then potty train early with cotton pants to save money.

The kirkland diapers at COSTCO ....

are the ONLY thing that work for us!!! We love them and they are so affordable and so super soft and I have never had a leak, I would say they are totally worth the membership in the long run. The 2 kinds of diapers you have used Target and Luvs gave my son the worst reactions so there is something in both of them that can be irritating! Good luck!

We've been lucky and haven't seen any evidence of sensitive skin with either of my kids (4 and almost 2). We've always used unscented wipes, since there didn't seem to be any point taking chances of irritating their skin with scented wipes. I haven't bought Luvs for a while but didn't even realize they were scented. Since my younger son was born, we've used the store brand diapers from Sam's Club. If you're not a member, it can be a pain to be told to join just for the diapers, I know. But we've had great luck with those diapers; they seem plenty soft and I don't notice any scent. Good luck; I hope the rash clears up and you don't have any more problems!
