Hi! My daughter is now 9 months old and I found out I was pregnant, again. I am still producing milk and slowly weening her.. she gets about half her milk from me and half from formula. I went to see my doctor and he told me to stop breastfeeding because it could lead to a miscarriage. I was shocked. I never that before. Does anyone have a similar story they can share with me and tell me what you did? thanks!

I became pregnant when my son was only 4 months old. My doctor wanted me to wean my son by the time that I was 12 weeks pregnant, because of the contractions. He seemed fine with me breastfeeding up until then. With my first son I had a problem with contractions and had to be put on bed rest. So, he might have told me to wean because of my history. I did wean him by 13 weeks, but he was ready. Good luck.
Hi. When my oldest daughter turned 12 months old, I became pregnant. I continued to breastfeed for the remainder of the pregnancy without a problem. Although I have to admit it became a bit uncomfortable towards the end w/ the huge belly and all, but never had any problem with the pregnancy itself. I had another perfectly healthy baby girl 9 months later. When my 2nd was 1 1/2, I became pregnant again and continued to breastfeed for the first 3 months and then ended up weaning her gradually just because it was right for all of us.
My doctors also suggested weaning but weren't too concerned as long as I was feeling well, no consistent cramping, etc. I looked up a lot of info online about breastfeeding during pregnancy and seems like its a lot more common than you think - always keeping in mind the health of the new baby...

It sounds like you need a doctor that supports Breast Feeding. Please call La Leche League and speak to them. They are a big help I breast feed my daughter longer then most and would call them if I had questions I also had doctors that were pro breast feeding and that makes a difference. The time to ween is up to you and whats right for you and your daughter.
I don't have a similar story, but I'd suggest switching doctors because your's doesn't seem to understand biology.
Many babies self wean (I've done a lot of reading, but so far no personal experience) but some go right through the pregnancy. Some women choose to continue to nurse their older child and their new born together. It's up to you what you want to do, but please don't be scared into forcing an early weaning if that's not what either you or your daughter want.

I have never heard that. I have heard that your supply might take a dive but that is not always the case. I know a handful of mothers who have nursed while pregnant and then have tandam nurse once the new baby was here.

Yes, this is very true. I had a similar situation.
It is said that women that breast feed genearlly lose weight quicker and return to their prepregnancy weight sooner than those that do not breast feed. Breast feeding burns alot of calories and shrinks the uterus back to its normal size. When you breastfeed, it actually causes the uterus to contract and therefore helps shrink it down to its original size before pregnancy. As you may know, when you are early pregnant, the fertilized egg attaches itself to the wall of the uterus until the placenta is formed. If the uterus contracts in response to breastfeeding, it could possibly detach the attached fertilized egg.
I think you should listen to your Dr. and stop breast feeding to be on the safe side. Good luck!!

Hi J.. I got pregnant when my daughter was 9 months. My doctor told me that I could keep nursing (I had a normal pregnancy with her). I ending up having a miscarriage at nine weeks. I don't know if nursing was the cause of the miscarriage. I've heard that nursing causes the uterus to contract. I hope this helps and congratulations!
It is better to speak with a lactation consultant. There is a risk of uterine contractions, but that risk is increased if you had complications during your first pregnancy, such as premature contractions and premature labor. They have to tell you that you can have a miscarriage for liability purposes and there is that increased risk, but mostly in those with risk factors. There is never a 100% guarantee.
yes! This is true. Remember how your uterus would cramp when you first began to breastfeed? Be careful.
