Baby Not Measuring at 36 Weeks

I was just wondering if any one else has had this happen or knows anything about it. I went into my Dr. for a routine prenatal check up today and she was concerned about his size I am 36 weeks and I am measuring at 33 weeks. So she did a quick ultrasound and didn't see anything he is just a little low of fluid. So she is having me go in next Friday for a more detailed ultrasound and another appointment with her. I know that I will worry until next Friday so I thought it would help to see what other mom's have to say. I suppose I should have asked more questions while I was there but of course I didn't think of them until later.

What can I do next?

My daughter had this start to happen about 29 weeks - long story short - low fluids - bedrest - lots of water I drank - hospital for 2 1/2 weeks then born at 35 weeks. Healthy all is well

Since you are at 36 weeks I wouldn't worry too much about - low fluids are quite common during the end of pregnancy. 36 weeks is starting to get pretty good for delivery.

All is kind of scary - but drink lots of water - I think that helped a lot for my daughter. I drank lots of water and didn't have to pee so much so she was defiantly using it up.

I had that happen with my now 6yr old - everything turned out fine. The dr is just being cautious. It's good that you have a proactive ob. I was scared too, and everything turned out fine. He is actually my biggest child (in size for his age - everyone asks if he's 8!) !

Hello J., I didnt experience this with either of my two children but how come they are making you stress out for another week or so to do some tests? That would be agonizing even if it really is nothing (from what I can read from the other posts) but that would drive me nuts and thank God you are close to your due date. Good Luck and an early congrats!

If you're referring to them using a tape measure on your stomach then it really isn't that big of a deal. My doctor always said that it was really just an old wives tale sort of thing but that it was acurate most of the time so they do it just for fun. And sometimes you won't measure as high when your baby starts to drop.

Are these the ultrasound measurements? maybe you just have a small baby. was your little girl small? what about you and or your husband? remember all these measurements are just comparisons all babies and an average, guestimate. as for the fluids, keep drinking lots of water.

This happened to me as well. My entire pregnancy was easy and baby was growing and doing fine. I went in for my 39 week checkup, and the ultrasound tech estimated his weight at 5 lbs 9 ounces. My ob thought that I just had a small baby; but, after another ultrasound & more in depth checking, it turned out that he was not getting enough nutrients through the umbilical cord. My ob induced me the next day and my son was just fine.

Try not to worry too much. You are far enough along that the baby would be perfectly healthy if she were born today.

Measuring fundal height can be effected by a number of things. Some inoccuous, others more serious. It could indicate growth problems or low fluid but it could also just be caused by the baby dropping (although being a 2nd time mom, you likely wouldn't be dropping so early) or the baby's position (which is OFTEN the case).

I agree that drinking a lot of water is a great thing - whether there really is a concern about fluids or not. Another thing would be to avoid reclining positions and do more forward leaning positions (see www.spinningbabies.com). Posterior labors can be a lot longer and more painful - best to do what you can to avoid them!

If the baby is having growth issues or there is something else medically necessary to deliver the baby after your next Friday appt. you will be at 37 weeks which usually is not too early for lung maturation (although it is good to keep baby in there as close to your due date as possible).

Best of luck to you!!
