Area Rug with Dog Pee

Hi Ladies!
So, my mom has been living with me the past year. That is another story in itself. Anyway, she has her little dog that, despite what she claims, is NOT housebroken! I warned her that the guest room she would be occupying contained my favorite area rug, and to make sure her dog did not pee on it. She promised me the dog would not. (Hind-sight is 20/20 and I wished I'd removed the rug back then!)Well, we did some moving of furniture about two weeks ago, and I had to remove said area rug from her room. And low and behold, I found a huge pee spot right by where my mom lays out the darn dog's pee pads, the dog was going on my rug repeatedly! I have treated it twice with the Urine Off product, and I can still smell it. I can't keep trying to treat it in my home, becuase the last treatment soaked thru all the towells I put down under it, and caused some damage to my hardwoods!!!! (Another not-so-good story!). Does anyone know of a place/company, or if it's even possible, to SEND OUT an area rug for cleaning? I'm so beyond irritated with this dog, my kids play on the floor and this dog insists on pee-ing everywhere! I'm an avid animal lover, but this dog is TOO MUCH! But, can't ask her to get rid of it without destroying my relationship with my mom, who cannot afford to move out on her own yet..... HELP!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I guess I should have mentioned this, but I used to be a dog and exotic animal trainer. So I totally get where some posters are coming from with training, and I agree and I have TRIED to get my mom to properly handle her dog. The problem is that my mom treats the dog like a princess, so the dog then feels that she is dominant over my mom, step-dad, me, my hubbie, my kids and my 80 lb Shepherd! An Alpha dog cannot be trained w/o re-establishing the roles. I know this, but my mom will not stop treating the dog like a princess, however. I try and lay down rules, like no dogs on the couch, do not feed the dog from the table, etc. but my mom does it anyway. She feels bad becuase the dog was abused by prior owners, so she babies the darn thing. And it's a good thing the dog does not have any teeth left, becuase she has snapped at all of us, including my children...had that dog had teeth and bitten my children, it would be out the door, I don't care what my mom said! So, I can't "train" my mom to train her dog, so, yes fault lies with her.
I'll check into carpet cleaners that can maybe come out and treat the rug maybe in my driveway, I just can't have it done inside the house anymore and risk lots of water shooting thru the carpet and damaging my hardwoods any more then what has already been done. Thanks, ladies for you words of support!!! ;-)

Hello A.,

I don't have any suggestions for getting the pee out other then a professional that could come to your home.

I understand your anger about the dog pee, however PLEASE be angry at your mom NOT the dog - she taught the dog to go in the house - not outside. To ask a dog to go on a 2 foot square pad is BEYOND annoying to me. And anyone who teaches a dog to go inside and then expects them to go on a tiny pad is just asking for trouble. And chances are she didn't even "train" her dog to go on the pad properly - more, put the pad out and only corrected when she saw it, well, small dog pee is tough to spot first thing and so the dog never learns right from wrong.

Your irritation should be placed on your mom, not the dog. Your mom trained it to go in the house, so it did.

Positively annoyed by bad dog training.

Hello A. - I don't have much advice on the rug situation but what I can offer is it is possible to get a dog trainer. It's not the least expensive route, but trust me it pays off in the long run! What you get out of it will turn you, your family and your mother into better animal owners for life, and a brand new dog that everyone will be in awe of! Your life will be so much easier! Trust me, we adopted a dog from the pound around December and she was a complete mess due to us not being good owners, or knowing how to "properly" treat a dog and bring her into a "new pack" - the common reality of humans and 'mans best friend' is that we treat our animals like they are human, with that being sad, our dog developed all kinds of issues, seperation anxiety, started tearing things up, destroying the house, not listening etc. We had to learn to give her boundaries, limit her, and bring her back to being the last one in the "pack". Anyways, she is a completely different dog. Polite, respectful, obedient, she never has accidents.

She also has a kennel that she is in WHENEVER we leave the house, this is where she sleeps or goes when she is bad. The kennel was a big help, it created a sense of safety for her, dogs are naturally den animals and they LOVE this. It needs to be just big enough for the dog to stand up, turn around and lay down. Any bigger then that will allow her to have accidents in the cage. Dogs will not go to the bathroom where they sleep. The kennel should be in a place where your family spends most of its time. Its also a place she can go when she is bad (make sure when she is bad that you move the kennel to a place away from all human viewing this will be very effective as dogs are pack animals and being seperated from the pack (your family) is the ultimate punishment. You can even put it outside in a shady cool area. Remember you can not punish them for OLD accidents, only when it is freshly done, you will only confuse her. Also try to train her to go potty in a certain area, start by taking her on a leash. Keep her confined. This is not cruel, this is RETRAINING! In time she will get more freedom when she EARNS IT. You need to strip her away from all freedom. Being out of the kennel is one of them! Our dog was put in the kennel for the majority of the time for nearly a month - 2 months before she earned more freedom, but she had a really bad leader of the pack issue!

The trainer helped immensely! Although we paid a pretty penny, it was worth it. She taught us everything, reassured us and gave us peace. There is no such thing as a bad dog, if the dog has an accident its only a reflection of the owner. Teach your mom and your family to be better dog owners (though I know its not even not your dog!) and you will see HUGE results! Get some books on dog training or house breaking dogs if you dont want to get a trainer. Get the dog on a schedule. Take her out during certain times, feed her only what she needs morning and night (I recommend Timberwolf but that too is pricy and they have other alternatives) the better the food the less bowel movements they have and they dont stink or have smelly farts! Its amazing! A dog should NEVER be left unattended or wandering around on its own. They should always be on a command,.. That may sound harsh, but it takes dogs back to their roots, the real pack mentality. Talk to you Mom about this and tell her if shes going to keep the dog in the house then she needs to give it boundaries and that all of you are going to learn how to be better dog owners, now that there is a dog in the house. If she does not want to do this then you are going to have to ask her to give the dog away. Chances are if you do it with her she will be receptive. You will all learn a lot and benefit from it.

I have a GREAT trainer named Karen with Northwest K-9 Academy ###-###-#### HIGHLY recomended changed our lives! She would have books she could recomend as well. The best way to fix this problem is going to be by preventing it! You CAN teach an old dog new tricks!

Also one more addition - if you can please go to a locally owned pet store. The larger pet chains like PETCO and PETSMART do not carry the "GOOD STUFF" and specialty foods and such. Plus its always good to support the local businesses whenever we can!

I've not tried it for pee, but had great success with doggie throw-up using a product called Capture Carpet Cleaner that you can purchase at Home Depot or Lowe's. You mist the carpet in the soiled area, then rub a powder into it and let it dry. Once it's dry, you just vacuum up the powder. Good luck!

Ahhh A. -- I feel your pain. Dogs that pee have ruined more than a few relationships -- and I'm only counting ones I know about personally!!.
1. Do NOT put any area rug into a room with a questionable pet -- .
2. Now?? I'm sure you can have your area rug cleaned but first I'd call or go to a good, big pet store like Petco Or Petsmart--- and discuss the issue with them-- they might suggest a particular company to clean it- or a specific product to ask a company to use on it.
3. Discuss with your Mom whether she'd be willing to re-train her dog with a crate ( Crate training is FANTASTIC - and would seem a bit harsh the first week- but oddly - dogs LOVE their crates) IF she is willing--- talk to a good dog- trainer about how to go about crate-training an adult dog in order to '''' re train''''' the dog to refrain from peeing in the house ( you and I know it's not re-training- but there's no point in making your Mom acknowledge how wrong she was - she knows it -- almost certainly she does)

4. Back at the big pet store ( or a veterinary -) discuss what products they'd recomment to remove the smell and also to sanitize the areas where the dog is allowed.

5. Treat yourself to a lovely treat --- chocolate - a good book--a movie all by yourself--- hey-- or a date night with your returned 'guy' with a nice glass of wine-- Thank God he's back and safe.

Blessings on your for your generosity

A.!
I myself have pets and there are the occassional accidents. I bought a Bissell Little Green Cleaner (less than $100). It has done a wonderful job whether pet accidents or just something that has been spilt.
Tell hubby welcome home and THANK YOU!
