Back Pain - Kailua Kona, HI

Ever since I carried twins three years ago I have these episodes of severe pain radiating down from my lower back (about the top of my bottom) to both my legs. The doctors have said it is anything from the twins causing sciatic nerve damage to my weight (I am a bit overweight, but i only wear a L-XL and I'm 5"11"), flat feet, pinched nerve, blah, blah... Point is, all they ever do is give me pain medications, muscle relaxers, heat packs and tell me to wait it out. Massage doesn't seems to help (although it feels nice, it doesn't improve on the pain). It hurts like the dickens for a day, then sore for a day, then gone for weeks to months. Nothing in particular triggers it so I can't go preventative. Has anyone experinced this or have any suggestions for things I can try.

What can I do next?

only meds, and heat packs and massage, those seem like normal rememdies. there are herbal supplements for back pain i have not tried them yet, other than that i would suggest massage and that smelly pain relieving cream bengay, icy hot.

I have almost the same problem. I didn't have twins or anything like that, but the pain in back back is horrible. I developed the problem before I even got pregnant, like three years before. I went to the doctor first too, and they prescribed me all the muscle relaxers too. I ended up going to a chiropractor once or twice which lasted untill I got pregnant. Each subsequent child has made it worse that I even can't stand up when I get the pains, I collapse. I haven't been back to a chiropractor, but I should, since it seems to help.
I guess the point to that was maybe a chiropractor could help?

I was experiencing the same thing since I delivered my twins in May. So people say it was from the epidural. I am a bit overweight too & had high blood pressure and I would get that shooting pain the most if I tried to get up to fast if I was lying down or sitting down. But the weird part is that since I’ve been exercising more I haven’t felt it much.

I know this sounds strange, but have you watched how much salt you're eating? Sometimes eating too much salt causes an imbalance that irritates our muscles. Especially if you have previous muscle damage, it can trigger reoccurences. When it happens, try drinking a bit more water... sometimes with a bit of lemon is good too. See if that helps any.

K.,

I gave birth to twins with an emergency C-section when I was 29. I had bouts of pain in my lower back, shooting down my leg. I don't think that it was as bad as yours until I fell rather h*** o* my rump after slipping on a puddle. The pain was severe sometimes leaving me debilitated. After trying a chiropractor for about 6 months the pain only got worse. I had am MRI done and I learned that my L5 (lower back) had a bulge and a tear. What we finally agreed upon was traction, 3 times a week for I believe was an hour. This went on for a couple months and did wonders on my severe pain. I still have to deal with times of pain when I do things that put too much strain there. I also make sure that I drink plenty of fluids. Sometimes when I am dealing with pain there I have found that lying on my back, on the floor, with a cold pack at the spot, with my feet up on the couch, helps the pain. I was finally diagnosed with Degenerative Disc Disease which I believe was caused by or made worse by the epidural given to me when my second twin was born

Some of the triggers for me are: Vacuuming, pulling plates out of the cupboard and trying to reach for something above my head

Hope this helps,

Evelyn

I concur with the person who suggested seeing a chiropractor! I had horrible sciatic pain that ran down into my thighs and also pinched nerves that ran down in to my arm, as well as horrible carpal tunnel syndrom during my pregnancy that had gotten progressively worse after the birth of my son. I went to Drs. who had no idea what caused it and only gave me pain medication which made me extremely nauseous and left me throwing up violently. I finally saw a chiropractor when my son was just over a year old and within a few months, my symptoms were under control and occurring less frequently, and within a year, not so much a problem anymore. I still occassionally go to see my Chiro. for tune-ups when I move funny and get a pinched-nerve in my neck again, only in a blue-moon do I get sciatic pain anymore and my carpal tunnel is pretty much eliminated as long as I don't write for more than, say, an hour at a stretch. He uses spine manipulation and electrical stimulation on me and I swear he's a MAGICIAN! I have become a convert (I used to be highly skeptical of chiropractors!).

Sincerely,
S.

This is a long shot and i want you to know in no means here am i trying to sell you. Many years ago i was diganosed with a hernitied disc in my C6 and C7 area, which is my upper neck, which therefore means it will eventually effect my arms and hands. I was told that I needed back surgery to have the disc removed. I opted out, for years it would come and go like yours, 6 months good, 2 months bad and so on. In recent months I have noticed that at night, i lose feeling in my arms and hands and they start to tingle. This goes on every single night and it hurts like hell. This sounded to good to be true, but last week i was introduced to the Acai Berry. I started taking it 1 week ago, i have felt nothing in my arms, no numbnes or tingles or anything. Believe it or not also, i lost 5 pounds on it in 1 week. I swear by it, i do, it works, they call it the wonder berry and it is. Here is the website if you want to read about or just google Acai Berry. I get mine through Monavie.com. I became a costumer and a sponser. If you have any questions what so ever about this product, please send me a message or an email. I swear by it, i cant talk enough about it. Its amazing.
Good Luck, A.!

I had knee pain that had gotten so bad I could hardly walk. I went to an orthopedic specialist and after about $400 in dr. appt, physical theropy, and meds, he said there was "no cause for the pain." About 6 months later I had a bad back ache that wasn't going away with the percription meds my primary doc had given me. I finally went to a Chiropractor. Within 2 sessions he had diagnosed me with sciatica and began treatment accordingly. Within a month I felt better than I had in 2 years! It's now been about a year (11 months) and It's just now starting to flair up again. It is SO! worth looking into. If you find out what your HMO (if you have one) covers for Chiropractics and what your co-pay would be, many Chiro's will charge you the same even if their not part of your "Covered Network" of physicians. I was skeptical until my friend dragged me into her's. Now I'm a TOTAL believer and ADVOCATE to Chiropractic medicine!

Give it a shot, what more could you loose! ~J.

Hi K.,

I too had back pain that wouldn't go away after the birth of my daughter. I did the chiropractor thing, but after 3 sessions nothing was getting better. Then a friend sent me some Pain-a-Trate, to rub on it and T36-C5 oil to rub on the spasms. It worked so well! Since then, I have gotten involved with the company that makes it, Melaleuca, and taken the toxins out of my home which seems to help. I drink their tea and take their supplements which promote collagen structures in the back.

I would be happy to give you a sample of the pain-a-trate and send you more information ... you can also check out my website: hbmom.fourpointwellness.com for more information.
