Yes, that was a bit sarcastic, but I've seem several posts where a mom is upset over the movie "Brave" and several moms responded, "It was rated 'PG!'"
So, seriously, are there any movies rated 'G' anymore? The new Madagascar and Ice Age movies are both rated 'PG.' It just seems like the 'G' rating is a thing of the past.

I posted the question, because I was a little tired of people picking on moms who let their kids see "Brave" and were surprised by the violence. Yes, we can look at these websites and learn more, but several moms said, "It was rated 'PG,' so you should have known not to take your kids. Sorry, but hardly any movies are rated 'G' anymore, so that's a pretty snarky response!
I agree and it is kinda sad. I mean I did let me kids see Brave but I'm not a huge fan of the violence. I didn't think there was a ton of it in Brave but Cars 2 was a bit much with all the talk of killing this and killing that and the crazy shooting scene at the beginning. It would be nice to have something a little "tamer" but I suppose that wouldn't sell as well!
I love all this craziness about how 'bad' movies are. I remember watching,as a young kid, goonies, a Christmas story, gremilins, ET, The neverending story, adventures in babysitting...and many more that by today's standards would be pg-13. I think ratings have become more strict.....and I personally think I grew up to be a fine human being even when my movies as kids were violent, crude, and had swear words!
I love CommonSenseMedia.com to look at the details of movies. They will tell you exactly what they mean by violence or sex, etc.
I honestly don't see how anyone can be surprised that xyz-undesirable-thing is in a movie when we have such easy information at our fingertips in 2012.
There are not a ton of G movies in theaters; they tend to be direct to DVD. Unless it is a very popular theme or big name like Dinsey/Pixar, they just don't make enough money to justify a theater release.

Upcoming G movies this year are "The Oogieloves in the Big Balloon Adventure" and "Finding Nemo 3D". Some preschool thing and a yet another re-release.
Im sure if the lion king and polar express were released now instead of years ago they would be pg (well maybe the polar express would be G) I dont go by ratings as to what my children see. If I am in doubt I watch it first and then knowing my children decide if they can handle it or not. As far as animation they can pretty much handle anything unless you know its for an older audience like adam sandlers 8 crazy nights.
No, too many mom's were complaining about each and every little thing so a "G" rating is impossible to do anymore because someone somewhere has complained and gotten that particular action or phrase marked as unacceptable for a movie.
Even the old old movies from Disney of years ago don't get "G" ratings anymore. Under the new guidelines some of them are even rated PG13 instead of plain "G" they once had.
I truly cannot imagine a movie that is not suitable for your kids. Honestly, most of the stuff that is put in that adults find funny and more of an adult nature goes over the kids heads and they just don't get it or even notice it.
The problem with "G" is that there is no longer a general agreeance on what is acceptable for all audiences. It is far easier to create the movie you want to create and allow people to educate themselves before seeing it. Honestly, I think it is laziness to not know what you are getting into before seeing a movie, esp if you have strict guidlines of what is and is not okay for your home/family. In addition, the moms who pointed out that it was a PG movie were in the right, be a parent and guide.
The only G movie I've seen advertised recently in theatres is Chimpanzee. We didn't see it.
My favorite G Movies - Lion King and Polar Express.
I have been unpleasantly surprised by some 'G' movies, while some 'PG' movies are better than I expected. I screen movies via www.kids-in-mind.com. It has a wonderful rating system to enable us, as parents, to make informed choices as to what our kids see. I took my kids to see "Wallace and Gromit: Curse of the Wererabbit," and was HORRIFIED! It was packed with sexual references and it was rated 'G'! Now I check out EVERY movie first!
I really didnt think it was violent... so I guess its all a matter of opinion. My daughter was way more scared of Lion King. I figured it was PG because they showed all those guys bare butts. I was disappointed that it wasnt a musical, since it was advertised as a Disney princess movie, I thought there would be singing.
Have you watched the old claymation version of clash of the titans? Its rated G and there are bare breasts and lots of killing. Now that was way too much.

To each his own as far as choosing and allowing one's children and grandchildren to see the movies they see, as we are the ones responsible for them and will have to deal with any aftermath. I allowed my then not quite 2.5 year old grandson to see "Deathly Hallows 2" last summer, he LOVES Harry Potter! He caught some of the underlying funny stuff in the movie that other theater goers didn't, and when he laughed when no one else did many soon followed, I think because they realized he "got" it. He had no problems after seeing it.
It's really just a matter of knowing your child(ren), not their age as much as what they personally can handle. Truthfully, I have more problems with what he hears from my 11 year old nephew who thinks the stupidest stuff (IMHO) is funny and cool :-/

I'm sorry you saw the "it's rated PG" response as "snarky."
I assume that most young moms today go by the ratings system which is why that's my standard response, but honestly it depends on the child. Some kids have a higher tolerance for the thrilling/exciting/scary things in life. My 13 year old can't even handle a kiddie roller coaster whereas her older sister wanted to do ALL the rides before she was even tall enough.
It's the same with movies and books, it's not a one size fits all, but at least the ratings and websites give you a good idea of what you're getting into before you go.
Oh and to answer your question, I think there are very few rated G movies because they would have to be SO lacking in anything even slightly offensive or scary they would probably appeal to no one (think Teletubbies.)
Right now? Not much. Chimpanzee is G. Finding Nemo is about to be re released in 3D - it's G.
Relatively recently, I can think of a few. The Secret World of Arriety (probably spelled wrong). Cars 2. Chipwrecked. Toy Story 3.

You cant use GENERAL anymore... There will ALWAYS be someone that bitches that something in the movie wasnt appropriate. Crazy world we live in, getting less and less free daily.
You know, we watch mostly nature documentaries, and with parental guidance... My son's all-time favorite 'movie' is Alone in the Wilderness... a documentary done years ago about a fellow who went out to live alone in Alaska, built his own log cabin, etc. He's five. I'm not looking forward to when he is hungry for more exciting stuff...
Commonsense media is great. And so is previewing. (I would pay out the money to go preview something, or wait until it came out on dvd and watch it first, but that's just me.)
